Maybe it wasn't even a ticket after all? I haven't been on an airplane since I was maybe three, but the thing Sun is holding, it looks too big to hold just her ticket. Once again, another screenshot:

In the case that it was a ticket, I don't think she ever went through with throwing it away. Probably stuffed it in her purse before she went back to Jin.

It is always worth really looking at the flash backs. The are like visual 'whispers' . Yes it is showing islandS and the birds may be relavent. I know not much attention was paid to the art in Michaels apt but that looked like The Island and there was another painting somewhere else but i don't remember right now. Also there may be planes or globes to find in some. The most obvious was the 3X's in Christians hotel room

The decorator gave SUN more than just a ticket. If I remember correctly there was a passport and other documents you would need to establish a new identity. The plan called for her to leave in the Black car and lay low until they had given up hope of finding her, then to fly to the US.
