View Full Version : character crosses: are they each others' constants?
Margalit 02-28-2008, 10:43 PM could one "purpose" of all the seemingly random connections the characters all have to each other provide one another with "constants"? they may not actively remember them, bu they might function that way, should they need them to.
Enter Seventy Seven 02-28-2008, 10:45 PM That's an excellent point, actually... definitely worth thinking about.
Kate731 02-28-2008, 10:46 PM Someone mentioned this (I think in a thread about the sickness) and I must say, I like this theory! It sort of "unifies" everyone.
Very interesting, and its probably the only way the crosses could be explained as non-random.

I love the idea of this
LostLaura 02-28-2008, 10:56 PM And... my mind is blown AGAIN tonight. Thanks! ;)
The people who connect them all are the "constants" that tie all the Losties together?
Hmmm. I want to see a connection here. But the part where you said that they just don't actively remember them throws me off. Daniel told Marty McHume that he had to make contact when he asked if his constant could be a person. Wouldn't that mean for your idea to work, they would have to make contact with each other, not just passively wander into the same area?
chelle 02-28-2008, 11:11 PM Like maybe someone saying, "You gotta lift it up, Brotha"? This could be cool.
If at any point in this series, Daniel says, "lift it up, brotha" I will totally pee on myself!

Yep, Like Sawyer talking to Christian Shepard in a bar about Jack, I trying to think of other instances of actual contact, I know there has been....my mind is spinning right now!
Meano Franko 02-29-2008, 02:49 AM I don't agree with this, but I like the idea.
Desmond needs a constant because he was in the hatch when he turned the failsafe key. So was Locke, he will need a constant to survive passing through the barrier, another reason he won't leave the island now :) Daniel will too, his notebook said to use Desmond as his constant if he needs to since he was exposed to radiation during his experiments.
Right?
phorkster 02-29-2008, 02:52 AM Constants are not necessarily people as well BTW. I think we will go on to find that the plane didn't crash because of Desmond, but because of hitting the anomoly. Desmond happened to be late on the button that day.

I don't see how this holds water, based upon what we saw in this episode.
Penny, Desmond's true love, is his constant, yet he had to work hard to recoginize and make contact with her.
Desmond is Daniels' constant, only because Daniel understands the significance of what the term means and actively sought to identify one.
Beyond that, there's nothing to imply any one else has a constant. A constant is something you have to work at.
cintibud 02-29-2008, 07:36 AM Hmmm. First post, please excuse, but with the thought about constants not needing to be a person. I always wondered why Kate was so obsessed with the toy airplane she got from Tom (old friend). Could that be her constant? She went through a lot to get it back.
Sorry if this has already been brought up

yes i was just thinking the same. And it could be true for Ben too ...the doll Annie gave him seems to be very important for him, and Sawyer has his letter.
cintibud 02-29-2008, 08:30 AM But Cooper ripped up Sawyer's letter - wonder if that will lead to problems if this line of reasoning is correct. By the same token Cooper could be Locke's Constant. Could that be a reason why Ben told Locke he needed to kill Cooper?
This is getting interesting. Wonder what other constants we could come up with. Charlie's Guitar? Didn't Eko take a Cross off Yemi's body? Sayid picture of Nadia?

This is a great theory. It didn't even occur to me until I read this post just how critical that entry in Daniel's journal might be. Is it possible that the reason they don't remember each other due to the fact that they are altering the outcome as they go?
Margalit 02-29-2008, 02:57 PM I admit I didn't have it all worked out when I first proposed it, but the flashbacks with characters crossing paths just always seemed so important. (And wasn't there a little extra about all those connections on one of the dvds?) some posters have asked about other encounters: there was christian and ana lucia, charlie and des, hurley on the tv when jin was at that guy's house, sawyer and boone (i think) at the police station; charlie in the hotel elevator with who? shannon and boone, maybe? Then there are sort of "once removed" connections, that perhaps don't count: locke and nadia, sayid and kate's father; sawyer and kate's mother. I just think this is going to figure in somehow...
