Well, my mom (and most of her family) is from there, I've spent many summers there, and we may move there down the road!!! I LOVE Texas, best state in the world. Who cares if Alaska is "bigger"? :p And I had an ancestor who died fighting for the Alamo!

Can I join, Moji?

My mom is from Houston...her family is from all over. A lot of them are dead now, but mostly that same area, and around.....nearby. Ever heard of Lufkin?

LostKitty

A day?!? :eek2: I don't know what weather you've been having but none of my weather has lasted anywhere near a day!

Oh, and for the record, I'm from Dallas and I too love Dr. Pepper, but I think my Texas quirk is my love for the word y'all (totally proud of it!) and my even greater love for gravy. mmmm...chicken fried steak...
And I'm born Texan. :cowboy:

SAWMO! I love how your avi says "All I ask of You" and your personal text says "no more talk of darkness". A love of Phantom of the Opera might be e-hereditary!

Welcome, new members!!!

LostKitty- I have family there, and...there's nothing to do but go to WalMart! My mom lived there- she thinks it's terrible.

LostKitty
03-10-2008, 06:52 PM
Oh, I love Phantom of the Opera! *sigh* :in_love:

shmyshmy, yeah, Dallas is pretty cool. they're doing a lot of work right now. I think we're trying to get the olympics, which I really don't want. Traffic is bad enough without shoving a couple extra million people into the mix! But the work they're doing is pretty neat. I've never actually made it to El Paso. :undecide:

Me_Kate, yeah, that's the impression I have of Lufkin. I briefly lived in a city outside of Dallas called Forney and there wasn't even a WalMart to go to! They've since built up the area, but at the time there was just a Dairy Queen, a McDonalds, and a Brookshires (and all closed by 10). :)

Me_Kate_me_Throw_Rock
03-10-2008, 07:46 PM
Next time I go to Lufkin I want to go to Cavendar's Boot City. Really what we do there is visit family and friends....not much else. My sister is giving the impression of wanting to move there...I and my mom are silently screaming NO!!! Lol.

I have been to forney!!

I grew up in a town that only had a Dairy Queen (Thats what I like about Texas *sings*) I always had to get a Butterfinger and heath bar Blizzard. Every Time.

Where I live is a very small town, but we have a wal mart and they went 24 hours last year, and Brookshires is the best, My fave grocery store!! (we have one of those too, along with a Braums, McDonalds, Sonic, Chicken Express, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut... and thats all LOL)

I really want to go to the Superbowl in 2010 when its in the new Arlington stadium... I  football

:football: Yay football! I am, of course, a die-hard Cowboys fan. I remember being a kid and watching them win all those superbowls. There was so much pride in the city. And my mom would let me take off school to go see the parade. So I've stuck by them through thick and thin and am so happy to see them winning again! I also went to the pro-bowl last month and half the team was Cowboys! It was awesome.

LostKitty

Oh, I love Romo! No matter what happens he's always in a good mood and just happy to be there.

Yes, I had planned to go to Hawaii for the premiere party but then they announced that it wasn't happening and I still had plane tickets. We were there for two weeks and yes, we did find the Lost set. It was amazing. It was like mecca for me. My dad was so proud that I didn't touch anything. But it would have been wrong to touch something so sacred! We also found the pala ferry dock. I would have liked to go to Others camp but didn't find it until the last day we were there. :undecide:

Traffic can be bad, I was on my way back from St. Louis, and I don't really remember how we ended up in Dallas but what I do remember is being stuck in trafic for a long time. Still it's a beautiful city, I happen to think it's very modern compared to El Paso  Well I don't live there, but I would totally want to go there if the olimpycs were there

Hi everybody! Or, should I say 'Howdy!'

Another Texan here, from the Houston area (Cypress to be exact). This is an awesome thread. Thanks for starting it.

As a born and bred Texan, my favorite sayings are 'fixin' to' and 'might coulda'.

As far as the weather, my husband's home office, which is in Cleburne (near Ft. Worth), was demolished by a tornado last night! Ugh! The good news is, he had all of his work backed up on his laptop at home.

Anyway, sign me up for the LOST in Texas Group, please. Thanks!

I live in Suburban Hell, aka The Woodlands. It's north of Houston.

Wasn't born or raised here (born and raise in that, ... ok, I don't want to get killed for mentioning the name, but just recite the picante sauce comercial about the brand that is made in that northeastern city, and you'll know what city I originally come from) ,so I've no Texas quirks, but I have learned to love buttermilk pie, chicken fried steak, and barbeque.

we made it 3 nights ago and I was in so much pain after, but it was so worth it.

I will admit that it took me a good long minute to figure out what chicken fried steak was--someone ordered for me--and when it came, I still wasn't too sure about it since it was hidden under this beige gravy. Was it chicken? Was it beef? Was it something I shouldn't ask about? Good stuff, however. That and the pie. Wow, that buttermilk pie stuff is beyond good. Whoever thought up making such a pie deserves some kind of reward.

Dark Horse, every been to Goodson's on 249 south of 2920? Or Rib Tickler (also on 249, but north of 2920)?

Pink Human
04-15-2008, 10:30 PM
How does one describe The Woodlands--well, let's just say that when the Others' compound was first seen, I turned to my spouse and went, "Oh (bleep) no!! They're living in Suburban Hell!!!" We cracked up so hard that we had to rewatch the episode later on because we couldn't stop laughing for several minutes and missed too much.

And within 2 miles of my house there is a street called ... Wisteria Drive. Ok, fine, it's not Wisteria Lane, but the basic Desp. Hswf -iness concept of it is the same.

Me_Kate_me_Throw_Rock
04-16-2008, 12:56 AM
Hmmm....well, that's too bad!

You ever been to Lake Conroe?

Dark Horse
04-16-2008, 08:14 AM
Thanks for the warm welcome everybody!

Pink, I've never been to either of those restaurants (just moved into this area from Sugar Land), but I've heard how great Rib Tickler is. It's on our list to try. Just the name sounds fantastic.

Woodlands = 'suburban hell' . . . hahaha ... My brother used to live there and kinda felt the same way. It's very pretty though, with all the trees.

Pink Human
04-16-2008, 07:21 PM
Been to Lake Conroe--a friend has a lake house there.

And, yes, The Woodlands does have trees (pines mostly since I believe I-45 is the rough western edge of the piney belt that runs through Louisiana). But if I had to describe the 'hoods, I would have to say that they are filled with McMansions decorated McTuscany style by people who have never been to Italy, or at the most only went to Italy for two weeks one summer. Either that of it looks like Pottery Barn vomited up the same thing for all the thiry-somethings who wanted to be "different" when they moved into their new McMansions.

Everybody's house looks the same; it's sort of like living in Clonesville.

The people look the same, too. One just has to walk into a Starbucks and people-watch for about fifteen minutes to notice the sameness. And you can't throw a stone without hitting a Starbucks--there will be one on the corner of two major streets PLUS one inside the grocery store at that same intersection.

I think urban or rural would be better myself since at least those two aren't completely white bready. But The Woodlands is 100% suburb. If you like suburbia, The Woodlands is fantastic. If you like something besides loaves and loaves and loaves of nothing but white bread as far as the eye can see, well, this is the place.

It's why I laughed so hard when the Others' compound was first shown--all the little houses looking exactly alike and joined by pristine sidewalks plus all of the people dressed like they'd shopped at J. Crew or Banana Republic. And then there was the book club scene and the muffin scene. So suburban.
