View Full Version : Bernard... finally a voice of reason.
fourthpoliceman 03-16-2008, 01:53 AM Nothing truly insightful, but I've seen a lot of threads and posters rooting for Team Locke. Well, as the thread title states... Could Bernard in his heart to heart chat with Jin truly reveal what is honest, genuine, and good?
Bernard: She's sick. Dying. Well at least she was dying...She says she's better now. She says it's this place... the island. But when the camp spit up, I was sure that she'd go with Locke. Why would she want to leave the island and risk getting sick again?
Jin: Then why did you stay with Jack?
Benard: Because it was the right thing to do. Because Locke, he's a murderer. See, it's all about karma, Jin. Do you know karma? We make bad choices, bad things happen to you. But, you make good choices and good.... [Jin catches fish] ....you got one!!.. hey look at that!!. You see... that's karma. We must be the good guys uh?
What is good and what is bad has been argued here on the fuse since its inception. Understandably, good and bad are not as easy as black and white... so cut and dry. But, if there is a scale of truth.... of reason.. then did Bernard reveal it here? I'd like to think so.
saratoga 03-16-2008, 08:32 PM You know what bothered me about Bernard reasoning that Locke is a murderer?
Jack pulled the trigger.
i_wana_get_lost_with_starla 03-16-2008, 08:46 PM Bernard is a voice of reason, because of his love for his wife.
When you're priorities are as clear as Bernard's.. you see everything is a different shade of light, and everything around you makes sense and has a purpose.
Bernard was truly the only guy who could have set Jin straight, and it was a great scene. One of Bernards best imo. ; )

I agree with that. It is because of his love for his wife that he sees things in a different perspective.

I did love the fact that what Bernard said set Jin straight and made him consider what part he might have played in what Sun did. Sun and Jin have had a new start on the island and it is certainly not worth throwing it away. They were forced to take a fresh look at their relationship and they came through it stronger. I've loved watching how they've become stronger as a couple. A big change since that scene on the beach where Jin gave Sun a hard time and told her to cover up.
Gotta love Bernard. It was really a very touching scene.
engulfthemanatee 03-16-2008, 10:00 PM Bernard certainly is the voice of the "average Joe" on Lost (yes, even more so than numbers-cursed, lottery-winning Hurley). Sure the average person would say that Locke is a murderer, but the average person also wouldn't understand the spiritual and personal journey that he is going through, and the crap life he'd been through pre-Island. I don't think Bernard's comment should be taken as the last word on Locke by a long shot. :)

I've never had an issue with anyone and/or any character who embarks on a "spiritual and personal journey". That said, but at who's expense?
I would argue that each and every single lostie has begun a "personal and spiritual journey" of sorts since arriving on the island. Each shown via flashback, the trials and hurt they have had to overcome and deal with. Is Bernard's voice the "last word"? Surely not... but if the musical score that accompanied that scene indicates further truth and sincerity... then it is a beginning.

You know what bothers me aside from that?
So did Bernard, and people actually died.

Since Ben is one of the good guys, Bernard has joined the others.

I totally agree...Man of Science (Jack) and Man of Faith (Locke) and Ben (the others and their horrors/motives aside)...what a poignant, simple and beautiful moment between two married men with their own personal pain and issues....fishing and just sharing....totally wonderful scene for me...and so deep and far reaching.....Bernard's love for Rose yet again simplified, basically it is her call and I will follow, because it is right and true and with that beautiful simplicity and honesty the far reaching effects were......Jin forgave Sun....Sun and Jin were united....and Sun and Hurley and Sun's beautiful baby daughter share that moment in memory of Jin....and Bernard's love for Rose cemented in his heart yet again......all because of a "moment in time" taken by Bernard simply and honestly as two men sharing (no strings attached or ulterior motives)......truly it was amazing and so totally 'human' in its context...awesome!!
For those who think Bernard a murderer....sheesh....in Rose's own words...remember you are a dentist so don't go being a hero....she just wanted him to survive for her and he just wanted (as always) her to survive for him.....he barely knew what he was doing...just following Sayid's orders...all Bernard knows is that his life is complete with Rose no matter where he is or what is happening around him.....TPTB got it right as they did the awesome "time" reaching effects of Desmond and Penny.....
