The other day, someone let me in line ahead of them, because I have just a few items.

After I told my friend in work that someone emptied & stole my 6 coffee mugs full of pennies that I had in my desk which I've been saving for 10 years; I came in the next morning to a brand new giant coffee mug full of shiny pennies. The missing pennies were not worth half as much as my friend's thoughtful "gift"

That's what I'm talking about.

I also got an amazing gift from someone I met here. I can't say who or what but I was completely blown away at the thoughtfulness and the talent that went into making it. This person is a true artist in the first degree.

When our house burned down a few months ago, we got a lot of love and support from family, friends, & neighbors, but were really surprised one day when we received a letter from a church in another state. Turns out, somehow the news of the fire traveled and somewhere down the line someone told our story to their church congregation. They took up a collection and suddenly there we stood with a check for $500 from a tiny church in Mississippi we'd never heard of! Talk about random kindness! :)

It did give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

It is the best when you are completely taken by surprise. The kindness of strangers giving anonymously.

LiL, I hope you and your family are well and have found another home. I can't imagine what it would be like.

Thanks, Sam. :)

It was a horrendous, surreal experience to watch everything we owned go up in smoke and flames and to suddenly be homeless. It was a horrible feeling to wonder, "Where are we going to sleep? What are we going to do? Where do we go?"
I mean, it's not like asking to spend a couple of nights at a friend's house. We needed somewhere to be long term and we had no "extra" money to do any of that right then. Bleeahhh.....

The Red Cross was awesome though. They showed up seemingly just minutes after the fire trucks! They were there even before the camera crews for the local news stations. They helped us get some basic items like food, shoes (we had all run out of the house barefoot) clothing & toiletries, etc. I feel bad that I complained about them during the Katrina disaster --- I mean, they were just overwhelmed like every other agency trying to help. :frown:

But anyway, after completely imposing on our in-laws for several weeks ;) we found a rent house to stay in while our home is being rebuilt. The insurance money will be a little short and we'll have to come up with some $$$ to cover the difference, but at least we'll be back home this year.

I couldn't begin to express all the emotions we've gone through but we are just happy all of us (+ pets!) made it out ok and we are all together --- that is what is the most important after all.

You and your extended family are safe, that's the most important thing.

I haven't been through anything like that but there are times, that come along in your life, that make you realize all that other stuff is just stuff.

I hope the house comes out the way you want it and the fire will just be a memory and a story to talk about in the future, a "Remember when..."

Sam, I love the idea for this thread. I saw your post in the other, and looked for it.

Every night before bed, I count my blessings. I've been through a lot in the past year and a half. A seperation and divorce, a move across country with 3 kids, doing everything 24/7, finding a job after staying home with the kids for 10 years.... It hasn't been easy. But when I stop and think about everything I DO have, the good soooo outweighs the bad. I am thankful for SO much!! I have my health, my (wonderful, smart, funny, exceptional) kids, a roof over our heads, food, clothing, family & friends closeby now, support, a new job, so much to name!!

LiL, I didn't know you went through that this year! I am so glad your family (and fuzzy family!!) are all safe!!

Thank you, goddess! :D

Yeah, I got a little cr*p from some people about running back into my burning house to rescue my chihuahua, but there was no way in hell I was leaving him in there!

But back to the idea of Sam's thread, I could list so many acts of kindness we received after the fire. Of course, our family, friends, and neighbors were angels but I think we were the most touched by the little surprises we received from complete strangers that were moved by our story (which made the 10:00 news so I guess a lot of people saw it).

This may sound silly, but one of the most wonderful things we received was a box with several robes in it. Oh it was so nice to snuggle up in those soft robes! It was such a comforting feeling - like getting a warm hug - and gave us that "home" feeling that we were missing so much. Something as simple as some cuddly robes did so much to heal the hurt.

So what simple acts really lifted you today???

What really lifted me today? That you both have shared this.

Goddess...I sort of have been keeping up with what you've been going through. (But I can't mention where.) It takes courage and faith to make those big changes.

LiL - I wouldn't have been able to leave my dog inside either, no matter what anyone says, they are not just animals.

I love the story about the robes. Something to really remember, seemingly small but offered such comfort.

 let the hugs multiply

Sam -great idea for a thread..

LIL - what a terrible event, but a great illustration that there's good in the world..

goddess - big hugs, supermom

What lifted me lately: I was at the grocery store yesterday with my sister, trying to juggle the cart, bags, and other stuff.. A gentleman stopped and helped me get everything in the car. Made my day.

Sam, thanks for this thread. :) I needed to check back and read it again after Thursday night's LOST episode.

Maybe it's a little post traumatic stress kicking in or something but seeing Claire's house firebombed and burnt down to the framings shook me a bit. Then I got angry, really really ANGRY, after they found Claire and she was perfectly fine and beautiful with nary a singed hair on her. WTF???!!!

That episode insulted me and everyone else who has ever experienced a fire. I was disgusted and pissed off!
Here's the thread I ranted on:

LiL

I'm watching the episode again and I'm not sure if Claire was in the house, that doesn't matter one way or the other, I think she may have extra protection surrounding her, like Hurley has it also.

I came to post something nice.

One of the ladies that works at a bakery, went out of her way to help me get my roommate's birthday cake. It's a special cake and they usually have it but they didn't today so she called another of their bakeries, that is by me and they had the cake. Yeah! Score cake (http://www.kirstensdanishbakery.com/assets/images/gallery/authentic/princess-cake-2.jpg).

That's a pretty cake! What's it filled with???

It looks like a giant cookie. D*mn, now I'm hungry. :D

Oh, and I'm perfectly fine with the idea that something supernatural protected Claire from any visible sign that there was ever a fire near her, but it irked me to no end that no one on the show thought it odd that she looked so perfectly preserved after her house got firebombed.

As an aside, but related observation, Sawyer should have had some signs of heat or burn damage as well - being he was so close to the explosion.

If my own pet theory holds true, then none of this matters as far as the show's mysteries go. But still, you'd think SOMEONE would have made some little comment about how well Sawyer & Claire came through that event....

I'm done ranting now! ;)

My kids actually prefer the cheap ice cream to the expensive ice cream.
