When I checked the Fuse today, I noticed the ad at the top of the message board main menu:
MICHAEL BUBLE'
SEE THE NEW VIDEO FOR "LOST"
Ok, so I didn't read it completely, I just saw "new video for LOST" and clicked. Well, it's not a new video for LOST the tv show, it is a music video for a new song Buble' has recorded.
The song is fine, I even listened to the whole thing. But I'm a little aggravated that the ad makes sure that "LOST" is in all caps (exactly like the tv show and unlike most song titles) and sitting atop a LOST fan message board. It's obvious that it was intended to temporarily fool LOST tv show fans into clicking it.
SO, what do you think about these types of ad practices?
* On the one hand, I was exposed to music I might not have ordinarily listened to and found it relatively listenable and pleasing.
(can't say the same for the insipid, overly melodramatic video but whatever ...)
* On the other hand, it still left a mildly bitter taste in my mouth since it seems they felt they had to purposely trick people to visit their site. Why?
Is Buble' a particularly reprehensible person? Is it normally difficult to attract people to listen to Buble's music? I wouldn't think it would be. I think his sound would appeal to most light pop afficionados - the song itself is nice ... appealing even. So what's with the purposeful miscommunication?
Good advertising should not raise these types of questions in the consumer's mind.
This is what I get for taking all those Advertising courses in college. During the LOST break, I am analyzing the psychology between ads and their target audience.
LOST needs to return to the air ........ soon ....
