View Full Version : The piano
DallasElizabeth 04-24-2008, 10:30 PM For the record, that piano in Ben's house is in remarkably good tune. It's been kept tuned regularly, considering the tropical clime and rains, and is in good mechanical repair from a playing point of view.
Guess this is up there with "why doesn't Sawyer's beard grow" and the like... but it seemed worth mentioning.
Kate731 04-24-2008, 11:01 PM For the record, I love that piece. Rachmaninoff, I believe.

Good answer, Kate. It's Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in C# minor."
Kate731 04-24-2008, 11:08 PM I vaguely remember attempting to play it back in my piano-playing days... and not being able to reach the chords. (Dratted Rachmaninoff and his gigantic hands!)
PapaThor 04-24-2008, 11:14 PM Ben is not only a good piano player but a darn good fighter as well.
Is there anything he can't do?
Aversion 04-24-2008, 11:16 PM Why wouldn't a piano that's used regularly be kept in tune and in good condition. I lived in the tropics as a kid and our piano survived just fine. It's possible Ben could have tuned it himself the day before. I think the beard is a much bigger mystery....
xzeox 04-24-2008, 11:19 PM They have a full fledged network of houses with running water and food on the island and your surprised about a piano being kept in good shape?
Caliban2 04-24-2008, 11:23 PM If Ben can play Rachmaninoff surely he can tune a piano, or have someone trained to do so. His talents never cease to amaze.
More curiously, who taught him classical piano? Nobody thus far in the Dharma has shown us this talent. I'm sure there may have been someone. But this really comes out of nowhere.
Maybe Mikhail? He's Russian. No!!! It's Mikhail's cow, the one that the copter pilot saw, its a cow virtuoso.
spoops 04-24-2008, 11:54 PM Rachmaninoff, The Isle of The Dead
prelude in C# minor
axpo23 04-24-2008, 11:54 PM That makes sense, doesn't it?
BrothaJefe316 04-25-2008, 12:10 AM Love it! I'm listening to it right now.:)
erins 04-25-2008, 01:13 AM good catch! thanks for sharing!

That was no cow-it was a bull. Take a look when it turns around. Look what's hangin.
Billy Shears 04-29-2008, 02:59 AM It sounded great. Was Michael Emerson really playing it?
uncertaingreatness 04-29-2008, 06:08 AM A little off-topic (forgive me if this is against the rules, I'm new here), but along the lines of the piano. Imagine if that was the same piano that Charlie received as a child for Christmas. Not just the prop, but Charlie's actual piano in the show. Somehow Ben went out of his way to purchase Charlie's old piano that his brother sold.
I wouldn't put it past the writers, but we know a few characters now that can play the piano (Jack, Sun, Charlie, etc.) so I suppose it's a stretch.
JPolarBear 04-29-2008, 01:19 PM Here's a thought, we saw the painting in Kate's future house of the 'door in the sky' with a keyboard below it.(and musical terms in Italian next to it) Charlie had to play a tune to open the jammed comm. line. They said it had been programmed by a musician.
From that painting, I had guessed that a piano and a certain tune may be a key to opening whatever portal they travel thru.
Sooo, Could Benry and his piano playing ability have some greater importance?
We now know that Benry is a musician.
Maybe he plays a keyboard in the smokie cave to summon smokie? Or plays a certain tune to open the portal he goes to Tunisia from?
Just a wild thought, trying to connect some dots..

In Greek mythology,Orpheus used his musical skills to lull Cerberus( the guardian of the Underworld) to sleep so someone could get past Cerberus. Music calms the savage beast?
richlost 04-29-2008, 01:52 PM Micheal Emerson was not playing the piano, his fingers barely touched the keys, it was dubbed by a foley artist.
stillmotion 04-29-2008, 03:43 PM Jack plays the piano too...because Jack is really Ben...
ok, maybe not.
