View Full Version : Who built the barracks?
kokobware 04-29-2008, 10:31 AM Another thread got me thinking about this...
Who built the Dharma barracks?
I'm assuming Dharma, right?
So did they know about this ancient room (i'm assuming ancient, due to the hieroglyphs, and the fact that it was giant moving rock slab) and built the house around it?
And if Ben actually did summon Smokey, wouldn't that mean that Dharma knew about the origin of the monster, and possibly how to control it?
Then why put up the electro-magnetic fence deally? If they were just keeping people out and not Smokey, seems like there would be easier ways, right?
Any thoughts?
EmptyJar 04-29-2008, 11:05 AM Perhaps a big part of what DHARMA was doing was to trap smokie (using that fence and that odd cave thing under Ben's house) and study or try to control it. Maybe they learned how to and Ben uses that knowledge (note that ben told tehm to run for it, as if perhaps no one can 'fully' control smokie).
Also, i wonder... who had Bens' house before Ben? Obviously some higher up, right? I mean why trust all those secret dealies to just a "Work Man" and his son?
Fierro 04-29-2008, 12:37 PM Usually, I would say Dharma...But I am gonna propose another idea:
Widmore.
The Hostiles were living at the Barracks when Dharma arrived.
Perhaps Widmore's people were just enjoying the benefits of the island. You know? NO cancer, healing properties, etc.
They were living their own utopia with a few selected lucky families until one day the intruders arrived.
Hanso and his team of scientists, of course!
They won a ery important battle against the original hostiles and took over the barracks. Then, slowly they took over the whole island. Then a whole Dharma infrastracture was built all over this magical island.
Widmore had lost his island to Hanso.
But then some decades after, a boy came along. His name was Benjamin Linus. He made friends with the hostiles...So they joined forces. Widmore's plan was to recover his island using Ben's help from within Dharma itself.
So Ben played along. He helped Widmore and the hostiles wipe out Dharma, but not long after, he betrayed Widmore, stealing the island from him.
Im Puzzled 04-29-2008, 12:37 PM I had this same thought today! 'But ya beat me to posting it.:) I wonder if Dharma had some kind of control of Smokey why did they then need the death fence?

They don't have control over Smokie. Only one person does: Jacob.
Smokie is a wild beast.
The way I think the Sonic Fence works is that they gathered inside the Barracks, turn on the fence and go to that mysterious ancient room and let Smokie free, by fliping a switch, moving a rock or something.
Then they just wait until Smokie had gotten rid of any intruders.
I wonder if they used that on Dharma?
But, unlike the freighters, perhaps Dharma did have a weapon on their side that could help calm down Smokie when they invaded the island for the first time...
Was it Jacob?

Im sure they knew something about it, they built a house around it right? lol.
Its pretty clear the entrance is also above ground, then possibly leading down to a tunnel or vent. A big factor would be who lived in the Ben's house, before Ben.
The sonic fence is there, because just as we saw with Ben, you can summon smokey, but its still wild. Smokey is also not too bright imo, all the lil' devil has to do is go over the barrier fence, or come up through the ground. I wish I was smokey lol ; ).
"duuuuddde!!"

There is a lot of strong evidence that at one time there was a civilization on the island(the four toed statue, the black rocks near the decoy village, the pillar Anthony Cooper was tied to). The indigenous people are gone, I think even someone like Richard came to the island from elsewhere. With the cave wall in Ben's house I thought maybe the barracks were built over some structure. My question is why would Dharma go around destroying these structures?
caforrest2047 04-29-2008, 10:08 PM My guess as to who's house it was before Bens, would be Horace, or possibly Candle/Waxman/Halliwax.
herrdokter 04-30-2008, 07:19 AM I was thinking about this aswell, I think they obviously built the house around it, and I will say that was Dharma, but still like how did they know what it was.. like um hey an ancient door way, lets build it into a secret room.. they knew it was an important thing, so important it had to be hid/protected in a secret/protected room.
So I guess they cleared out the island and worked on it/learned about it all, before building it all up (stations and barracks?).
Locke108 04-30-2008, 11:26 AM If the Dharma folks wanted to keep the mysterious ancient type stuff from their scientists, what better way to do it than hide the ancient type stuff right under their noses by building houses and such around them. These mysterious enclaves would be known only to the elite of Dharma. The workers and lesser scientists were probably given various cover stories. Think Manhattan project in the 40's. Only the top echelons knew they were building a bomb. Everybody else was treated like mushrooms.
The reason I am thinking this way is the continued reluctance of everyone, including Juliet to even talk about any of it (if they even know the secrets themselves). It looked to me like Karl and even Alex had no idea about the "Temple" or where it was located. If Ben's own daughter who grew up right under his nose didn't know of something as significant as the temple, she and likely most of the "Others" probably didn't know about a lot of secret Barracks stuff either.
It appears as though when each new member of the "Others" showed up to join team Ben/Jacob, they were probably indoctrinated to think they were super special and that everyone else doesn't know what I'm about to trust you with (Bonnie and Greta style). They are all probably told to keep anything they know or see to themselves. Ben probably has one theme that he reveals to everyone to kind of "glue" the group together but the rest is all secrets.
This had to have started all early on in the Widmore days on the island when Ben was still a lad and Ben just kept up the mystery when he brought newbies like Mikhail and Juliet on board.
This all makes me think that Widmore built them. The styles are late 20th century so they aren't "ancient" structures. They were there when Ben was a lad so that means the Others didn't build them. My best guess is they were built in the 60's or early 70's which gives me the impression Widmore had his hand in it.
What does everybody else think about this? I'm just thinking out loud.

It seems that Widmore had the island at some point in the past. That's waht he sugested. Then, we have 'the hostiles'. They were there before Dharma and no one knew where they came from. Just put 2 and 2 together.
Like I said a couple of posts above: Widmore found the island before Hanso. He built the barracks. His selected community was enjoying the power of the island until Hanso came along. They became 'the hostiles', just like Ben and his people were labeled 'the others' by the losties.
In a few words: Hanso stole the island from Widmore, Ben recovered the island FOR Widmore. Later on, Ben stole the island FROM Widmore.

Did you ever think Widmore was behind Dharma? He could have used the identity of Hanso as a front to hide his involvement. He could have used the we're looking for world peace, betterment of mankind ethos to recruit otherwise good people into Dharma, so they wouldn't realize they were working for everything they were studyng the island to fight against. There has been evidence that Dharma wasn't exactly on the up and up, Roger Linus certainly didn't expect to be shot at and he didn't expect his commitment to be lifetime, the presence of poison gas in The Tempest, Ben didn't put that there, he just used it to wipe out Dharma. From Widmore's statements:"Everything you had you took from me" and The island is mine, always was, and will be again, I thought Widmore was behind Dharma, Ben controls the Dharmma facilities, which he took and if Widmore was behind Dharma he would have felt like the island was his.
mom2haylil 04-30-2008, 03:12 PM I think that whoever was in charge of Dharma lived in that house- I doubt it was Horace- I don't think he was very important. The secret room was built around the doorway to hide it even within the house- so I am assuming this is not the same house that he grew up in, but one that he took over after the purge. Perchance it was Widmore's? I also think that it will end up being some sort of tunnel to another station(maybe the mysterious Orchid) or the Temple. I do think that Ben did call Smokey somehow from that doorway, but I think that is leads somewhere too. I thought it might actually be a "time machine" at first, but I am thinking it is probably just a passage.

I like this theory.
How much stock do you put in the Lost Experience though? They painted Alvar Hanso to be pretty decent philanthropist-type guy. Although people in his foundation were pretty corrupt, so I suppose they are the ones who could have done the stealing, without Hanso's knowledge.
Also, from the hints they've dropped about the Black Rock, an early Hanso family member was on board. Leads me to believe that they (Hansos) foudn the island a loooong time ago. It would probably predate Widmore's existence. Of course who knows anything about time anymore in this show, with the way things are headed.
Either way, I like your thought process on this one.

Thanks! Yeah. Magnus Hanso might have been the first person from the new world to find the island. His journals might have been the reason why Hanso and Widmore found the island in the first place.
I think they both might have been using their resources to find the island for a long time. But Widmore did it first.
There got to be some reason why he thinks the island is his. He doesn't look like a crazy guy. He knows what he is talkiing about. So at some point in the past, He HAS to have been on the island. having total control over it.
Also, could it be possible that there was a Widmore ancestor aboard the Black Rock, too?;)
Or Charles's grand grand father was the one who help Magnus find the island?

Someone was financing the hostiles and I think it was Widmore. But after they got rid of Hanso and Dharma they got rid of Widmore too. Double crossed him. I think it was Ben who did it.
