"The Beginning of the End" was the first time in four years that I thought I might not make it to the end with LOST. I hated the episde, largely because of Alex's brutal death. But I was also extremely upset that we returned to Nadia's storyline--after four years of buildup and tantalizing annual glimpses of her--only to visit her funeral and hear about her murder. That's IT?
I can't stand what's happened to Sayid. Nadia came into his life and urged him to be a better person. How would she feel about what he's become--an unquestioning hitman and lackey for a psychopath? For that matter, what would Shannon have thought?
WE the fans know the wonderful parts of Sayid's character. We know that he's kind, compassionate, courageous, a good leader, flexible, resourceful, smart, and logical (well, when Ben isn't involved). Yet Sayid has, time and again, made terrible choices in his life. Over and over, he has been put in impossible situations that led him further to the dark side. Now his degradation is total. I cannot see a way there can EVER be a happy ending for Sayid. The only possible satisfaction left to him is to give his life for others.
Why do such bad things keep happening to a basically good and decent person who tries to do right with the life given him?
I know life has been hard for all the Lostaways, yet everyone but Sayid has had some moments of lightness and relaxation along the way--whether it's exploring the pop-culture options in Otherville, bonding with the guys over beer in the Dharma van, telling ghost stories in Korean around the campfire, or flirting with Kate. Yet Sayid literally has not had a single happy moment in his life since Season 1--the morning he and Shannon walked back to camp along the beach after their overnight picnic, smiling and chatting.
That moment was immediately followed by hearing the news of Boone's grisly death; dealing with crazy Locke and Shannon's crazy idea of killing him; trying to figure out the Hatch; helping the Lostaways move to the cave to hide from the Others who might or might not be coming; rescuing Aaron; facing Wet!Walt; watching Shannon die in his arms; being held hostage at gunpoint by an out-of-control ex-LAPD cop; putting out Charlie's fire; dealing with "Henry" and breaking down in front of him; going on a trek with his lover's killer to dig up the grave of "Henry's" "wife"; figuring out Michael's betrayal and what to do about it; failing disastrously on his rescue mission and almost getting Sun killed; going on another rescue mission to Otherville; getting caught and tied humiliatingly to a porch swing; joining the don't-tell-Jack conspiracy and figuring out what to do about Naomi; getting shot; making the 'noble' decision to let Mikhail go, a decision that led to Charlie's death; planning the Other ambush at the beach camp; getting caught; getting rescued by Hurley; going to Otherville for a hostage swap; getting caught; negotiating a helicopter ride to the freighter; dealing with Desmond's time-travel freakout; getting arrested again on the freaky freighter; dealing with Michael's betrayal . . . .
And we all know what happens to Sayid AFTER he gets off the island.
The man literally hasn't had a single moment of peace or happiness, except, presumably, during his all-too-brief marriage.
As Sayid's life got more and more awful, I wanted more and more for him to have his happy ending. I hate that he never will. It doesn't look as if there'll be much in the way of happy endings for the Lostaways, but Sayid, after all his suffering, deserved redemption and happiness more than anyone else.
