View Full Version : Six Degrees of Separation
Perfect10 03-29-2005, 01:37 AM In all of the boards, I think everyone is trying to connect each of the characters to one another, so I figured, why not gather everyone's ideas together into one topic?* Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I didn't see any one place for all of the connections.
So far I've thought of...
~Sawyer and Jack's father talking in the bar
~Seeing each other in the police station - Boone and Sawyer
Some possibilities that are being discussed on the board:
~Hurley, Boone and Jin through the watch delivery
~Hurley and Locke through the box company?
Anyone have any other ideas?
mandyox 03-29-2005, 01:38 AM it was boone and sawyer at the police station

shootfire 03-30-2005, 03:50 PM I think there could be something or someone in each character's backstory that may connect the characters. Some of the backstories seem pretty trivial, while others seem awfully meaningful. Still what doesn't seem to mean anything now, becomes more meaningful once we are given another piece of information. I think what we will see in the fullness of time, is that all the characters are connected. They are connected because of decisions they have made, or maybe because of the people with whom they have chosen to interact?
My theory of connectedness is one of the things that makes me appreciate transcripts. I keep thinking that dialog, no matter how inconsequential it seems in the current context, drives the plot. When something is touched on in someone's backstory and not fully explained, I wonder what it means to the plot. Personally, I would be extremely suprised if a lot of these connections are not made over time. I'm sure some of them will be dropped as a matter of necessity, but I'm equally sure that many connections have been, at least, set up for exploration.
There are an awful lot of referrences to manufacturing businesses of one kind or another. In Charlie's backstory, Lucy's father, Mr. Heatherton, is buying a paper company. He also owns a copier company. Sun's father owns a car company, per Sun in HOTRS. Hurley owned a sneaker company in Canada, a box company in Tustin, and orange futures. Boone is the COO of a wedding clothing business that his mother owns. I'm sure there are more, I just haven't reread all the transcripts yet specifically for this kind of reference. The creative team could devote a whole season to exploring this kind of connection. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see another Hurley-centric episode that includes another meeting with his accountant.......you see where I'm going here?
The fact that Michael was an artist and wanted to be a father vs. Claire's Thomas, an artist, who chose not to be a father is a point that I would expect to be explored. Is there some connection there? I think there probably is. It's just a little too poetic to ignore. I am afraid that this connection is in jeopardy, with the season ending soon. This season has focused a lot on fatherhood, and I think it should be addressed this season. Alas, it looks as if it will not be addressed, unless there is a continuing fatherhood theme.
I know the title of this thread is Six Degrees of Separation, but I'm more inclined to believe that there is more like one degree of separation between our lostaways. I know it would be a little dramatic, but I think one degree would also be an elegant solution. We've already been shown the one degree that separates Jack and Sawyer, Christian. I am also pretty sure we have seen one degree separating Hurley and Sawyer, the lotto girl. Furthermore, I am of the opinion that the one degree separating Michael, Walt, and Sayid is Susan, who specialized in international law. The not so elegant part of my theory, concerns the nature of the connections.
I don't think that the lostaways have only one connection to one other member of the group, nor do I think everyone connects to Hurley, though I agree that would be interesting. I don't think there's a single thread that connects them all. I think the stories criss-cross. I think there will be multiple connections between many of the characters. Of course, it's all theoritical at this point.... ;)

I doubt that will be an issue...Jack, for one, is not through with daddy yet
shootfire 03-30-2005, 05:04 PM Beautifully put, Shootfire!
Wow! Thanks Bess. I'm sure that some of my opinions have been partially shaped through conversations with you and others on the board, and it's nice to know that sometimes people are actually "hearing" the thing you are trying to convey.

I sure hope you're right. I still want to know what it is about Locke's father, also, that isn't cool!
Sleestak 03-30-2005, 05:28 PM A very sound theory you have there Shootfire. I also believe that they will not all be connected through one person. I also believe that some of the connections will be more like the one you mention with Michael and Claire. I don't think all the connections need to be like Sawyer meeting Jack's dad. The connection may be experiencing the same sort of event, such as Locke and Sawyer both being "raised by another". I'm not yet convinced on the Hurley/Sawyer connection. It may be the case but I'm still leaning towards it's the same actress playing two different roles.
Another connection I've seen posted is Hurley/Jin, where Hurley was on the TV when Jin went to the Minister of ???? in Korea. I think that was more forshadowing of the Numbers episode than a connection between Hurley and Jin.
Even if the writers only show connections between the 14 major characters, that may take a while. Here are those words again...time will tell.
shootfire 03-30-2005, 06:08 PM What I liked about your idea was that you used the secondary characters - I think those are the ones that will most likely provide most of the connections - I wouldn't be surprised if Shannon's Sydney boyfriend (Brian?) didn't have a connection to a connection to Sawyer or Hibbs.
Brian's involvement is very much like a variation on the romance angle, isn't it? That's a clever possible connection I hadn't really considered.

That's one of the reasons I think it's a good story for a television series. They can take all the time they want. It's just hard on the poor obsessed viewers!!! :lol2:
Now that tonight's episode is only two hours away, I suppose I had get off here and get everything done that needs doing beforehand. I don't want anyone interrupting my show with "I'm hungry, I need help with so-and-so, or did you mail that letter." Now who's life is sad, Bess?
shootfire 03-31-2005, 02:37 AM I still want to know what it is about Locke's father, also, that isn't cool!
Well, I got one of my questions answered! :lol2:
sheba 03-31-2005, 02:47 AM I will say here, what I said to my son (who promptly told me I was insane).
I believe they are all loosely connected to each other because they are connected by one degree to some as yet unseen other party.
Think of all the people you know. They probably don't all know each other, but because they are all connected to you they stand a pretty good chance of brushing into one anothers lives without knowing it.
I believe this unseen other party is the source of all (or at least most) of the mysteries on Where are we Island.
Now, if someone will please help me back into this straight jacket before the orderlies make rounds ...

Well, I got one of my questions answered!* *:lol2:
I forgot about that statement.* Conning your son out of a kidney definitely isn't cool.
