If the writers had time to stick in a completely irrelevant storylin around Jack's appendix, even though we obviously knew he was going to come out perfectly find, and nothing even remotely out of the ordinary happened during the procedure, I can't help but wonder what sort of storylines they were forced to leave out. They showed enough of Jack and Kate making out in the first 10 minutes that I was sure it was another Christina Kim fiasco. Hopefully next week's is better...

Yeah, that did seem to be a bit strange... I just wonder if the conversation at the end - when Juliet told Kate about the kiss - that it wasn't her she loved - if that was meant to be the information we needed from that scene. Again - Kate didn't say she loved Jack. She hasn't yet. Or Sawyer for that matter.

So it could be that we were given that little bit of information for the resulting conversation Jack has with Kate at the end about "I'm the one who's here - not Sawyer." However she is still keeping promises to Sawyer.

Even when Jack asked her to marry him - neither one said they loved each other...

I wouldnt say the appendix story was totally irrelevant... it set up a lot of on-island stuff (Jin and Charlotte, for example). but also, recall what Rose said...this island heals, it doesn't make people sick.

The fact that he was sick is like an omen to her and whomever else wanted to leave even though the island healed them (maybe some redshirts were hurt pre-crash too who knows). Point is, I think we now know why Rose and Bernard are not part of the O6.. as well as maybe some others.

***Mod edited*** what is to say that they did not have a much better on island storyline for a jack flashforward but were forced to cut it out as a result of losing 2 episodes, hence not having enough time to set it up? They had to show this jack flashforward as it filled in a lot of things. That jack-kate making out stuff that you talk about constitutes less then 60 seconds of screentime.

I agree on some levels that the appendix operation crap was a total waste of time, but there could be something to it because as Rose said, people don't get sick on this island.

In the end I felt like the whole episode was a bit of a waste though. There's so many things unanswered and so little time left... stop screwing around!

Everything is really starting to feel rushed though which sucks.

We're all going to have different opinions. When I saw this thread title I was like "yes! I agree! because we are getting so much more information and so many answers and so many plot twists!" which make me happy, but actually people clearly disagree. Some people think it's rushed. And whereas I thought the appendix storyline fit in well and set up a whole lot of other events that couldn't have happened otherwise (i.e.: they needed a specific plot devise), some people felt that the appendix storyline was a total waste. I disagree. So, I mean, what's new? That's what the Loved It and Hated It threads are for, I guess. ;)

You know what I really hate these threads that indulge in ridiculous hypotheticals, what is to say that they did not have a much better on island storyline for a jack flashforward but were forced to cut it out as a result of losing 2 episodes, hence not having enough time to set it up? They had to show this jack flashforward as it filled in a lot of things. That jack-kate making out stuff that you talk about constitutes less then 60 seconds of screentime.

If they really had to scramble for an idea, which I doubt they did, they could have made it Juliet whose appendix burst. It'd still fit well enough in a Jack episode if he operated on her, and at least her outcome would've still been in doubt! We all knew Jack was going to come out fine, but with Juliet (or basically anyone who's not one of the oceanic 6) there would have at least been some suspense!

The appendix storyline was used to move several things forward, moved the Kate-Jack storyline, moved the Daniel-Charlotte storyline (attraction, Can we trust them) cleverly used to find out that Charlotte speaks Korean (Paik?) and as leverage by Jin to get Sun off the island (Just after Sun sees the place where she found out she was pregnant). It introduces the fact that Jack is sick when nobody is sick (Why?). It introduces the fact that everybody the leader is sick just as rescue comes (?).

As long as this story has been crawling, they can rush all they want to!

I see nothing wrong with some faster moving action! Bring it on!

I don't think the appendix storyline was a waste. For us it wasn't about whether or not he lived but rather's effect on the characters. Juliet emerged as a leader, we got some new dynamics with the Kwons, Daniel and Charlotte. And Rose's omen. All very interesting to me.

I don't know... The whole thing felt "hinky" to me.

Jack wants to be awake. He wants Kate to hold the mirror. Juliet makes Kate leave and Bernard puts Jack under.

Then, afterwards, Juliet tells Kate she knows Jack is in love with her (Kate) and then pretty much lets Jack know that she knows he's awake and heard everything she just told Kate.

Why? So that Kate would know Jack loves her? Kate knows that. Jack told her last season.

The whole thing was just weird. Like Claire not grieving Charlie and Sawyer being bulletproof weird.

Yes, thank you.

We watchers were thinking that Rose said it all, besides what you've noted.

IMHO, the surgery was not a waste. It was a plot device used to reveal a lot of information. We now know that our Losties made a choice on whether to leave or not. Jack started to go crazy because of seeing his father (although most kind of guessed that) and his starting to doubt his abilities again (Charlie's warning about raising Aaron). The island not healing Jack, for some reason. And I am probably missing some things.

Jack had just said that he was going to get every single person off the island, and the island said "N'uh, you'd better not, and just for saying that, I'm going to let that appendix keep swelling." ;)

I welcome faster moving action! However, I didn't really see much in this episode. Juliet and Kate arguing about if she should hold the mirror or not isn't fast paced action to me.

.
Is that the same as hokey? If so, I agree.

Sure it was the device that brought out Rose's doubt and ended the romantic tension on the beach, but the actual setup and surgery came off as silly. There were other ways to accomplish the same thing that may have been more interesting to watch.

i agree the entire episode could have been condensed into 5 minutes, and Jacks operation seemed unneccesary.

BUT,Christian only appeared to Claire while Jack was under.......that was quite intentional

I have to agree to OP in the extent that now we won't have much extra stuff going on.

I want to see good stuff, not random foodfight, love-triange etc. scenes.
