On the tail of the airplane the Oceanic 6 was on when they landed in Hawaii to meet their family...

I know Kansasgal, as soon as I saw the 17's I started adding them up in my head too! lol! 1+7=8, one of the numbers, and then the total adds up too 16, one of the numbers. I have no idea if the 17's were meant to mean anything, but the numbers sure made a reapearance in this epi!

Not everything has to mean something. They're just easter eggs... something for the rabid fans to look for and go, "Ah, I found it." Plus, it's just as much fun for the writers to put 'em in there. As far as 1717, I don't even think it's an easter egg... I think it's a number that was on the plane they used.

They used a real Coast Guard plane in that shot, and in all the exterior plane shots. So I doubt the numbers on the plane meant anything...

I got a novel idea! It meant that they got to use a real Coast Guard airplane that had those numbers on it! And they didn't want to spend a lot of money to re-paint them just for a quick shot of them landing for Lost. And if they did, i'd be willing to bet they'd use obvious "Numbers", like on the speedometer, etc., etc.

You could alway check the C.G. airplane registry to see if it's listed?

Agreed. Wasn't this a Coast Guard plane? If so, perhaps someone could verify if that's a real number. While it could be CGI, it's probably not. I don't think the Coast Guard would repaint their tail numbers for a TV episode, even if the production company paid all the costs. The plane would be out of commission too long for this rather unnecessary change.

And the reason that you are seeing them focused on so closely in the shot is because they can be used as symbology on the show. You are correct 1+7=8, 1+7=8, 8+8=16, so hey, let's use a shot of that in the show for the numbers people since the numbers just happen to be in there. It also includes the geographic info Barber's Point also.

First thing I thought was 1717, a double or twin number, and I'm thinking ok, this is gonna make the Casimir/mirroring/cloning crowd take notice, since the plane the survivors are on is double numbered and are the people on the planes doubles, or different too. These people will notice that number.

Just looking at it was easy to see the numbers in it, that's almost assumed since there are so many patterns to add the numbers, etc. The feeling it gave me was more about the doubling of the numbers, ala 2 Bugs#15's, two 17's and though probably unintentional it's just to their luck that it does work in favor of the show to evoke vibes in people from showing it--such as this discussion!.

After all, it was focused on with a pretty tight shot in the show, which means if nothing else, they wanted to show it since they edit it...(<>..<>)

What we don't know is what options TPTB had. How many aircraft were available for production? Did they choose the best fit available, or was that the only aircraft available and how convenient, lookat those number?

I tend to agree that it probably isn't too important, but the above reason is used all the time and I don't buy it. They know people obsess about this stuff. They could digitally remove those numbers in less than one minute (seriously), plus they are dominant in the shot, so they were purposefully left there.

Or...the numbers mean nothing, so why bother to spend money removing them, digitally or otherwise. As to the shot, watch any movie, tv show, or real life event that involves a plane landing...it was the standard shot.

However...1717 == 8 8 ==16 is great if for no other reason than its 8 8 and 16.

ya, i get that. But you know I've never had a fortune cookie without at least one of those numbers. and 815 is 8, 15 and 8+15=23 I get it I get it. But why is the 16 so important over 15 or 23? . 8+1+5= 14 and that is not a number. What did the numbers Alex entered into the computer to turn of the radar mean? I didn't catch the 1717. They most likely don't mean anything, but it IS pretty insane how we keep seeing things adding up to those 6 numbers, over, and over, and over...
