I believe that since the beginning of Lost we have been given clues to the fact that the survivors of 815 were not supposed to leave the island. One of the clearest examples is with Kate and Sawyer.

In the season 2 episode Collision, when Kate was taking care of Sawyer in the hatch she referred to the island as home. Kate said to Sawyer, 'Hey! Hey, can you hear me?You're going to be okay. You're going to be alright. You're home.'

I think this line is especially important since this season Kate is leaving the island and Sawyer will end up staying or left on the island. It is also important because once off the island some of the members of the Oceanic 6, like Jack and Hurley, seem to realize that the island was really their home not the real world.

I think that Kate's line back in season 2 was meant to tell us that the island is where she and Sawyer belong, it's their home. That line shows that in some ways Kate understood the island was her home now and the place she should be.She understood that it was the place that Sawyer should be as well.

I know that Kate's line from The Beginning of The End, 'Are we really going home?' seems to contradict the previous line, but this one is a question. The line to Sawyer was a statement.

Another sign of Kate accepting the island as a home is when she sinks. For someone who has spent their life running being able to plant themselves into the ground shows that she feels secure here. We've seen her with her feet planted in the sand on a few different occasions, most noticeably when she told Jack about sinking with her mother, but also to a lesser extent in House of The Rising Sun ,when Jack asked her to come to the caves, and again in The Shape of Things to Come, just before she goes to talk to Jack in his tent.

In her house ,as seen in Eggtown, there is a painting that looks like a woman on the beach which reminds me both of Kate sinking and a little of Sun from In Translation when she lets go of the towel. But it especially reminds me of Kate sinking.

I think that throughout the series we have been given clues through dialogue and actions that the Oceanic survivors were not supposed to ever leave the island.
