ame en peine 06-09-2008, 11:00 PM The original Council of Elders thread was created by pacejunkie in Fall, 2006. It is my great honor to bring us into the 5th age of this thread. *tips hat to pj*

*ahem* Welcome to The Council of Elders, the group for Lost fans age 35 and over. You know who you are, so come and join. You remember eight track tapes, Donny and Marie, leg warmers, pong, Schoolhouse Rock. Maybe you watched the Monkees when it first aired, maybe you saw it when it reran on weekday afternoons when you came home from school. Either way, there's a place for us here!
So if you sometimes fret because you feel older than the combined age of every PB&J shipper on Lost Forum, you pull your hair out (or what's left of it) when someone says 'Cheech who?', then this is where you need to be.
Please state your age and then wear it proudly! :)

Perdue - glad you made it home
Briar910 - Next time I ride the Coast Starlight I will simply *have* to bring my own bottle in your honor. I've done that route a number of times. I've never been less than 8 hours late.
Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-09-2008, 11:36 PM As MOC would say...neener, neener...I'm first here one mucking up this shiny new thread...

Please don't tell me that it was you I was sitting by. ;) But the funny thing about it was that she didn't even bring her own wine. It was Amtrak brand wine. I had no idea that Amtrak had their own brand. Now that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of how Dharma brands everything. Except this was before Lost. :D
ame en peine 06-10-2008, 12:01 AM LID - I didn't read the Potter books but I saw the movies. So I'm the Cliffs Notes version of a Harry Potter fan. Does that count?
I haven't heard from CL in forever. CL! Where are yooooooooooooooouuu???
Let's put out an APB for her...
Calling all cars, calling all cars.. Be on the lookout for a red hot Latina. She may or may not be armed with scarves. Distinguishing marks include blistered fingers from being addicted to the spoiler threads, and dog paw marks on her shoulders from dancing with her rather large puppy. Proceed with caution, she's been known to bite.. Well, really it's just nibbling...

It might be me. Haven't read them. I want to... I even have a list of what the books are in order so that I don't read the wrong one accidentally. I love the movies but I've seen only 2, I think.

Perdue 06-10-2008, 12:52 AM Yes, you must win since I just signed the contract to put a new roof on my house and I'm not entirely sure where the 7000 is going to come from.
No, I didn't think it would make a good story. I really had no intention of writing about it, but many people asked WHAT HAPPENED since I never made the wedding, so I just dashed off a quick account (ignore spelling and other gross errors) so that I didn't have to repeat myself. Perhaps in a day or two I'll think it was a good story. LOL
ame en peine 06-10-2008, 01:01 AM Perdue - I think it's a good story.. Especially your name for the airline. Clever
katesnemesis 06-10-2008, 01:04 AM I'm adding my name to list. New here so have to learn the ropes

Tugwilly 06-10-2008, 06:49 AM PERDUE I am surprised you are able to put all that down w/o your head exploding , OHare & a United operation, baaaad combination. Glad you're home safe and sound. You are made of much sterner stuff than I. I would still be in a heap, weeping on the floor of the airport. The sleep deprivation alone would have done me in.
KATIE  HI
kansasgal71 06-10-2008, 12:14 PM Hello Katesnemesis!!! and LostInDelandFl.... I just voted for you and forwarded the link to all my friends and family to vote for you also!!! You will be in our prayers!!!
Guinevere 06-10-2008, 12:35 PM :groove: Dances into shiny new thread...
Perdue, bless your hear!! So sorry you had to miss the wedding. It's a great story when it's not happening to you, huh? What a lovely flight attendant as well. Hopefully, something nice will come her way in the near future. Oh yeah...I'm would love the name of the medieval technology book. I've buzzed through all my medieval history stuff and have been looking for something new and interesting.
:Welcome:, katesnemesis!! I remember the first episode of the Monkees as well because that's the day I fell in love with Mike Nesmith. I had just turned 6.
Ame - love the new Elders song1 I'll be humming this one all day.
I did housework yesterday! :cheer: Not a lot but I did feel like doing some of the basics. I'm wiped today but I feel I really accomplished something beside research with my day.
Oh yeah...I've voted several times for your house, LiD. I ijust hope they counted. I only vote once a day though. My fingers are crossed that you'll win (and you know how hard it is to type with your fingers crossed).
Baileysdad 06-10-2008, 01:48 PM Hello Elders...
I am posting this not to make a statement from one perspective over another, I am posting this because at one time, Lance and I were best friends, we traveled together, laughed together, cried together and shared our life's dreams with each other.
I want to bring attention to this problem..This is bare reality of what we face in this day and age and I ask everyone who sees symptoms in their friends, military or civilian, to encourage them to get help...

TabbyRasa 06-10-2008, 02:02 PM I am very sorry for your loss, BD. Thank you for posting...what a great photo of Lance with the Afghanistani child. His wife is incredibly brave, too.
Prayers and tears for BD, Lance, and all family and friends. Another angel in Heaven now!
Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-10-2008, 03:36 PM What a beautiful smile Lance had BD. I think of the children his life touched while he was in Afghanistan, what a blessing he must have been to them. I am so sorry for you and for his family, and for everyone suffering from the pain of his loss. Mostly I feel for him and the anguish he must have endured. We truly are failing these men and women--our best and brightest--if this has become commonplace.
Thank you for shining a light on this for us, we need to be reminded. I will pray for him and for all of his friends and family.
How are you doing BD? Your job is stressful and full of emotional turmoil. I know you have physical outlets--running on the surface of the sun. Do you have a good support system? I worry about you, and I know many of us here pray for you daily.

I know a smiley doesn't do anything... but
kansasgal71 06-10-2008, 06:17 PM My heart goes out to you BD and Lance and his family too. I have had several conversations with ... my neighbors, son's, football coach... who is a recruiter for the Marines. What can we do here, to help our soldiers adjust. His advice was to visit the VA Hospitals. My stepfather gets full benefits from the VA for PTSD. I have witness him reliving his experiences. So I have went with him to his appointments several times... just to visit and say hi and thanks. I also requested my son's preschool class to make cards on both Veterans Day and Memorial Day, that I took to the VA. I feel fortunate to live so near to Bob Dole VA Center. We really need to give so much support to our heroes. I have many current and previous soldiers in my family... this is a subject that is very near and dear to me.
BD... anything we can do... just ask... and Thanks...
Guinevere 06-10-2008, 06:21 PM BD,
I'm so very sorry about your wonderful friend Lance and will keep his family and friends in my prayers. PTSD is such an insidious disorder because it makes you think that you can't share with others what you're going through and, frankly, unless we've been through the same thing, we can't really relate as much as we would like to.
I'm glad you have a place to go to share. That's very important. Please take care and know you're in our thoughts and prayers.
ame en peine 06-10-2008, 08:32 PM BD, thanks for sharing this incredibly painful story of what is happening to our brave men and women as they return home, only to be asked to go right back. This has been in the news before - the rising rate of suicide amongst our Armed Forces. Sadly now it is brought closer to home as you and many others in his life mourn the senseless loss of Lance. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and those whose lives he touched, and with you - his old friend. Echoing LID's sentiments also.. you have become a part of our"prayer ring" it seems.
Baileysdad 06-10-2008, 08:49 PM Thank you for shining a light on this for us, we need to be reminded. I will pray for him and for all of his friends and family.
Thank you...that means a great deal to me.
How are you doing BD? Your job is stressful and full of emotional turmoil. I know you have physical outlets--running on the surface of the sun. Do you have a good support system? I worry about you, and I know many of us here pray for you daily.
I am doing okay...just really upset about this news...hard to grasp.
I have a wonderful support system here...and I make sure I chill out when not on duty and I make sure I don't take it home with me...and knowing my Elder family is looking out for me makes me feel good too.
ame en peine 06-11-2008, 09:16 AM Whew, we had the mother of all storms here last night.. I know it pales in comparison to the ones you guys see in Kansas and Florida, but for Maine it was a whopper. I was up most of the night.. :drowsy: For the first time in my life, I heard the beeps for the Emergency Broadcast Network on the radio, but instead of following with "This is a test of the emergency broadcast network", a man started rattling off storm warnings. (ack!)
But today's beautiful - you'd never know we got tossed around last night.. As the saying here goes... If you don't like the weather in Maine, wait 5 minutes..
On a side note, my beloved blues radio station is off the air... :ohwell: and replaced with Alternative Christian Music.. :ohwell: :ohwell: .. Not that there's anything wrong with Christian music, but this stuff sounds like a bad 80's bar band is covering it.. I miss my blues...

One word..Satellite Radio!!!
That is two words..but hey...channel 72 on Sirrus....awesome stuff. Never lose the station and it never gets bumped!
myothercarisflight815 06-11-2008, 02:04 PM Good stations online, too. :)
Baileysdad 06-11-2008, 04:35 PM And depending on your cable provider...they have music stations. Blues is 931 on Cox...:) (can u tell I love the blues??)
This is what we Elders do...solve problems!!:smart:
myothercarisflight815 06-11-2008, 04:42 PM We are so solution oriented! :lol2:
ame en peine 06-11-2008, 04:59 PM OK, I think we're on to something here.. Thanks for the blues workarounds, Elders... ;)
I'm listening to a free trial of Sirius right now and love it - ch. 74 rocks.. (SRV is on now.. love him..) Then I remembered my sister subscribes to XM! (aren't they supposed to merge w/ Sirius??)
So.... if I buy a dock & play setup for my car / home I can listen to it anywhere.. I'm happy now.. Thanks for the fix.
LID - I laughed out loud at your blues song, Momma!
Went to XM now to see what their blues stations are like, and Stevie Ray Vaughn's playing there too.. He's following me today. Sharing one of my faves of his - "Life by the Drop"

myothercarisflight815 06-11-2008, 05:20 PM I have XM on my cable. Love "70's on 7."

Oh that one is easily one of my fave SRV's...I always sing along loudly with it (if I'm alone).
Speaking of blues, well this is probably more gospel, but I heard the coolest tune by the Staple Singers on the radio today...OMG, I found it on youtube!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CO5wMvrQefo (http://youtube.com/watch?v=583Xp3bAwOg)
The first thing I wondered when I heard it (other than who is it?) was how did they get that guitar effect...geetar experts, do you know?
ame en peine 06-11-2008, 05:44 PM Tabby, I'm out the door right now - no time to make sure but it sounds like the guitar and voices are being run through a phase shifter.. Great song, BTW

Cool...wonder how long I will be off reading up on phase shifters (LOL)...
I'm not a musician (past lives and future lives, probably) but I'm always interested in the technical stuff. I noticed that in the youtube comments, someone mentioned the guitar sound, but no info on the how.
100%

Most of what I've found on Pops Staple' guitar effects indicates that it's the tremelo (otherwise known as a "whammy bar") on his electric guitar, and one link also said that it's reverb, which would be done on the soundboard. Apparently there are amplifiers, also, that have tremelo effects.
tremelo (http://www.answers.com/what+is+a+whammy+bar%3F?cat=entertainment) (great link because Jimmy Page <sigh> is mentioned, but then that's not surprising)
Something the Staple family has is one thing that I love about family musicians...genetic harmonies (vocals) and the intimate soul connection that is much more rare to find amongst non-blood related musicians.
Oh and did I mention that Marty Stuart (another fine musician) worked with the Staples. I was fortunate enough to hear Marty and Mavis Staple perform together a few years ago.
I'm off to find out what kind of guitar Pops used. May Roebuck "Pops" Staple, R.I.P. (December 2000). :rip:
ame en peine 06-11-2008, 10:30 PM Tabby - I'm not much of a musician (at all), but I like the geeky tech stuff too... Now I've gone off reading about tremelos and Staple Singers...
My first thought was that a whammy bar doesn't produce such a steady, rhythmic undulation of sound. It's more like - grab the bar and bend the notes: the more you move the bar, the more you bend the notes. A really good illustration is one I've shared with you before - Jeff Beck's "Cause We've Ended As Lovers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msPiKYuuRiQ)"..
In looking up tremolos, they're essentially a phase shifter. Or rather, a phase shift oscillator produces a tremolo sound (http://www.aikenamps.com/PhaseShiftOscillators.html). The wave of sound is altered in any number of combinations to produce different sounds.. I'm familiar with these as pedals... there's a huge variety for different sounds.
In reading about the Staple Singers, it caught my eye that they performed with The Band on "The Weight" for the movie, "The Last Waltz".. I must have seen that movie 30 times.. I've always been blown away by their backup voices, and now I know who's backing them.. The Staples.
Fun music lesson, thanks!
EdMuse 06-11-2008, 11:21 PM Well, cancel the housewarming. I had the home inspection on the house I was buying. Was. We didn't have to scratch the surface too hard to find big problems. So it's pretty much back to square one now.
I'M SO STRESSED!!
ame en peine 06-12-2008, 12:21 AM Oh no, Ed... I'm so sorry! It's such an emotional investment to start attaching yourself to a home only to have it pulled out from under you. Anything I say will probably sound trite, but the upside is your inspection unveiled some issues that you'd rather find out before you're at the closing table... Sending hopes that your home will reveal itself to you very soon.
myothercarisflight815 06-12-2008, 12:33 AM I have never owned a house so I know that I can't empathize... I have however rented a house with rats and felt very stuck and helpless. The rats won. I moved. I cannot imagine being the owner of that house.
 Here's to a better place.
ficklebeechcraft 06-12-2008, 12:48 AM Hello there. You all have me listening to the Blues now... going for some Buddy Guy... whoo-hoo, love him.
Sorry to hear about your house not working out, Ed. It looked like a great place- that really stinks. Here's hoping you find something that exceeds your expectations the next time around.
I'm moving soon myself and feel like a youngster again as I am going to be moving in with a total stranger. It's an artist guy in his 40s who seems intellectual and quirky. The rent is really cheap and it's in a great neighborhood. Bit of a dump, though, and I gather that the guy likes to hold on to stuff he finds on the street on trash day. Sounds crazy, but I really have no direction anymore, after much tragedy and depression in my life. So, what the heck. My dog's very welcome and I'm only obligated for 6 months.
Yikes, MOC, I hope there are no rats where I'm headed. That sounds like it was a pleasure.
At least this will be an adventure. I was thinking of packing it up for the West Coast, where at least I have some family, but I kind of chickened out on a total drastic change. Looks like I may get a promotion at work next week, so I guess it's a good idea to stick around and beef up the resume.
Just watched exciting Top Chef finale. Thinking about what LOST episode I want to re-watch tomorrow night!!!
Baileysdad 06-12-2008, 01:11 AM The guitar thingy can be done with pedals...reverb on the amp...lots of ways....
ame en peine 06-12-2008, 09:31 AM My blues station is officially online! The Maine Blues Project (http://www.wblm.com/Article.asp?id=697906&spid=22222) . It's awesome. Waking up to "Rock Me Baby" right now..
I'm still going to get the XM thing though.. We have just a handful of radio stations (for driving) and none of them are good.
Sounds crazy, but I really have no direction anymore, after much tragedy and depression in my life. So, what the heck. My dog's very welcome and I'm only obligated for 6 months.
ficklebeechcraft... I'm so sorry to hear this. Have you talked to a professional about this? I'm not ashamed to say that I've hit some severely low points in my life and talking with a therapist to sort everything out was a lifesaver.. I'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts... Here's to hoping that this is just a temporary obstacle in your life..
I watch Top Chef too... I was thrilled with the results. Yay, first woman to win.
TabbyRasa 06-12-2008, 11:47 AM Tabby - I'm not much of a musician (at all), but I like the geeky tech stuff too... Now I've gone off reading about tremelos and Staple Singers...
My first thought was that a whammy bar doesn't produce such a steady, rhythmic undulation of sound. It's more like - grab the bar and bend the notes: the more you move the bar, the more you bend the notes.
Yes, I had those same first thoughts. But the Staple links I found mentioned tremelo...
so I went off on a whammy bar thingie. So maybe Pops did it via pedal or amplifier...I still need to know (LOL)...
A really good illustration is one I've shared with you before - Jeff Beck's "Cause We've Ended As Lovers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msPiKYuuRiQ)"..
Don't get me started again or I'll be posting Joe Satriani links... ;)
Yeah, I didn't intend to discount your phase shifter idea at all...actually I just now realized that due to my lack of knowledge on the subject, you are probably right. Like I said, I just need to know how it was done in this particular tune. ;) It's even LOST-ish: OK, the phase was shifted, but how? ;)
Did I mention that this was recorded in nineteen-frickin'-56?!?!?!? :eek2:
In reading about the Staple Singers, it caught my eye that they performed with The Band on "The Weight" for the movie, "The Last Waltz".. I must have seen that movie 30 times.. I've always been blown away by their backup voices, and now I know who's backing them.. The Staples.
I didn't know that either until now.
Baileysdad 06-12-2008, 12:57 PM Ame.....Sirius is much better...they have an all Springsteen channel....WHOOT!!!!
Only 82 at 8 a.m. Back to the streets today after five off..seems like a lifetime. Only 100 for a high today so that is good.
Bad guys beware!!!
myothercarisflight815 06-12-2008, 01:36 PM Fickle - I sencond Ame's suggestion... been there. :)
I'm sure it will take time to get where you want to be. Doesn't it for everyone? But I'm sure with baby steps, planning, and support... you will always be able to take the next step and find your way. Just take care of you and your details... try to organize your life... and over time... things will become clear. Sounds overwhelming... but one thing at a time.
Many folks here have been through rough times.
Bad guys beware!!!
Yeah, bad guys! Beat it! Shoo!

I'M SO STRESSED!!
Ed: My bad jokes are not helping? :eek2: Don't Worry Be Happy! Sending the song via thought waves right now! ;)
Ed has had to endure my bad jokes. Has anyone else got better ones?
Please post a joke and send a smile! I could use one, too!

A toad. They croak every night!
I told you they were bad!

Many folks here have been through rough times. Yup, many have. And we're all here for each other.

None. Lawyers always get their paralegals to do their dirty work!

This one is for BD!
A fellow bought a new Mercedes and was out on the interstate for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him. "There's no way they can catch a Mercedes," he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100.... Then the reality of the situation hit him. "What am I doing?" he thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license without a word and examined it and the car. "It's been a long day, this is the end of my shift and it's Friday the 13th. I don't feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven't heard before, you can go."
The guy thinks for a second and says, "Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back!"
"Have a nice weekend," said the officer.

"A lawyer falls overboard from a cruise ship in shark infested waters. As the passengers watch in horror, he is immediately encircled by sharks. Just as they expect the worst, the sharks form two lines providing a path for the man to swim back to the ship; "professional courtesy."
too2strange 06-12-2008, 04:52 PM LOL! I love these jokes! I didn't know so many people were into Law! Cool! I've worked for attorney's for years. I loved doing my part to help others! It is a great profession!

kansasgal71 06-12-2008, 08:15 PM Hello all!!! I will be heading out soon to help assist in the clean up in Chapman KS. Looks like over 3/4 of the town was destroyed in a tornado last night. I am part of a local group that assists in disaster clean up all over the state. It is a shame that the 4 boyscouts in IA were victims of this same storm. After this is all over, I promise to upload pictures to share with you. You would not believe the thing a tornado can do.... Please keep the survivors, and the families of the boyscouts in your prayers.

That was back when music was music...oh crap, I am dating myself (even though it was before my time, pretty much). Ouch, I just realized that what I said is a lyric to some song...mind is blank at the moment, and not going to rethink/research it... ;)
BD...TY for the reminder about pedals (in regards to the Pops Staple geetar sound)...I really like what one link said (eeeesh, Net slang...what is our world coming to?) about how his guitar sound is haunting, and another link said his guitar is a ghost...if I keep going on, I will have to recount the bleed-through on the early Led Zeppelin recordings...

Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-12-2008, 10:30 PM Will do kansasgal. We had one here a little over a year ago, you really can't comprehend the damage until you see it with your own eyes. What astounded me were the little things, hot wheels bikes stuck in the top of trees, one room in a home left standing--my stars. Amid all the destruction, miracles were everywhere. Keep safe and prayers to everyone!
One thing we did to help was to bring caffinated soda--everybody sends water and gatorade, which is great, but those people were thrilled to have a cold coke or diet coke!
Contest ends today. Thank you all for your votes. We received a phone call from the TV station this afternoon, but we were not home. Hopefully we will hear something tomorrow. I'm on pins and needles.....:eek2:

Me too, LiD!!! That's why I love him (the character), and the doom that he brought to the Losties...remember, it's fiction...:)
I will miss Keamy as a most powerful force, and I still think that TPTB should not have killed him off yet.
I like to be scared by the likes of Keamy (as long as I know that it's fiction, hehe).

Ladies, I got together with some old friends tonight and saw Sex & The City.. (I sent them mock sympathy cards when the series ended) Loved it.. Flat-out laughed my *** off in parts, and even shed a tear or two. If you were a fan of the series, you'd love the movie.
kansasgal- I'll keep them in my prayers.. It's wonderful that you help out..
LID - Oooooooh, I hope you win!! Please, please, please let that call be to tell you you've won. Let us know as soon as you can, OK?
CL - Hello there!
Oh, I am loving the lawyer jokes... (sis was an attorney, now a judge, so we tell them often in my family).. Here's one more for the mix..
A woman decided to treat she and her mom to a first-class cruise after spending year after year working very hard.. As they were lounging on the deck, she spotted an old classmate from high school.. She walked over to him and said hello. He was thrilled to see her.. "I haven't seen you since we graduated!", he said.. "What are you up to?".. She whispered back... "I'm an attorney now"..... "But don't tell my mother.. She still thinks I'm a prostitute"...
myothercarisflight815 06-13-2008, 12:18 AM :24: That's horrible Ame! But I think my favorte defender of the constitution had a classmate that fits that profile. blech
CrazyLatin007 06-13-2008, 12:40 AM Hi guys, I'm on vacation in NYC, and hadn't been able to catch up properly.
BD, so sorry about your friend. I hope you and his friends and family can find some peace and that something is done to remedy the situation of the returning soldiers.
Ed, it wasn't meant to be. I'm sure that's because an even better house will become available, just for you.
LID, please tell us that you won the competition!!! You're in prayers
KansasGal, I'll be praying for the tornado victims too!
Tabby, so glad to see you posting more frequently! How are you doing?
Ame, how's the home front? Did you get those workers out of your house yet?
Hope everyone is doing well. I'm enjoying NY and being away from my regular responsibility-laden life. Got a tattoo on my lower back. Dolphins frolicking in the water. So far no pain, no blood and no scabbing. It's been three days. No redness, or itching, or tenderness. Seriously, I think I have very resilient skin.
Anyway, I'll be around at nights and will be back home on Tuesday the 17th.
Hugs

Ru Paul ended his/her campaign today... Am I the only one that reads those signs as Ru Paul?
Guinevere 06-13-2008, 04:20 AM BD - Be careful out there and know you have lots of Elder prayers covering you as best we can.
Oh, Ed, I feel so bad for you but CL's right, your house is just waiting for you to find it.
Fickle - Hope your housing works out as well as you hope it will. Six months can be a long time. Sometimes when we are in flux, the best thing we can do is the next right thing until we've walked our way into a totally new and, usually, better life.
KG - I was thinking about you this week. I've been praying for the lost Boy Scouts and for their fellow Boy Scouts and parents. What a horrible thing to happen and what a testament to the lessons good Scouting can teach. My boys were never lucky enough to be in a good Scout troop but they had their dad to teach them a lot of the precepts of Scouting. Please take care while you're helping and let us know how you're doing.

I finally figured out I hate June. I've been in whiney mood and haven't been able to really put my finger on a specific problem. It just seems like everything is irritating me and I realized tonight that that's usually how I feel in June. I hate the heat and I live in TX. I'm not much better about July or August but I guess by those months I'm settled in to ride out the hot weather and blazing sunshine. So, if I'm not dancing with my tiara on, you guys will know why. They applied for Extreme Home Makeover - and lost. But their community pulled together and put up a new home for them quickly. I hope something like that happens for you.. Resisting Discouragement
by Rick Warren
So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time. Galatians 6:9
There are many things that work to keep us from completing our life-missions. Over the years, I’ve debated whether the worst enemy is procrastination or discouragement. If Satan can’t get us to put off our life missions, then he’ll try to get us to quit altogether.
The apostle Paul teaches that we need to resist discouragement: “So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up …” (Galatians 6:9 NLT).
Do you ever get tired of doing what’s right? I think we all do. Sometimes it seems easier to do the wrong thing than the right thing.
When we’re discouraged, we become ineffective. When we’re discouraged, we work against our own faith.
When I’m discouraged, I’m saying, “It can’t be done.” That’s the exact opposite of saying, “I know God can do it because he said ….”
Ask yourself these questions:
How do I handle failure?
When things don’t go my way, do I get grumpy?
When things don’t go my way, do I get frustrated?
When things don’t go my way, do I start complaining?
Do I finish what I start?
How would I rate on persistence?
If you’re discouraged, don’t give up without a fight. Nothing worthwhile ever happens without endurance and energy.
When an artist starts to create a sculpture, he has to keep chipping away. He doesn’t hit the chisel with the hammer once, and suddenly all the excess stone falls away revealing a beautiful masterpiece. He keeps hitting it and hitting it, chipping away at the stone.
And that’s true of life, too: Nothing really worthwhile ever comes easy in life. You keep hitting it and going after it, and little-by-little your life becomes a masterpiece of God’s grace.
The fact is, great people are really just ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of determination. Great people don’t know how to quit.
chellly 06-13-2008, 06:59 PM Oh LiD that sucks. I voted for you and had passed it along as other Elders had.
Thank so so much for posting what you just did. I think it will help many of us going through a rough time.
A lady that my dad dated for many years taught me something in my early 20's and I've always taken it with me....everything has a way of working out. She was right. As I look back on my life and what I'm going through now I know that everything that has happened ended up working out, even though at the time I didn't think I would ever get out of it. She also always told me, "God doesn't give you anything you can't handle."
Anyway, didn't mean to make this post about me. Just wanted you to know that we are supporting you and as much as we support you little things, like your post, helps others as well.
ETA: Don't know if anyone has seen the news, but Tim Russert passed away today. I really enjoyed watching him, especially during allllllll of the debates over the last year. Such a brilliant man. It's a great loss for everyone not just the news community.
God's tom 06-13-2008, 07:17 PM LID - I just sent prayers up for you. Here's hoping things get a lot better real soon!
Thomas :)
Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-13-2008, 07:44 PM Thanks Chelly and Tom...Your words make me sniffle--just a little bit. We are all going through difficult times, it's the human condition. I am blessed beyond what I deserve, my kids and husband are healthy, my husband is a good man and he doesn't have any awful habits, we have food and a nice house, good friends and people who love us.
I hope someone comes along to take care of the old lady.....If we didn't win, I wanted her to be blessed.
I'm sorry you are struggling Chelly, prayers going up from me to you.
Tomorrow will be a better day, time and sleep always does the trick! Also tomorrow is the birthday of both my husband and Father! We will do something fun!
Don't worry about me any more Elders, Pollyanna DeLand is pulling herself up, refusing to have a pity party and sending her husband to the store to buy a lotto ticket.

Chelly -that was beautiful..
So sad about Tim Russert. I liked him quite a bit, but then again he seemed univerally likeable. He always brought an even-keeled intelligence and twinkle of humanity and humor to his reporting. Such a shame.
God's tom 06-14-2008, 03:50 AM WOO HOO!
I had a vacation day today, & went to a double feature! It was a PERFECT night at the movies!
I saw "Incredible Hulk" & "The Happening."
Here's a link to my review:

ame en peine 06-14-2008, 09:46 AM Tom - glad you had a nice vacation day at the movies
Ed Norton's awesome.. (Favorite role of his - Primal Fear. Just incredible.) I was happy to see he took on the Hulk.. Can't wait to see him in that..
The Happening looks creeeeeeeeeeeeepy. I'm going to have to wait for:
DVD...
broad daylight...
pillow over head..
channel changer in hand..
telephone nearby having already been dialed 9-1...
for that one
Still finding popcorn behind the couch from the last bowl I flung when I went :yikes:
The Soup last night had an M. Night Shymalan Twist Ending Generator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_-vAloSSBM).. So that's how he does it... (some of his movies might have actually been helped by that thing  )
Oooh, it's so nice here today!.. I really, really want to play hooky today and drive to the coast.. grrrrrr..
myothercarisflight815 06-14-2008, 11:53 AM It is way too early for me to be watching clips of The Soup... but I just watched five of them. *giggle*

Oh, I can't wait to see "The Happening" Mark Walhberg had an interesting interview on the news last week. He sure seems to have changed from the rapper bad-boy into a serious father and husband. It is too bad Hollywood doesn't protray men and woman of integrity for our kids.
GOD's Tom: Vacation! Oh! Lucky you! Looking forward to mine, but not the gas prices. My Grandma is 96 and I thought I should see her since she may not be around much longer. It is just a LONG drive. Montana is a LONG drive to just about anywhere... except the mountains.

kansasgal71 06-15-2008, 12:55 AM LID.... I am so sorry to hear you did not win. I am sending you big hugs.
GodsTom... I spoiled myself on The Happening. I hate it when that happens. You think I would learn my lesson. I came across a very old blog about the original script and original name of the movie, and how M Knight Shyamalan shopped around for years with this script only to be turned down several times. It was a very interesting read, but the old title itself actually gave away the plot.....darn. So I will wait til it comes out on DVD to watch it.
MyOtherCar.... I love The Soup!! Do you remember the old host that had the white patch in his hair that made him look like a skunk.....

My BIL showed up and just started shaking his head and laughing.. He's more than used to us by now. (We broke him in reeeeeeeeeal good.;) )

Ditto, here! One of our neighbors will be moving at the end of July. I've organized a block party as a farewell type of thing. Any ideas Ame on some fun foods?
One family will help with the barbacue, I'm doing ice cream and someone else will host the roasting of the marshmellows! We are a tight group, I'm going to miss them.
Guinevere 06-16-2008, 01:45 PM Hey, Elders! :wavey:
LiD, I'm so sorry that your family didn't win. I prayed for you guys and voted almost every day. Thank you so much for posting the devotional. There are applicable things in it for my life as well and it was a blessing to read.
Tom, it sounds like you had a great day at the movies! It's been years since I went to a double feature. When I was a preteen and young teenager, that's how I spent most Saturdays.
Ame, I hope the carnival party went well yesterday. It sounds like a lot of fun.
I finally finished reasearching a major line in my family and was looking forward to uploading it and starting on something else for a while. I made the mistake of checking my emails though. :drowsy: Two sprigs on major family lines have been discovered and now I need to get them fleshed out before I upload. It's neverending, I tell ya! :) Oh yeah..I laid around a lot this weekend as well. Hubby had a good Father's Day. Wanted hamburgers and french fries and to watch the races. Can't get any simpler than that, huh?
Daddy Elders, I hope you all had wonderful a Father's Day.
Now, we're on to celebrating National Mortician's Day today! I didn't even know there was such a thing until I went online to send a cousin a birthday ecard. I did send oldest son and hubby ecards so that oughta do it. I'm not feeling very crafty today.

I LOVE going to a double feature!
I'd LIVE at the theater if I could!
There are still so many great movies coming out this summer...next up is 4 weeks from now - I'm hoping to go see "Hellboy 2" & "Journey to the center of the earth 3-D"...
A week after that is "The Dark Knight" & "Mama Mia"...
Two weeks later is "X files 2" & "Mummy 3".
(I might go see "Hancock" & "The love guru.")
My wife & daughter got me a whole bunch of theater gift cirtificates last Christmas, so I'm pretty much set for the summer!
I dont know if I could handle a TRIPLE FEATURE!
too2strange 06-16-2008, 03:33 PM Hey, Elders! :wavey:

Guinevere 06-16-2008, 04:29 PM Oh! Another genealogist?! Anything interesting in your tree? One of my relatives was mentioned in George Washington's Diary!
Mine too, too2. John Ashby and his wife, Jane Combs Ashby were lectured in a letter from General Washington about having loose women in the camps and providing the soldiers alcohol. Washington wroter other letters to Ashby as he was one of the top officers in the South during the RW but that one was one of the most interesting to me. I thought for a while that one of my Harrisons descended from the same Harrisons that Abraham Lincoln descended from but that's either erroneous or I haven't found the proof and it really isn't that important to me other than finding who my Harrisons came from.
Hubby is a 1st cousin, thrice removed to Lt. Col. Georga Armstrong Custer and his brother Thomas Ward Custer (the only two time Medal of Honor recipietn) as well as 1st cousin to Lt. Vincent Hobbs, RW soldier who killed the Indian Benge who had terrorized villages in the VA area.
What I've found most interesting about both sides of our families is the fact that most of our families are the "behind the scenes" people. The people who either blazed the trail in obscurity and their descendants built the communities that we now all enjoy or they were the farmers who worked generation after generation to feed not only themselves but America. Some were wealthy, some were middle class and a lot were what we would consider poor. Very few that I've found, however, were slackers. In their own mostly quiet way, they are and have been the backbone of this country without ever really considering their roles in a larger national perspective. They were the early Puritans in CT, the early Quaker or Mennonites in PA, the early Covenenter Presbyterians Scots as well as the early Baptists, Methodist and Methodist Episcopals. If I remember right, there are even a couple of Huegenots as well.
There are some scoundrels as well - one was shot & killed by Wild Bill Hickock. Several left their families and wives to go adventuring and even starting new families without ending their first marriages - stuff like that. While it may be boring and tedious to document so many people at times, I enjoy "getting to know" these parts of my family. Now that old newspapers are online and the collections grow by the day, I'm learning so many other things that flesh out these families and that makes it just that much more fun. Okay...I'm off the genealogy :soapbox:.
ame en peine 06-16-2008, 07:28 PM Tom: Don't forget Get Smart is coming out too! Can't wait for Dark Knight and Journey to Center of the Earth.. The original was such a great movie.. That and the one where the team of scientists shrink then inject themselves into a human body - loved that movie. The guy gets eaten by a white blood cell - looked like a massive cotton ball :eek2: .. They should remake that one too..
Guinevere: Fascinating stuff with the genealogy, Guinevere.. I delve into it every once in a while but haven't gone back that far! Good job. I love seeing the old census records that say what my ancesters did.. Many of them were masons who helped build New York City.. Lots of bakers (that's where I got that from  ).. Still not having any luck finding my father's father though. I've hit many brick walls.
Any ideas Ame on some fun foods? For big crowds I like making kabobs to throw on the barbecue. Chicken or beef with squash, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms.. Do some with no meat for any vegetarians. Marinade them in just about any italian or vinaigrette dressing.. Or make your own marinade with lemon juice, lime juice, garlic, fresh herbs, olive oil, salt, pepper, Worcestershire. sauce, mustard, soy sauce, and a bit of brown sugar..
Stations or bars are fun and let people get in on the action.. A BBQ bar with pulled pork, rolls, cheese, coleslaw, BBQ sauce... Chili Station with all the fixings.. Taco bars are always fun... Italian sausage with peppers and onions...
A big jug of watermelon spritzer (blend seedless watermelon until liquid.. add club soda, sprite, lime juice)
or Fresh Mint Tea - my favorite (brewed tea, crushed mint, lemon juice, sugar, honey)..
Pink Lemonade Cupcakes (http://castsugar.blogspot.com/2007/10/pink-lemonade-cupcakes.html)are fun.. This is the stuff I live for in genealogy! Finding out that an ancestor was one of builders of a town and I don't necessarily mean the big kahuna of the project. ;) In my family, besides farmers, there have been a slew of butchers - my uncle is a retired butcher/meat cutter. What's interesting to me is most of the men who had that profession didn't realize there were others in the family doing the same thing! The same holds true in my husband's families. Beside being farmer, several of them were funeral director/morticians or as they were called in the 1800s - undertakers. Hubby's grandfather was the local undertaker/grave digger mainly because he had wood working skills to make the coffins (as they were called at the time) and had the wagon to take the bodies to the cemetery. There are a lot of midwives and preachers in both Hubby's and my family as well.

Baileysdad 06-18-2008, 02:44 PM I was one of the 93,000 people at Wrestlemania 3...crazy. I was a HUGE fanboy in the day and actually got to be Mick Foley, King Kong Bundy, Superfly Snuka, and Randy Savage's escort for some shows I was running and we hired them as talent...that was way cool...
chellly 06-18-2008, 10:01 PM Oooooh wrestling!!! I used to love it when I was a kid. I was so into it when Hulk Hogan wrestled Andre the Giant and Hulk was smashed in to the corner and was supposed to be sooo injured (his ribs or something) I cried. I think I was like 10 or something so cut me some slack. ;)
When I was in Vegas a few years ago RAW was at the MGM Grand but I had no idea they were there. The next day my sister and I were in the elevator and this guy came in and she kept elbowing me. When we got out she told me that the man in the elevator with us was Rob Van Dam. Then we went to see a show in the hotel that had a bunch of impersonators and we were sitting next to Jerry "The King" Lawler. It was so funny how larger than life they look on tv and both guys really weren't all that big. Go figure. :)

Okay, I think I've heard of Hulk Hogan.. he is on kids cartoons now. Sorry, but all this wrestling talk just makes me want to tackle someone! Anyone seen Hurley?
You went to Vegas, huh? Sshh! I won't tell! ;) I hear they have rides and other stuff besides gambling. Is this true? Is it a good family place to go?
chellly 06-19-2008, 12:42 AM Vegas was a lot of fun. I did see a few rides. I don't know if it could be considered a family place. As much as the folks that handle the tourism for Vegas try to say it's a family vacation spot too, I'm not quite sure. There were lots of shows that are fun for all ages and arcades in all of the hotels. Also the MGM Grand has a Rainforest Cafe which I would highly recommend to anyone with kids. I love that place.
Let's put it this way, I have a 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 year old...wouldn't take them there. When they are older probably so. But keep in mind I say the same thing about Disney (only because I want the kids to remember the experience).
ame en peine 06-19-2008, 09:07 AM Here's an excerpt from an article originally written in 1943 by 'Transportation Magazine', as a tool for male supervisors charged with hiring *gasp* women. Wow.

1943 Guide to Hiring Women (http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/money/women-s-work-we-ve-come-a-long-way-187340/)
1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they’re less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn’t be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.
2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It’s always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.
3. General experience indicates that “husky” girls – those who are just a little on the heavy side – are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.
4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination – one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.
5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute of two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.
6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.
7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.
8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.
9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a women – it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.
10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl’s husband or father may swear vociferously, she’ll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.
11. Get enough size variety in operator’s uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can’t be stressed enough in keeping women happy.

too2strange 06-19-2008, 04:57 PM Vegas was a lot of fun.
Great advise! Thanks for answering my questions.

AME: LOL! I would never have gotten hired for so many reasons! I guess I should learn to wash my hands more often...
Baileysdad: Oh, my goodness! Please drink plenty of fluids... if there are any bad guys, chase them into a swimming pool! Cool thoughts coming your way! Since you are already cool, you really don't need them.
ame en peine 06-19-2008, 07:56 PM BD - Can't they let you wear bicycle cop shorts just for a couple of days? And change the uniform color to yellow or something? It would be cooler -and- look cheerier.. See, problem solved! This is why women should be in charge of more things.. But there's that stupid list holding us back..

Yeah, I'm thinking I'd be jobless too if this were 1943. Because the male manager who went over that list with me would have pressed charges and/or filed a civil lawsuit against me .... for shoving it up his arse...

Oh, poor you....prayers for you good officer BD! Maybe you can be one of those police officers in Orlando who wear spandex shorts (well, they DO ride bikes, but still!)
Ame--that list was a hoot. Here you're thinking that it is offensive, I think it's funny, and maybe a bit true....women do need breaks to apply lipstick:biggrin: Husky girls are better  and let's just not get in to the whole cantankerous issue!
DeLand Mom and kids are sunburned and full of sand. The girls are at lifeguard camp this week. They are learning a lot--me too. Elder daughter is having a rough time on the surfboard--they are designed for smaller children and she is very tall. The small kids just hop up on the boards, she hasn't mastered that yet! Middle daughter decided to not apply sunscreen properly this morning--she is a tomato. And my son, well..we think he got some sand up in his little winkey. It got red at the top after he had been at the beach about an hour, and it burns when he goes to the bathroom. My BIL the doc says he needs to drink lots of water to flush it out, and an antibiotic wouldn't hurt. It looks better today, but my stars, who would have thought of THIS???? Having a son is a completely unique experience.
We are exhaused and fall into bed around 9:00. I made pancakes for dinner tonight, so the kids are fat and happy. Tomorrow is competition day, so they need to get to bed even earlier than 9:00--this hasn't happened since they were babies. I hope it will be dark soon!
Bye friends, think of me burning on the beach tomorrow!
chellly 06-19-2008, 09:52 PM *passes out the sunscreen to everyone*
We won't need it here that's for sure. Been wanting to go to the pool for the last couple of days but told my son we could only go if he was good and took a nap without fighting (it's been tough getting him down lately). Of course the last 2 days he's been incredibly stubborn so no pool. I really wanted to go too.
He's 3 1/2. Is he too old for a nap? I defer to the Elders with older children and are experts at this. Some people tell me yes he is too old and some tell me no, but I can tell by looking at his little face he is exhausted. Today he had no nap and he was out like a light by 7:45....way too early for him.
Just when I thought I had gotten over a huge hurdle with the potty training this hits me. And it's just the beginning!!! Scary part is he's just like his father....HARD HEADED. When I talk to him this is how I feel: :wallbash:
Suggestions?
Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-19-2008, 10:20 PM Chelly...poor you! Babies are no walk in the park.
Are you finished with training? My daughters were pretty easy. I waited with son until he was 3-old enough to want things. I bought him a rescue hero that he wanted a lot and stuck it up on a shelf where he could see it. I told him when he had gone 3 days with no accidents, it belonged to him...training done in 2 days!
Naps, no suggestions here. I used to drive my son around in the car until he fell asleep--desperate times call for desperate measures. All three of mine stopped napping by the time they were 2. The good thing about no naps is that they all went to sleep, like clockwork at 8:00--no problems. They were knocked out--like your little guy. So you have to decide if it is better to get him to take a nap and have an hour or so in the afternoon to use for yourself, or to get him to bed at a decent hour and have the evening to yourself. Since mine did not nap anyway, I put a smile on and said at least they went to sleep early!
Bad thing about no naps is the time in the car when you are driving home from a playdate or shopping or something--4:00-5:30. You cannot let your son fall asleep in that stinking carseat. Just two minutes of sleep at this time energizes them like a cup of coffee! They are good until 10:00--no kidding!

Hey, cops in shorts! Showing off those cute legs! ;)
LMAO! I'll help your defense counselor! Who would be a woman, too!
CHELLY: YOU ARE THE BEST indicator at what your kids need.
Each child is different. I have a 15, 12, 6 and 4. The 15 year old takes nap all on his own... he is growing and needs the extra rest. At times, I wish he wouldn't, I need his help, but I don't want to wake him.
The girl, 12, goes through growth spurts and is cranky. I have her do 15 min. power naps and come back with a smile on her face or she stays in her room. Usually, she will sleep for 20-30 min and be great again. The 6 rarely needs naps, but if he didn't sleep well, he will go down for 30 min. and his attitude is so much better. The four year old is so active, that during the school year when we have to be up at 7:00 am he needs a nap by 3:00 pm or he is CRANKY the rest of the night.
My husband takes naps when ever he can get away with it! I have power naps, too. The heat seems to make everyone tired.
kansasgal71 06-19-2008, 11:44 PM I understand Chelly!!! A few hours ago my 4 year old scared the heck out of me. He was outside playing.. I came inside to check on my napping 2 year old. When I went outside, he was gone. GONE!! I freaked out. Ran all over the neighborhood. He was at the end of our culdesac with some teenager I don't know. There were in the trees and bushes. I yelled, Kody came running... said he was helping the boy find his girl.... hours later, my son is still arguing with me that he is a nice boy and will help anyone who needs his help. I just got on Amazon and bought Stranger Danger DVD.... I hope it helps.
As far as the naps go. It is up to your children if they need to nap or not. My son is almost 5 and there are days he needs a nap. Give him a nap if he is tired, as long as it does not interfere with him going to sleep at night. I stopped giving my son naps when he started having a hard time going to sleep at night.
I don't know about you... but I am fearing the teenage years...LOL

Uvajed 06-20-2008, 12:11 AM Hi everyone, We've been really busy. First, my oldest daughter needed her kitchen remodeled, so call mom. It's an old house, so, surprise, surprise, we found all kinds of goodies hiding behind the walls, floors and electric.... I made some really cute curtains. I swear, the next home we buy, I want brand new, I'm almost 50, I don't want to rip down old wallpaper or have paint that wasn't primed and the paint peals off in sheets, easier than wallpaper, or remove gross carpet, or to discover some crappy epoxy sprayed blue and orange crap that needs to be chiseled off the sub floor. I've never had a new home, what a treat that would be..... My newest house was/is 45 years old. Next, my youngest daughter needed to update her business files, accounting files and all that, so call mom. Luckily, my engineering degree kicked in and I was able to create a good system. But ..... Poor girl, she was lost with my updates, watching me create formulas was REALLY BORING..... She'll catch on. And once I show her 'forget' the formulas, she'll be fine. Then, my middle daughter is moving back to Tennessee, before her hubby's battalion return from Iraq and the "rush for housing" in October..... She found a place, so, call mom, I'm going to help her paint, and decorate, and general junk any girl would like. Her hubby is coming home in October, along with 3000 other soldiers, so she wanted to find a nice place before everyone else did. Not like last time, take the first dump that's available.
I love that my kids call me for help and advice, and I'm glad I'm not a helicopter mom, they just like me hanging around. I love watching them grow and learn, and especially, I love stepping back and watching them learn. This is something I've strived for since they were little. Luckily, Lost is over for now, and I can do all these mom things.
Hey, it's great to see everyone, and it's nice we have a new thread....
Uvajed....
Lost_in_DeLandFla 06-20-2008, 12:27 AM I understand Chelly!!! A few hours ago my 4 year old scared the heck out of me. He was outside playing.. I came inside to check on my napping 2 year old. Uh oh....bad scenario. You must have been out of your mind with panic!! If this teenager is not a good kid, and your son is not listening, this could be a bad situation.
Here is what I did about this one. My eldest walked (ran, flew) off all the time--her most famous, she ran in to Blockbuster in front of me and disappeared. I had a 2 year old and an infant in my arms...she knew this. She left the store as I was screaming frantically for her, ran down several stores in a strip center and went into a grocery store. Some nice lady in Blockbuster told me she had seen a little girl running out towards the grocery store. I flew into the store to find my little tiny daughter pushing a shopping cart around throwing groceries inside......:eek2: :eek2: When I told her for the umpteenth time about bad strangers, she told me she was strong and could hit them and run away.
Solution. I called the police dept. told them what she was doing. I told them I wanted them to scare some sense into her...as she was not listening to me. I hooked up with a great police officer who does programs with children. She took us into the station, picked up my daughter, put her under her arm and told her to do whatever she could to get away, hit, kick, punch, whatever. My daughter tried, could not get away. The officer was very sweet, but also talked sense into her. It worked. Good luck with your son, and have a nice glass of wine!
HI Uvajed! Nice to see you back lassie.
I',mFeeling a little fluffy tonight Ame--I just slammed a handful of fritos--I'm craving salt.
100%
I want to go to sleep...instead I'm making cookies for tomorrow. We have to bring something to the end of camp competition--they provide hotdogs and hamburgers. Just once I want to be the Mom who brings a bag of chips or Oreos.....:drowsy:
myothercarisflight815 06-20-2008, 02:49 AM Regarding Naps - I had my daughter have a "quiet resting time." She had to be either laying quietly on the couch or quietly in her bed... she could read or play quietly. At that point... I didn't care if she slept... but it had to be "like" a nap time.
ame en peine 06-20-2008, 09:11 AM Have to run, busy weekend at work.. there will be a line out the door this morning (a good thing).. I'll catch up with everyone later..
Uvajed - good to see you!
LID - Your "fluffy" treat was Fritos last night? Mine was fig newtons.. It says "Serving Size: 2" on the package.... They're talking sleeves, right? :rotflmao2: (cause really, one is more than enough ;) )
I can't take the gas prices anymore. This is nuts. Filled up my wagon yesterday and kept wanting to stop the nozzle at $35... Nope.. $40.... Nope... $45... Higher.. Wow.
chellly 06-20-2008, 09:24 AM Thanks for all the nap advice! There are days that we do the quiet time instead so I think I'm going to just stick with that instead of fighting so hard to get him to take a nap. If he needs one he'll take it. Last night with him going to sleep so early it was a bit of a help to me since I do most of my school work at night when the kids are in bed. If they go to bed earlier that means I can start earlier and go to bed much earlier!
Potty training...I thought we'd never get him trained. We finally resorted to bribery and had him run around pantless for a day. Sounds weird I know, but he didn't grasp that going potty in his underpants was the same as going potty w/no pants on. My other 1/2 said to try it so we did and it worked. Trained in 1 day! My sister thought we were crazy.
Bribery - He came in the room when we were watching Transformers one day and has been fascinated with Bumblebee ever since. We found a little remote control Camaro at Walmart that looked just like Bumblebee and told him if he went potty for a week he could get it. Between that and the no pants he only had 1 accident all week and that our first trip out to the grocery store with no pullups.
kansasgal71 06-20-2008, 11:51 AM LID... what a great idea. Fortunately, or unfortunately... we have become familiar with quite a few police officers. We have a house in our culdesac that has a bunch of teenangers... they fly up and down the street, radios booming at all hours of the night, too many parties to count. But the police are always so wonderful to come out and stop it... a few times they have stopped and talked to us... even let my son get in the car and turn on the sirens and lights. I have his card, I think I will be giving him a call and see what we can come up with. Thanks so much for such an awesome idea. I bought the DVD but really wonder if my son would even pay attention to it.
After yesterdays episode, I got online to the new link for predators. Found out we have quite a few in our area. How scary. I got to looking around, there does not seem to be any place to live that would not have someone within blocks of you.
I wish our children could have the experiences we had growing up. Being able to wake up |
