I started a new thread to just chit chat about music, no rules!

So, what kind of music do you like JerseyGirl? I'm into Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Country, and some Classic (Tchaikosvky rocks!)

On the subject of music, being broke sucks. Cinderella, Quiet Riot, Firehouse and Ratt are coming to Savannah and I don't have a penny to my name! :(

I like pretty much anything except Rap and Heavy Metal.
It depends on my mood. *You would be surprised by the combination
of concert ticket stubs in my collection.

Speaking of Rob Thomas, fanofangel, I liked his vocal with Santana on "Smooth"!

I don't like rap either. I think the lyrics are womanizing.

That was an awesome song! Gotta listen to it again sometime.

I already said that in the rock music thread: I like almost all genres of music although my major favs all belong into rock. To name some of my fav bands and artists:
Rolling Stones, Beatles, Doors, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, U2, Johnny Lang, Dire Straits, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Guns 'n' Roses, Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Evanescence, Blackmore's Night, Loreena McKennitt, Josh Groban, Oysterband aaaaand Runrig! *g*

Hey and that was even kind of chronological and divided into genres.

If any of you guys like folk rock, check out Oysterband. They're just awesome! They do traditional british folk combined with many other elements. I went to a concert in a small hall near my town (they play at bigger festivals in the UK, but in Germany it's mostly small concerts), and I have to say it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The audience was great, such a great mood and lots of good vibrations *g* It was just plain fun. Me and my girlfriends even got to meet them after the concert because they just left the stage and mingled with the fans. So we ended up sitting "backstage" with them and some of the guys who worked at the location, singing songs and having fun.
I found out I tend to prefer the not so famous bands to really famous ones because they just seem to have a different kind of passion for what they're doing. They just make the kind of music THEY like, and they do it because they're having fun doing it, not because they want to earn lots and lots of money.
I can't wait to go to their next concert, but that unfortunately won't be until next year I guess.

OK, before work starts, here's a taste of my music collection...

In college I did a soul and funk radio show, so I have a lot of soul (Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Stax/Volt box set, Otis Redding, etc)

I grew up on classic rock so I like Ozzy Osborn, ACDC, Beatles, Stones, Kiss, David Bowie, etc

I went through the pre-teen pop faze with Duran Duran as my favorite band, but got into alternative rock and punk in high school...The Cure, The Smiths, Janes Addiction (my all time favorite band ever), 10,000 Maniacs, The Pogues, Sex Pistols, Dead Milkmen, etc.

In college grunge was big and I got into some more hard core punk ...Fear, Dead Kennedys, Nirvana, STP, Soundgarden, etc.

For folk music I like Ani Difranco, Joan Biez (sp?), etc.

I like "different" music for example Frank Zappa, Tom Waits (hence my user name Jersey Girl), They Might Be Giants, Ween, Barenaked Ladies, etc. (I was into BNL back in college and got to see then play at many small clubs before they got big. They put on the best show.)

For rap I like the old school stuff like Run DMC and all the early stuff and the newer stuff like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, etc. I don't care for much of the gangsta rap.

Anyway, my music collection is not as big as I would like and I lost some of my old stuff because I didn't upgrade from vinyl. I pretty much like everything (except most country music). I go to Ozzfest every year and last year I went to the Lincoln Park concert too, but I was too wasted by the time they came on, so I missed them.

For classical I like Beethoven, Handel (Messiah), Tchaikosvky, Mozart, Verdi, etc.

Oh, and I love musicals too, especially the new ones like Rent.

Me too. I like to see original music and I like to see bands in the smaller clubs. I just get sad when I see BNL now, because I can't stand right up next to the stage anymore. I like to see local bands here in Philly and I saw this great show recently with Bobby Bare Jr. He's hysterical and I highly recommend seeing him if he comes to your town.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Snoop Dogg is gangsta rap. Well he's not anymore, now he does pop rap. :P

What do you like? Old Snoop or New Snoop? I can't stand new Snoop... pretty much cuz pop rap might be some of the worst music ever released.

PhillyGirl2873

Well, I don't care for all gangsta rap, but I do like some of it. The songs that were in Office Space were funny/good and I do like old and new snopp, so I should clarify my statement.

Armenian Jedi- I don't like it because it seems the lyrics typically only value a woman's chest or butt, instead of their intellect. Women are more than just bodies.

I dont know if you have the CD or not but if you dont I HIGHLY recommend you go out and buy it

um most of the songs aren't even about women. sorry.

And when they are... I'm sorry to say, but they're MEN. How many men you know who value a girls intellect? Those are the guys that never get laid. :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

A.J. :

1. I'm not going to dignify that post with a good come-back.
2. This thread was created, in part, to avoid posting in your "Rock" thread.
At least that is why I discuss music here now!
I may be mistaken on that second point.
If so, let me know JerseyGirl !

lol, I actually opened this thread to apologise to JerseyGirl for derailing it. :P

But let's not debate in here. you're right, this thread is to talk about music not to debate about it. Or at least this is what I assume.

I started this thread because Leandra and I wanted to discuss music and we didn't want to take over AJ's thread. This is just a place to chat about music. I don't care what people chat about, just try to be nice to each other and respect each other's opinions. :)

I like a big variety of music usually. It depends on my mood or what Im doing. Not a country or really heavy metal fan. Or at least the really twangy country.. oh, and the emo music. I cant stand it. It's too whiney for me.

I love classic rock tho. I could listen to ACDC endlessly... and Billy Joel.. the man is wonderful. journey rocks as well... and of course aerosmith. Also, I just got Rob Thomas's new cd, and I love it. I really need to go to more concerts. Maybe they should just have another woodstock.. that was fun...

You guys just have a brilliant taste in music, JerseyGirl and pug :) I like most of the stuff you mentioned very much, myself.

JerseyGirl, you also mentioned Ella Fitzgerald in the other thread, or am I mistaken? Do you have any clue in which year "At Last" was recorded?

I also sometimes like classical music, Beethoven e.g., but what I like even more are movie soundtracks, LOTR e.g. or Dragonheart... some James Horner stuff is great too, like Braveheart, but I think later on he started copying himself and it got kind of boring. Whom I also like very much is Klaus Badelt, although his style is kinda similar to Hans Zimmer, but then again I like Zimmer ;)

And wow... Billy Joel is cool too. The concert must have been awesome.

Hmm, not sure when that was recorded. I only have a best of album of hers. I'll have to remember and check when I get home. I love that song though.

Billy Joel was a great show. That was back in 1989 or 90? I'm showing my age.
