View Full Version : new bands
driveshaft_fan 09-21-2005, 09:05 AM i am a HUGE music nerd. i love finding new bands to listen to...so i was just wondering what everyone here listens to? Maybe this can be a thread for people to check out new bands and whatnot.
Personally for me, I like more of the indie rock...even though I will listen to almost anything you throw my way.
My favorites:
Ludo - they are a band from St. Louis that are starting to blow up everywhere. i HIGHLY recommend checking them out at www.ludorock.com (http://www.ludorock.com) They have a new EP coming out next week that is a rock opera. it is AMAZING!
The Dog & Everything
Jack's Mannequin
Motion City Soundtrack
Damien Rice
Matchbook Romance
Oasis
Rushmore Academy
The Killers
Ambulance LTD
So...what is everyone else into?
liz_lost_fan 09-21-2005, 09:18 AM I like country like Tim McGraw, and Toby Kieth
I also liek System of a Down, and Metallica
but by far, the best group ever is the Beatles, hands down, nothing is, was, or ever will be as good as them :D

bearsgonefishin 09-21-2005, 10:44 AM These guys arnt new but they rock and they arnt mainstream so most people havent heard of them but check out Widespread Panic first and foremost.
also Galactic, Karl Denson Tiny Universe, Soulive, Moe, I could go on and on, Check out all the bands that play at Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Mars Volta are different, you may dig em, there is something for everyone there, if you've never been its a once in a lifetime experience.
Watership Down 09-21-2005, 11:08 AM How does everyone keep up with the latest in music? Word of mouth? Sites like Napster? Satellite radio? Message boards? It's difficult getting good info on new bands whose music is worth the price of a CD. Remember the days when MTV was more M and less TV?
BTW...
I agree with you guys about the Beatles. No one can touch them.
driveshaft_fan 09-21-2005, 12:24 PM Widespread Panic...great band! and the mars volta...they are a little out there for me...but my friends love them.
i hear about new bands through the other bands i like. meaning who they tour with, who else is on their record label, who else they are friends with...that sort of thing. another thing is festivals...warped tour, austin city limits, bonaroo, voodoo fest...chances are if you like one band playing..then you will like several.
also....purevolume or myspace is really great at finding new stuff. i use that all the time.
oh! another great band...lucky boys confusion
sawyergirl2 09-21-2005, 12:41 PM It's always great to check out local bands in your area, you never know what you'll find and who you'll really like. And there are always a ton of tours that go on thru the summer, at least in the US, that go all over and those feature usually multiple bands and whatnot. Man I wanted to go to Warped but vacation got in the way:ohwell:

it was a good show this year. i ended up going to two, st. louis and kansas city. i saw some great people! now i cant wait for next year!
bearsgonefishin 09-21-2005, 02:59 PM check out Stockholm Syndrome- their debut album is called Holy Happy Hour, its great, its one of top 10 favorites and thats saying alot. its Jerry Joseph on guitar and vocals, David Schools on Bass and vocals, Eric Mcfadden- lead and mandolin; a drummer (wally ingrem, i think) and keys. Incredible!!! go to www.stockholmsyndromeband.com. You can sample some of their music on the site.
Orinthiya 09-22-2005, 10:00 PM Bands that aren't new but still unappreciated:
Ringside
Starflyer 59
Eisley
The Bravery
to name a few.
anderton 09-25-2005, 08:10 PM My favorite band of all-time, no contest, hands down - Guided By Voices. Robert Pollard recently disbanded GBV, but he's still going to record and tour solo, and he's the genius behind the band, 100% (except for the period where Tobin Sprout co-wrote songs, who is also a great songwriter in his own right).
I'm also a big fan of Todd Rundgren, Neil Young, the Kinks, R.E.M., Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, Tom Waits... the classics.
"Newer" bands I'm into? ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, most definitely. I dig Deerhoof, The White Stripes... I think the new Sleater-Kinney album is spectacular. I was really into McLusky, but they broke up last year, sadly.
addicted2josh 10-15-2005, 03:15 PM Hedley! They are THE BEST BAND EVER (besides the beatles, they rule all) They're from Canada so if you're in the States it might be hard to find their music. But look hard because it's worth it!!!

mygoodeye 02-23-2006, 08:30 AM i dont listen to many new bands either, bands these days lack alot of things (talent, balls, drugs:rolleyes: )
one band thats fairly new is Mastodon, theyre prog-metal. oh, and if youre into slightly camp, Iron Maiden-esque thrash then i highly reccomend Dragonforce
youve got good taste Mr. Warlock, Joy Division are my second favourite band (after Nirvana)
lostislife 02-25-2006, 01:14 AM Check out the band, Arctic Monkeys!!!! There a fairly newer band. I love the song "I bet you look good on the Dance Floor"

Weezer
trublu06 02-25-2006, 03:24 PM Check out the band, Arctic Monkeys!!!! There a fairly newer band. I love the song "I bet you look good on the Dance Floor"
I agree totally. Loving their new album "Whatever People say i am thats what i'm not". They are a band created totally out of internet buzz and for anyone who has never heard them they release their songs free on the internet highly recommended.
Also love Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers and my guilty pleasure Kanye West.
penyours 03-01-2006, 02:25 AM I just went to an really good Belle and Sebastian concert, so I'm listening to a lot of their bootlegs right now. They're definitely not new, but that concert gave me hope that they're not too old and wash up and that they will still put out quality material!

now theres a name i havent heard in along time...i had one of their albums when i was a fey indie kid, i think it was Tigermilk. good band, proof the UK used to produce decent bands
EarlhamGirl 03-01-2006, 11:09 AM I like alot of music too, but i have recently started to like alot of newer bands and artists. I really like Alexi Murdoch (Orange Sky is always #1 on my Top 25), Seven foot Wave (Catalina is the best!), and Hellogoodbye.
I really liked Hellogoodbye when i first heard them on the real world, but unfortunately i have not been able to find alot of their music. If you guys have any clue where i could get some music from Hellogoodbye it would be very much appreciated!
lostislife 03-01-2006, 08:08 PM there's some hellogoodbye music on myspace.com

Part of the reason I really enjoyed the concert was that they played quite a few selections from Tigermilk! Oh but if you ever decide to check their lastest LP, you should know that the new songs sound really great live but are not as impressive on the CD.
mygoodeye 03-02-2006, 12:12 PM yeah i'll try and check out the new album, if i can find it, theyre still a little obscure:smile:
i recommend Mogwai's latest album too, Mr Beast

Mogwai! Now that's a name that I haven't heard in ages. I have to give it a listen. And about B&S really? they're obscure in Manchester? I wouldn't have guessed that. Over here in Canada, you could always find their stuff in both indie shops and major retailers and these days they seem to be getting bigger.
MellowTurtle 03-03-2006, 03:10 PM I like a lot of Christian rock music such as:
Bleach
Number One Gun
Sanctus Real
Kutless
House Of Heroes
Last Tuesday
The Myriad
Stellar Kart
Audio Adrenaline
and many more.

well actually to be honest you could find thir albums easily in indie shops in Manchester, but i hardly buy CDs these days, so im a bit out the loop:smile:
i *aquired* the new Belle & Sebastian, ive only listened to it once but i liked what i heard, i also *aquired* some of their older albums, and some Modest Mouse which i havent heard in ages. i think im regressing back to indie kid (old skool indie however, was never into this new fangled haircut stuff)
Michaud 05-10-2006, 05:37 PM Aphex Twin
Got to love the master of Wrong. He's provided me with some of my favourite nights out.
I listen to all sorts, but my newest find was a band called 'Editors' from the UK. They're not exactly new, but their first release under that name was January '05, and I know their album The Back Room was only released in March '06 in the States. I'm going to be seeing them at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston while on holiday in July!
Aside from that I find a lot of good stuff on places like MySpace
Ferrel 05-10-2006, 05:57 PM Check out Wolfmother, a new Aussie band. The single I'm hearing up here in Toronto, is Woman. I checked out their CD and it rocks. Old school style. Deep Purple, Zep, Uriah Heep, just to name a few comparisons.
stoo303 05-12-2006, 11:19 AM My favorite new band of the moment is definitely The Walkmen. Their third album, "A Hundred Miles Off," is coming out at the end of the month and it is really, really good. Their best yet.
Check out their Myspace: http://myspace.com/thewalkmen
Also, Mobius Band is super rad. They're a blend of indie rock and a bunch of electronic stuff. Almost falling in the middle ground between The Postal Service and old Death Cab.
They have a Myspace page, too: http://myspace.com/mobiusband
