View Full Version : If you had to take three books to a desert isle, what would they be?
Mr. Find 10-16-2005, 03:31 AM "If you had to take three books to a desert isle, what would they be?" Before you answer, take a look at this interesting coversation overheard in the Dunder Mifflin parking lot:
PHYLLIS: The deVinci Code
ANGELA: The deVinci Code. I would take The deVinci Code, so I could burn The deVinci Code.
DWIGHT: Okay great. That's gonna keep you warm for like seven seconds. Question, is there firewood on the Island?
JIM: I guess.
DWIGHT: Then I would bring an axe. No books.
JIM: It has to be a book, Dwight.
DWIGHT: Fine. Physicians Desk Reference.
JIM: Nice. Smart
DWIGHT: Hollowed out. Inside, water-proof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protien bars, massive blanket and... Can I take away Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. No, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azazkerban. Question, did my shoes come off in the plane crash?
kitten_kath 10-16-2005, 08:51 AM Great Expectations.
Jane Eyre.
Latest Harry Potter Book. (I am so shallow, LOL.)

Right on!!!
Mr. Find 10-16-2005, 12:20 PM I should really credit the snippet of dialogue in the original post. It is from the TV series, The Office, on NBC. Some of the episodes are mediocre, but about a third of the time they are so side-splitting funny you won't want to erase (if you are a taper or DVR user).
"...did my shoes come off in the plane crash?" I suspect Dwight may be a John Locke fan.

Kristina 10-17-2005, 03:23 AM One really thick book, with lots of sides in it that could be used to start a fire (something like an encyclopedia)
A book about plants, wildlife and nature on the island (preferably someone who´s dealing with monsters/giant birds as well as giving helpful advices regarding what plants not to eat and when monsoon season is coming) ;)
A complicated book, preferably on old English (takes longer to get through), with few words on either side (so one can use it as diary as well)....
If I´m th chose from what´s on my shelf I´d take LOTR, my one volume encyclopedia and probably Jane Austen's collected work.....
rabbit in your headlights 10-17-2005, 03:31 AM For entertainment purposes, I would bring these three.
Godel, Escher and Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid - Douglas Hofstadter
The Brothers Karamazov - Fydor Dostoevsky

Otherwise, I would probably bring an encyclopedia or some sort of wilderness survival guide to assist me in my struggle for survival...

If I were alone on the island, I'd use it to survive.
If I wasn't alone, it would be hollowed out and have all the harry potter books inside. That way everyone would get all excited and then....Harry Potter.

herbgirl 10-24-2005, 11:55 AM Tough to answer. I have an extremely large home library that takes up an entire room of my house, and there still isn't room for everything. If I knew I was going there ahead of time, I would assume that I would be there for quite a while, so I would want to take a wide range of things to keep me content. And since I'm answering the question, I'll go ahead and set my own conditions and assume that since I'm on a Lost board, it will be a Lost-type situation, and I wasn't the only one to crash, and that I can borrow books from other people. So I'm not going to want to bring something that other people would be likely to have.
1) The Lucifer Principle by Howard Bloom. (For sociological, psychological reasons)
2) The Complete and Unabridged Works of Shakespeare. (for enjoyment. I don't think anyone else would have it because of its size)
