i've never watched the show, but for those of you that do, it looks like FOX has finally given the show the axe:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051111/tv_nm/leisure_arrested_dc_1

Fox pulls 'Arrested Development' for November sweeps
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In a move that will likely spell the end of a TV show that critics love but never drew big audiences, the Fox network said on Friday it pulled offbeat comedy "Arrested Development" from its schedule for the rest of the month. Fox plans to air reruns of its popular new jailhouse drama "Prison Break" in place of "Arrested Development" through the end of November "sweeps," when networks go all-out to boost their ratings for the sake of local TV stations' ad sales.

Removing a struggling show during sweeps, while falling short of outright cancellation, is usually a sure sign a network has given up hope on a series. In addition, Fox, a unit of News Corp. Ltd., said it had cut back its production order for "Arrested Development" to 13 episodes from 22 episodes for the season. A network spokesman said the show would return to prime time in December but the show's future beyond that had not been decided. Insiders at the network and its sister production studio, 20th Century Fox Television, said it was doubtful the series would be renewed for a fourth season next year.

"It probably does spell the end of the show," one source told Reuters. The comedy, starring Jason Bateman as a widower struggling to manage the affairs of his dysfunctional family after his father, played by Jeffrey Tambor, lands in prison, has been a darling of TV critics since its launch in 2003.

Despite winning an Emmy Award as best comedy last fall, the show has continued to flounder in the ratings, averaging a meager 4.2 million viewers through the five original episodes that have aired this season. "There was a very loyal and passionate audience that unfortunately never did grow," studio spokesman Chris Alexander said.

Along with "Arrested Development," Fox also is taking freshman comedy "Kitchen Confidential" off the air for the remaining three Mondays of the November sweep. Elsewhere in prime time, the WB network said on Friday that one of its top shows, family drama "7th Heaven," will end its 10-year run in May in what one source said was a decision determined in large part by economics.

The show, which averages 5.1 million viewers, will leave the airwaves as the longest-running family drama in U.S. TV history, outpacing two hit series from the 1970s and '80s, "The Waltons" and "Little House on the Prairie," the Time Warner Inc.-controlled network said. Rising production costs for the ensemble drama and the fact that "7th Heaven" was up for renegotiation with producers and cast members contributed to the WB's decision not to renew the series for an 11th season, a person close to the program said.

I thought it was interesting when they won an Emmy, that the Producer? that accepted the award mentioned that no one watches their show.

I like it, but I don't even know what timeslot or day it plays on, so it's hit or miss if I see it.

1/2 hour shows are so easily overlooked when you can choose an hour show. What I mean is, if you don't care for what's on the second 1/2 hour, the one hour show wins.

Eg: That new show Earl is excellent, but I can take or leave The Office, so I've missed a few eppies of the Earl show.

I'm with ya, silveranswer. AD was my next favorite show after LOST. It saddens me that a show as great as AD could get overlooked simply because it requires the viewer to keep up with what's going on. GOOD BYE AD!!! YOU WILL BE MISSED !!

Well, it looks like now I'll have to replace AD with The Office. The shows are very similar in format, and The Office just got picked up for a full season. LONG LIVE THE OFFICE !!

That show has a strange cult following to it. Kinda like Firefly did when it was on the air. Unfortunately it looks like this shows fate is the same as Firefly. Maybe they will make a AD movie?

One of the biggest problems I see with Arrested Development is no commericals. Otherwise of the word of mouth press this show doesnt even exist... I mean compare the show to Reno 911. Those shows would appeal to the same audience basicly, but AD is a much much better show from what I've seen. However Reno is getting picked up because more people watch it. And thats due to commercials. Your show cant get watched if nobody knows it exists.

Oh and Tropicanacabana. Your little avatar is funny.

NO FAIR!!! I HATE YOU!

yeah, Arrested Development and Lost are similar in that paying attention to details pays off. They make references to things from previous shows all the time- back to ep 1. It's the most hilarious and funny show ever. I just HOPE that some cable channel picks it up so they keep making it- even if I'd have to wait for it to come out on DVD to see it!

Here's an article about it: http://comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=11947

AD is one of 3 shows I go out of my to watch on TV (LOST and Alias are the other two). I am in denial about the whole thing and I plan to stay in denial until the miracle comes and uncancels the show. Seriously funniest show on TV. I will never watch a new show on Fox again because what's the point, if it is half good it will get cancelled. The only things I ever watch on it now (other than the last AD's of course) is the Simpsons and King of the Hill. I am happy that Fox gave them a chance and this one isn't really Fox's fault, because they did give it 2 years and then some to find it's audience. It's a shame it didn't make a hundred episodes because I think it would kill in syndication. Oh well we will end up with 53 of the greatest episodes to ever grace the world of comedy TV.

I'm with you, Midnighter. I'm heartbroken. This is such a smart, unique, hilarious show, I just crack up every time I watch it. I will NOT watch another Fox show EVER. But as aggravated as I am with Fox, I am even more angry with the general public for not getting this awesome show! Are we really so lazy that we need a laugh track to tell us when a joke is being told? Can we not THINK on our own to get a joke? AAUUGGHH!

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

I love AD.It is one of only 4 shows I actually watch on television.Fox did a terrible job of promoting the show. I have to put sticky notes on the TV to remind me when it's on because they kept changing it on the schedule. It has been fun and I will enjoy the DVDs

However, I have never been so happy to hear that 7th Heaven is ending in May...thank the Lord - no pun intended haha :p

I’m not worried. FOX cancelled Family Guy a few years due to poor ratings and lousy marketing and advertising and look how that turned out.

As for The Simpsons, I love the show, but I think if it wasn’t for them putting FOX on the map as a big network, they would’ve cancelled it long ago.

Does this definitely mean it's gone? I remember hearing something similar a few months ago when they weren't going to bring it back for a third series or something. I dunno. I really hope they do bring it back, it's one of the smartest sitcoms on TV at the moment.

I LOVE this show!!!! I Tivo it and have to watch it a couple of times to catch all the subtle jokes. I guess they do need obvious mindless jokes and a huge laugh tracks so the masses will know when something is funny.

I keep holding out hope that maybe they might move it to Fx where the ratings standards are a little lower- but unlikely. *bawls in agony again :crybaby: *

I never got into AD, but Fox cancels alot of shows. I was angered when they axed "Firefly"

As a person on another board put, Fox can't promote non-animated shows. Really, the only long-running shows on Fox

I)X-Files-good, until the movie. Once they did the movie, it started to slide, once Dogget was brought in after Mulder's abduction, it died totally
II)The Simpsons-good, until roughly Season 9 or 10
III)American Idol-yeah, this is grabage

I love AD and I'm so upset that is going. I feel that fox didnt do enough to promote it and get it out there for the masses to see. If they focused more on AD and less on all thier crappy reality tv shows.... GRRRR. I'm so sick of all the reality crap they have. I do not care about these ppl's lives. I watch tv to be amused and what not. My reality tv is the news. Thanks. So, boo to fox for getting rid of AD.

I hope that some other cabel network picks it up. Perhaps FX.. I love that channel.

silveranswer
11-14-2005, 03:44 PM
They seriously need to bring back Scrubs ASAP. I read that they ordered 24 episodes for this season, so if they save it for January there won't be any re-runs!!

I know that Fox's marketing of Arrested sucked, but I still don't understand how it did so badly. It's SO FUNNY! I would think people would have been curious to see what all the fuss was about.
. . .and I know there's another thread about this somewhere, but I totally had a crush on Jason Bateman when I was younger and he's so good on this show it's ridiculous!

Finally!

I remember watching a few episodes back in like Jr. High School and I thought it was pretty lame then, but that guy, Barry Watson, was pretty hot. Anyway, I have not seen an episode since except one day maybe last year or so I was surfing the net and saw that they had a "musical" episode and you could download a little clip so I did because I had to see this, and it was the worst thing I have ever witnessed. I am surprised that alone did not cancel the series. I hate that show and I can't even imagine what is going on with it these days.

Might 'Arrested Development' be saved?

Fox may have given up on Arrested Development (and, to be fair, they hung in there a lot longer than the ratings warranted, Emmys or no Emmys), but might another outlet pick it up? The San Francisco Chronicle reports a rumor that Showtime could rescue the series, perhaps pairing it with Weeds.
Would that work for you, PopWatchers? Or do you have better ideas for how to prop up the Bluths' banana stand?

And Fox just stinks. Gee, if you don't promote a show, or market it, and no one watches it, it's obviously THE SHOW's FAULT! Idiots.

I guess I will have to be happy with the Office and Lost and CSI.

Tonight could be the end of the second most addictive show on TV, with the final 4 eps airing in an hour and 40 minutes. If Showtime doesn't get it, this is the end.
AD is kinda like Lost, in that you have to watch every second carefully for jokes and added material that enriches an episode, like with Lost. Maybe if AD had the Bluths go on an island and be attacked by black smoke, they could have lasted longer.
