Just read a great review, and the trailers are fab too, can't wait to see it, though
the reviewer of our newspaper said Jack Black was not the right one for the role
he played, but the rest of the movie was truly spectacular! I'll have to see for myself!

just got back from King Kong... it was very good... Naomi Watts was excellent as Ann, and Jack Black displayed a nice performance... it was weird seeing Jack in a more serious role, but he did well... a lot of good action, and the scenes between Kong and Ann made you really believe that they cared for one another... it honestly didn't feel like 3 hours... i can't see how they could've made it less than 3 hours and still made us care for everyone and Kong... just a brilliant re-make... Peter Jackson is KING

we all know Kong dies and PJ and Co. pulled it off tremendously... very sad and emotionally charged... very touching scenes between Ann and Kong when they look at the sunset on those 2 occassions and at the scene on the ice... the humor between both of them was cute...

ETA: for previews, we had X3, Mission Impossible 3, Miami Vice, and The Da Vinci Code...

Just came back from seeing the film...

I thought it was amazing!!! I have to admit that when I first heard that Peter Jackson was doing King Kong, I was a little worried. I wondered if the film would translate well...and it had the potential for disaster. Not that he isn't a brilliant filmaker, but a film about a giant ape is either going to be great...or it's going to be horrific ;). But then the rave reviews started coming in and I was incredibly excited. And this film is everything they claimed it was! It was surprisingly emotional...not to mentioned thrilling and riveting...lol. I screamed at parts...and I actually cried a little as well.

Peter Jackson is an incredible director and I reccomend it to anyone! I'm so pleased he followed LOTR up with something that proves he's here to stay!

OK, just some questions for people who have seen all 3 versions...

1) Was Kong more animal like (as in the original version) or more sympathetic (70's version). My brother and I were talking about the old ones last night and he commented that the original King Kong killed a lot more people biting them, throwing them stomping on them, etc (not to be mean, but just being an animal) He said the 70's Kong was a lot more of a sympathetic character. It's been so long since I've seen either version. I remember as a kid always feeling bad for him. Thankfully I Tivoed the original King Kong this weekend, so I can watch it before seeing the new movie.

2) If you've seen all 3, which one is the best and why?

OK, not a question, but if you are a fan of PJ, you must see Dead Alive. I saw this movie in college and absolutely loved it. It was my first introduction to PJ and I think it was one of the first films he made. Anyway it is a campy, bloody horror movie and it is the best. I think it may be the bloodiest movie ever made. It's kind of on the same par as the Evil Dead movies, not scary at all.

I have not seen the 30's version, but I have seen the 70's version. I can say that people I know, as well as the media, have said that PJ stayed true to the original movie.
Kong is more ferocious in this version, he is quite frightening at first.. he does kill quite a few but we rarely see much blood, its definately not a blood bath... even in the end when Kong dies we only see a tiny bit of blood for a second. The fighting scenes with the dinosaurs were long, detailed, and very dramatic and they make you want to stand up and cheer for Kong (some people were doing just that in the theater). lol
The visual effects are amazing and I would recommend the movie for that reason alone.
I dont hate the 70's version, I actually have enjoyed it for many years now, but I think this one definately tops the 76 version. The cast was great, Naomi Watts IMO was much better than Jessica Lange. She seemed to have more heart. Jessica's character just seemed kind of airheaded and fake to me.

Jessica's character just seemed kind of airheaded and fake to me.

That was my biggest complaint with the 70s movie as well.

We are having a 'winter storm' so I probably won't get to see it until this week-end.

I hated the 70s version! They tried to update it & change the story, & in the end - Kong
didn't look real! I'm looking forward to this one - probably wont get to see it 'till Sunday.

The best one is the original. Because...it's the original.

It was ground breaking in many ways and opened the doors for fantasy movies.

To answer your first question:

Kong is a full-on gorilla in this one. They did their homework and got a bunch of actual behavior that is depicted in the film (think Koko). He is much more sympathetic in this movie because CGI allows more emotion on his face and in his posture.

This movie is great by itself but will always be a companion piece to the original 1933 King Kong.

I'm going to see it again this weekend. I know it will not replace the original, I was just saying IMO that it is better than the 70's version.

For anyone going to see it this weekend, a couple things to watch for.. Andy Sirkis, Gollum from LoTR, plays the cook on the ship- the guy with the squinty eye. He also did the CGI movements for Kong just as he did for Gollum.
Colin Hanks, he's the guy with the funky wire frame glasses, plays one of Jack Black's characters' friends/advisors. He also starred with Jack Black in Orange County.

liked it and I didn't like it. It was very well done, well acted movie. Had lots of emotions and captured the 'spirit' of the original. My only complaint is that the individual scenes were way too LONG. Just about every scene could have been cut in half and still have been just as effective. The one scene where they were being chased by dinosaurs? Too long. I was starting to look at my watch before it was over. Despite that it was good and I do recommend it. I just wish it had been edited a bit better. How geeky is it that I recognized most of the names during the credits as being LoTR alumni?

Peter Jackson is a god ...

... and there wasn't a live actor in the film worthy of sharing a screen with Adrien Brody. His talent leaves me breathless.

That is all.

I actually thought the dinosaur scenes were the best part of the movie, but I'm a sucker when it comes to top-notch CGI. Kong was very believable; his movements and emotions were so lifelike! I thought the first part of King Kong moved a little too slowly for my tastes, while the giant bugs totally freaked me out in a gross kinda way.

I would definitely warn against young, impressionable minds seeing this movie because there was a lot of nightmare-producing imagery here. But all in all it was a love story and I'll admit to getting misty-eyed at the ending. I'm left feeling that Mr Jackson did an admirable job, as did all the actors, in a slightly choppy and uneven movie.

four outta five stars; probably lives up to most of the hype.

Just got back and WOW!!! I loved it! I was expecting to get squicked out by the Anna/Kong love, but it wound up being more of a very strong friendship, so I didn't have to worry. I agree that it could have been a bit shorter (was the character of Jimmy really necessary?), but the action sequences were top notch. Several times I was scared out of my wits...especially...at the bottom of the ravine...with... the...BUGS!!! (Weeps, goes out and seeks counciling).

Adrien Brody struck me as an odd choice for Jack Driscol, but I think he pulled off the role very well. Jack Black, I thought, could have done better- he was the right sort of actor for the role, but didn't perform up to standard (so, the opposite of Adrien Brody).
Naomi Watts was awsome!!! I couldn't think of anyone who could have played the role as well as she did.

Edit: it would seem that in the entertainment industry, the name Jack has become synonimus with "hero".

We just got back from seeing it........magnificent! During the dinosaur stampede & pileup
scene, I was thinking: Speilberg must be green with envy, 'cause Jackson has shown how much better "Jurassic park" could have been!
The only part that seemed totally out of place was the part on the stage where they put on the bit about "sacrificing the girl to the beast" with all the fake natives. I think he took it just a bit too far there - other than that...great movie!

(Oh! And what did you all think of the X3 trailer?)

I went to see it on the first day it opened (Wednesday) and took my kids (4 and 6) to see it. I knew that the movie was PG-13 and knew about the dinosaurs (which I also knew they could handle), but had no idea about the bugs... so imagine my horror when that scene came up (never mind Kong going berserk on the shipmates... ugh)!

I thought were really freaky, but my attempts at covering their eyes were quickly shot down... they thought the bugs were somewhere on the scale of "cool!" to "gross!" and not at all nightmare-inducing... My explanation is that all this (man-eating worms! roaches the size of ponies! vampire bats! OH MY!!) is too far removed from reality, too fantastic to be really scary (think all the kids in the 60s soaking up B-horror movies)... so I have no regrets taking them :) .

As for myself, the movie totally reminded me of the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg 80's romp "Indiana Jones"... playful, romantic, humorous, a little bit gross, a little bit scary, and full of homages to older, similar films. USAToday ran an article on Friday on King Kong's Easter Eggs... the scene that lonewolf mentioned, for example, was copied from 1933's "King Kong". That's what the island savages looked like in the old black-and-white movie :) .

I saw it again last night and since I'd already seen it once I was able to focus on more things than I did the first time. The first time I saw it I was like drooling over the special effects but this time I really started noticing the acting. Every actor was perfect for their part!

Oh My Gosh this movie was amazing. I love Peter Jackson, he is so talented. Admittedly like the first 45 minutes moved a little slow but only because you hadn't seen Kong yet but that didn't bother me at all. The special effects were incredible. You literally forgot that you were looking into the eyes og a CGI character. The scenes on the island with the dinasoars, the ones looking down the satreets of old NYC, they were all extremely well done. It really is a tearjerker though. I cried so much when I saw it. I cried when Mr. Hayes died and then I pretty much lost it at the end when Kong died. And what was worse, was I saw it with my younger brother and my Dad and they were making fun of me after the movie was over. According to them "It was just a movie" and I should quit being such a girl  . This movie was sooooo good! I can't wait to see it again...without my brother and dad.

I just got back from the movie about an hour ago. Absolutely amazing! I thought the three hours flew right by since there was non-stop action.

I was excited to see Adrien Brody since a. he wasn't the type of person I'd imagine to play Jack Driscoll and b. because I love him. lol He's a fantastic actor. Naomi Watts was great too.

Even though we all know what happens in the end, it was still heartbreaking. :crybaby: Peter Jackson certainly did it justice, I noticed several references and things right from the original. Even if people are reluctant to watch such a long movie, I'd say it's worth it.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH. This movie was incredible!!!!!!!! I saw it this morning. 3 hours is nothing to me. As long as I go to the bathroom right before, I'm good. PJ is my hero and I love him.

I thought Andy Serkis was great, as usual! I was sad that his character died. lol Well, both of them. lol I felt so sorry for Kong at the end. I was all sad. The people on that island were freaky!!! Naomi Watts was so awesome! Very cool. The part where Kong and the last T-Rex was CRAAAAAAZY! Oh man but I was quite disturbed. First he bites its tongue off and then opens its jaw so that it breaks. OMG, I was squirming!!!!!!! That was just nasty. I was laughing, though. That whole part with the dinosaurs was amazing. I loved it. This whole movie was fantastic. I gotta see it again.
