I think God already has blessed him, that's why he's the pope right? ;)

Did he die?

If not now it will be soon.

Well then who replaces him when he dies? Don't laugh, I just don't know a whole lot about that kind of stuff.

well it's just about time he went

don't misunderstand me i don't wish his death, but i don't think he's fit for duty anymore (should have been discharged over 10 years ago, maybe more)

i don't want to start a flame about religion here (i have none, i'm an atheist) but the Vatican is a state (yes it is) that still has a leader elected on a life term basis
The only countries where it is still the case are non democratic countries (understatement for dictatorship)

Maybe the Vatican, which through the Bible, asks for peace and tolerance should first show the example

well if you don't agree just ignore me

CapnHuFlungDu
if he dies a new one will be elected by a counsel of bishops and cardinals and whatever (people that forgot that the Church was supposed to be poor)...

I'm not Catholic, yet I attend a Catholic school and we spent much of the day watching the news. Poor guy. :(

I feel bad for the guy. He had perverts for co-workers (maybe not direct co-workers but other catholic priests), he had to give up all of the pleasures in life (sex, etc. etc.) and he had that dang hunch back. It sucks to be Pope.

And, someone tried to kill him. :(

Yeah, it's real sad about his condition. He was known as The Great Communicator and his life has brought showing the importance of life, even if they are old, they are still important. I'm not Catholic, but protestant, and i still feel a loss with his death... i hope the vatican can find another great Pope.

Before I go any further, let me just say for the record. Though Catholic, I'm no fanatic.* I'm way more spiritual than religious and have unlimited respect for the Pope from a secular pov.

Well then who replaces him when he dies? Don't laugh, I just don't know a whole lot about that kind of stuff.

When the present Pope passes away a huge series of events is set into motion (which I'll spare everyone the details of).* It will all take several weeks before the next Pope is elevated.* In the meantime, the College of Cardinals must convene (they have 9 days to get to the Vatican) and those 117 persons will elect the next Pope (all under the guide of the Holy Spirit, supposedly).

I also want to say that I will miss him.* I was pretty much born when he was installed and he's the only Pope I've ever known.* It'll be kinda' odd to see someone else doing what I became used to as his job.* I feel he's served humanity well and deserves a rest.* It's probably a horrible analogy but he was really like Maximus in Gladiator in a way.* All he ever wanted to do was go home, but duty called him to serve Rome.* He served her well and hopefully people will honor him and his legacy.

I feel exactly the same way. I was born in 1979 and he is also the only Pope I've ever known. It will be very strange to see someone else do the job.

I'm pretty much a non-practicing Catholic, but I've always thought it was nice that the Church has one leader guiding all Catholics, regardless of ethnicity or nationality. Pope John Paul II really cared about all people, not just Catholics. For instance, he had what was probably the best relationship any pope had with Jewish leaders--his home town in Poland was 40% Jewish before the Holocaust and he saw his country ripped apart by the Nazis and then occupied by the USSR. The man saw a lot of suffering.

I do hope the cardinals can find the right person--someone who can honor John Paul II's legacy but bring the Church into the modern era.

Tarf, now is really not the time.

But, here's my response: Yes, the Vatican and the Holy See is a state. But the word "dictatorship" is not appropriate to this situation. The Vatican is the smallest city-state in the world (total population: 911 people). It is the will of the people of the Vatican to be ruled in this way. Democratically-held elections every 4 years might be ideal for the US (and similar elections are appropriate for almost every country in the world) but the Vatican is unique. It cannot be compared to dictatorships or tyrannical regimes in other parts of the world.

I completely agree with you. But the man is dying so I'm not going to be disrespectful towards him or the Vatican and the Catholic Church right now. (And I'm not saying you are being disrespectful, I just don't want to flame out about my feelings towards the Vatican, etc.)

One more thing, since this has the potential to get really personal and hurtful really quickly.

EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION AND EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO CONSIDERATION AND RESPECT. BY ALL MEANS, SHARE, BUT TAKE A MOMENT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'D FIND INJURIOUS IF YOU FELT A PERSONAL LOSS. IT MAY NEED TO BE SAID, BUT MAYBE NOT JUST YET.

Always be aware of the karmic energy you put forth.

As a Roman Catholic I would appreciate if this does not happen and thank you for saying it! I am not going to get into any further discussions on this as everyone has a right to their own beliefs and I for one give people the right to their opinion and want this in return! Thanks!

May he rest in peace.

I'm not Catholic but I respect human life none the less. If you want to get into a flame war or you like to troll then go to the view askew boards. They're infamous for that behavior.

I think this pope has touched many non-Catholics. That is a good part of his legacy.

I also respect the way that he is dying with dignity. I hope I have the strength to let go when my time has come.
