EarlhamGirl 04-22-2006, 11:16 AM I'm a huge fan of tennis and have played it literally my entire life. I adore to both play it and watch. I'm going to play in college and hopefully continue to excel at the game.
Do any of you play tennis or enjoy watching it on TV? Do you have favorite players (past or present)? What do you think of The Man known as Roger Federer and his domination of the men's tennis world? If you having anything to say about the sport, here is the place to say it!
BOBBY 04-22-2006, 11:26 AM i don't know much about tennis, its not very popular in Ireland, but i watch Wimbledon every year its good, i like the Williams sisters their "ace", McEnroe was a legend in his time too, i love the way he used to treat the ref's "you cannot be serious...." :24:

McEnroe is hilarious! That man is a character if I ever saw one! The grand slams are a ball to watch! I cant' wait for the french, wimbledon, and US!
By the way, if you like McEnroe you should read his book, which is suprisingly called "You cannot be serious." It is a terrific read and gives us plenty of insight into the mind of one of tennis most notable figures!

tuesdaymorning 04-22-2006, 01:02 PM Sometimes I watch it on tv when I see that it's on. I haven't actually played in a while though. I used to like playing a lot (except, just for fun). It's a great game. :)
LostIslandBaby 04-22-2006, 01:28 PM I agree, it's a great game to watch and play. It's a great way to get your exercise as well, and have a fun time all at once.
LOSTrocksmyREDSOX 04-22-2006, 06:45 PM I play tennis. It is a god game. I'm on the schoo tennis team. We suck... alot. We haven't won a game in 5 years xD;. The princile says if we win only once we get a party xDDDDD.
mygoodeye 04-22-2006, 06:53 PM i hated playing tennis in PE. the court was right by the river and i alwys hit it in and got told off. and i was crap at it (weak arms). its boring to watch on TV, but we went to see the tournament at Telford once and saw Henmen and Rudedski play and that was fun, that was about 8-10 years ago tho...
Emptyy 04-22-2006, 10:41 PM I dont really like watching it on TV. Its hard to follow the fast pace and intensity of it. But I do love to play it. My sister taught me how last summer and then I made the school team. It was quite fun.. although I am not that good haha
EarlhamGirl 04-23-2006, 01:13 PM wow, cool thanks for the heads up, ill check it out
I'm glad to hear you'll consider my recommendation! It is a great book and i think you'll like it!
ukgirl 04-23-2006, 06:11 PM I like watching Wimbledon fortnight (when it's not raining!) but I don't generally watch other tournaments - mostly because I never know when they're on and I don't have the sports channels on my cable TV.
I have to say that I don't enjoy it quite as much as when I first started watching - waaaayyyyy back in the 70s (yes, I'm that old!) - as I find the sheer speed of the serve-and-volley guys makes for boring viewing beacuse each point is over so quickly. Having said that, I also get very bored watching some of the baseline players slogging it out in those looooong rallies that go on for 20 or 30 balls - yawn. So I like rallies somewhere in between!
Also, I don't like any sport that is dominated for years on end by one person, eg. Borg, Sampras, Federer, Navratilova, Graf, etc. I can appreciate how good they are but I like a bit of excitement when watching tennis and, if you're fairly sure you know who's going to win, it gets to be a bit "samey". I know there are always surprises but I'm talking generally.
Well, I think that's enough, don't you?!
EarlhamGirl 04-24-2006, 08:22 PM I like watching Wimbledon fortnight (when it's not raining!)...
... And we all know how often it can rain in during the Wimbledon fortnight!

castingcrownsfan 05-16-2006, 01:27 AM My favorite tennis player is a local girl I met about two years ago. I remember seeing her picture in the paper long before that and thinking, "Man I thought tennis players were all a bunch of anemic little twinkies who'd fall over if you look at them hard, but this girl looks like she came to kick butt and take names!" I've seen her a play a few times, and she is literally the fiercest creature I've ever seen, personally, on a court. I'm only bummed that she's going away to school and I won't get to see her play anymore. She's taught me to really like tennis, and aside from being the dominating player she is, she's one of the nicest, smartest, funniest, coolest people I know.

islandchica 05-16-2006, 05:40 PM I don't really watch tennis on tv, but I'm thinking about joining the team at my school next fall. Of course, I'll have to take lessons over the summer because I don't know WHAT the crap I'm doing, but it's fun! We played it a little in P.E. and I think I'm decent at hitting, I just need to get the rules down and learn how to really play!

Good for you! Tennis is a lifelong sport and I highly recommend it. I hope you enjoy playing for your team! :D

LostInJack 05-22-2006, 12:59 AM I love tennis, I'm a Brit so it's Wimbledon for me, was lucky enough to win tickets a couple of years ago, Mark Phillipousis was in the final I really wanted him to win but alas he didn't.
LostIslandBaby 05-22-2006, 01:13 AM I like the Williams sisters. I don't know how they are as players, but I like the fact that they came straight out of Compton.

Good for you! I love tennis, but constantly feel bad for poor Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski. It's got to be hard to have all that pressure to win Wimbledon for the Brits! I think it has been 70 years since a British man won the Wimbledon title!

You have to admit they came a long way from their roots! :D

I agree! :D They have certainly done very well for themselves!
