View Full Version : The Tudors
halfrek 03-21-2007, 01:01 PM i was just treated to a sneak peek of this show ( the first two eppys). it is excellently done. Jonathan Rhys Meyers does a good job portraying the young Henry VIII. i so love this period of English history. i dont know how accurate it is, but from what i have seen so far, it seems to be following known facts as far as the French, English in fighting and conspiracys including fathers using their daughters to influence the king. ;)
sadly i dont have Showtime but this show kinda makes me want to get it just for this show. here is the linky just in case you want more info on this show. The Tudors (http://www.sho.com/site/tudors/home.do?source=shocom_nav?paidsearch=snipsgoogle)
PhillyGirl2873 03-21-2007, 04:50 PM Hmmm, I've been debating about getting Showtime because of Weeds and Dexter, but if they have another excellent show I may just have to break down and get it.

yeah, tough call. not sure i really want to pay more than i am already.:undecide: BTW, i was looking at that link i left. seems that you too can watch the first eppy. so give it a look and see if you think Jonathan and the cast are worth the extra bucks. ;) i am still trying to decide.
ETA: Sam Neil is playing a Cardinal, which just strikes me as funny, b/c he played Damian in the last Omen movie. yeah i know, long time ago, but i find the oddiest things funny. ;)
lambchops972 04-04-2007, 10:35 AM I watched the first eppy and I liked it pretty well. I love that period of time.
Sam Neill is great as always.
But Showtime is so funny with it's previews. It's going on and on about Henry and Anne like it's a great love tale and we know he takes her head off. It's kind of funny.
But I'll be tuning in because you know it's got pretty and hot sex. ;)
Petragrrl 04-04-2007, 10:49 AM I also caught the first two episodes through Showtime online... I thought it was highly entertaining!
Does anyone know whether episodes will be available through iTunes?
PhillyGirl2873 04-09-2007, 12:48 PM I just got Showtime and DVRed last nights epi. Sounds great!
diabolo237 04-15-2007, 07:39 PM Phillygirl its well worth having showtime for the Tudors. Not only is it well done, its the best new series on cable right now. I am hooked!
PhillyGirl2873 04-15-2007, 09:25 PM Thanks diabolo! I signed up last week and saw the second episode. Awesome! Its just awesome!
Majandra 04-28-2007, 11:36 AM Are you guys still watching?
I saw the first 4 eppies and I like it so far. I admit, I was only bored when I tuned in first and I read on imdb that Jonathan is in it and he's kinda hot...
Anyway, I really enjoyed it. A lot of ppl were comparing it to Rome and said Rome is way better but I have to disagree. I watched only 1 eppy of Rome and got kinda annoyed with it. Maybe because I know more about that period of time and at the time Rome started there were a lot movies and shows with the same subject, that it all seemed a little too "predictable" (I know "predictable" is probably the wrong word since we're talking about historic facts :71:)
I enjoy The Tudors because I think I only know 1 or 2 older movies about this time and I like to know more about it.
Pretty people and hot sex helps aswell.
PhillyGirl2873 05-08-2007, 11:06 AM I'm loving the show. I do know a lot of the story from history channel specials, and I worry that they are moving the story along too fast to sustain the show. But I don't know enough of the history to get mad if they get something wrong. And yeah there is a LOT of sex among very hot people, so that's always nice as well. But I really had to giggle at the Princess with the old king, that was hysterical! Oh yeah and Johnathan is very hot as well, so you can't go wrong there.
I love the show and it has me hooked.
Sam G 06-05-2007, 06:59 PM The Emmy screeners went out for the Emmys these are the ones that were submitted for the Tudors
Episode 107, 108, 109 finale
PhillyGirl2873 06-06-2007, 01:44 PM Is the season over already? I love Showtime, but these 10 episode seasons are killing me.
iamlost2 04-11-2009, 05:42 AM The new season of the Tudors have started, and I really looking forward to seeing Princess Mary back at court, and in her father's favor again. I'm also is looking forward to how they will portrayed Queen Jane. Is anyone else looking forward to see the new season of the Tudors? If so, what part in Tudors history, are you looking forward to see , portrayed on the show?
kitten_kath 05-03-2009, 12:24 AM I am a huge fan of this show. We won't get the new season starting here until July :(
I actually wanted to see how they portrayed his second Wife Anne. I think that actress did a marvelous job. I am also looking foward to seeing his 4th Wife. Apparently Henry couldn't stand her. That one should be interesting, lol.
They have started replaying from the beginning here... makes me realise how great an actor the man who portrayed Thomas More is.

I love Thomas More. I think Jeremy Northam (aka TM) is one of the best actors on the show. He should get a award for his performance in season 2. Natalie Dormer was great as Anne. Singer & songwriter Joss Stone will portrayed Henry VIII's 4 wife, Anne of Cleves. I think Stone is a rather strange pick , to portrayed someone who was called the'The Flander's Mare'.

LostisGenius 05-12-2009, 02:50 AM I do love The Tudors! They were just to cruel back then weren't they? Great storytelling, a pleasure for the eyes, nothing says excess like excess. Poor Henry, so misunderstood :eek2:
Majandra 06-18-2009, 11:01 AM --- merged this thread with the existing one for The Tudors ---
I just finished S3 of the Tudors and I have to say I liked it better than S2. Natalie Dormer did a fabulous job of playing annyoing Anne Boleyn... a bit too faboo for my taste. ;)
And I think S3 had more Henry Cavill... and did he lose weight? I thought he looked a lot better than in S2... yes I'm shallow. :hypocrit:
The storyline about Princess Mary and the Bavarian duke had me in stitches tho... the Bavarian dukes as Protestants? :24: Honestly??? :24:
That's a bit like saying Emperor Nero was best buddies with the early Christians. :71:
Although, and this was a total coincidence, I found out that the dukes of my home town are related to the house of Cleves and my home town is traditionally Protestant AND joined the Free State of Bavaria about 90 years ago... so maybe the Tudor writers meant a Duke of Coburg, not a Duke of Bavaria. ;) (Although there never was a Duke Philip in either house)
iamlost2 03-13-2010, 09:57 PM This will be the final season of the Tudors, and I will be sad to see the show end,and Henry VIII's end. However, I'm looking forward to seeing Mary,Elizabeth and little Edward growing up. This year they should be much older. I wonder how the show will handle their interaction with one another:). Joely Fisher (Julia from Nip/Tuck) will play the part of Katherine Parr, and they added a few new characters. However, I wonder how they will handle Charles Brandon's character. since he been the stand in for Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. So will Brandon die before Henry VIII , as he did in real life, or will he wound up in the tower.
Hunkyhurley 03-25-2010, 09:56 PM Finally watched everything thanks to Showtime on Demand....Looking forward to the coming season!
I wonder if it will end with King Henrys death? Or will they go a little bit further and give us a peek into Edwards crowning and short rule?

I hope they do, but I doubt it. I wonder who will be in the tower at the end of Henry VIII reign. In real life The 3rd Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Howard (Anne 's uncle) was sent to the tower on treason charges, but Henry VIII died and he had to remain in prison until Mary 1 came to the throne. But since Charles Brandon 's character has been merge with the character of Thomas Howard , I wonder who will be in the tower at the end of the series? It would be great if they recast Thomas Howard, since he ( and his family) was such a big part of Henry VIII's life towards the end of Henry VIII's reign, it would be unfair not to included him.
Hunkyhurley 04-26-2010, 02:41 AM I am hearing Jonathan Rhys Meyers did not want to gain any weight for this role. As we all know, Henry was obese when he died, so fat suit?
Some things arent lining up (like his leg injury) but I will let it slide since its merely entertainment
Majandra 04-26-2010, 07:06 AM Yeah it's fiction, not a documentary, so I'm willing to give them a little leeway.
Henry was already obese when he married Catherine Howard. At least I remember reading somewhere that she complained that he was old, fat and stank (especially his leg wound). Yuck. :31: Yeah I don't blame Jonathan that he didn't want to look like that but then on the other hand, he did accept this role...
Hunkyhurley 04-26-2010, 12:53 PM I think he should have gained a bit so his face would be chubby, then wear big clothing (he gets paid enough to gain a couple pounds!). Majandra I think he was already obese at this time too w/ the leg wound- I cant even imagine the horrible smell! Plus, I think he was so big he couldnt move on his own, they arent showing that at all. Oh well, Im waiting for annoying little Catherine to get the ax
Majandra 04-26-2010, 06:27 PM Catherine is really annoying. I though Anne Boleyn was annoying but oh wow, Catherine is so much worse!!!
On a totally shallow note I am kinda glad they don't make Jonathan Rhys-Meyers look as fat and yuck as he should look like. ;)
Hunkyhurley 05-10-2010, 01:04 PM OFF WITH HER HEAD! Glad shes gone....
If that stupid Francis kept his mouth shut he woulda spared his own life along with the other 2. I would have kept my mouth shut and enjoyed living at court. Not a smart move.
Majandra 05-10-2010, 04:58 PM Byebye Catherine, byebye...
Sometimes I wanted to feel sorry for her because she acted so young and naive like she had no clue what was going on. She looked so much like a child (and acted like one) most of the time. (Okay so she was probably only between 17 and 22 when she died...) But then she turned stone cold and flat out lied about the people close to her, like blaming Lady Rochford.
Still not sure about Culpepper if he really loved her or not. The way he raped that farmer's wife and then killed her husband just didn't make him the most sympathetic person ever.
From a completely artistic view the montage of the execution of Culpepper and Durham and Catherine dancing in the room and her voice over was beautifully done, as well as her last night and the king drinking and flirting with all these women.
