Ike's Knocking on the Door

Posted 09-12-2008 at 11:24 PM by texgeekboy
5 hours after the last post, not much rain but the wind is picking up. We're hunkered down for a long, restless night. There are 300,000+ homes without electricity in the area, but we still got ours.

A neighbor up the street was cutting up a fallen pine tree with his chain saw just 5 minutes ago. I think he was doing that because it may have fallen into the street, and he was clearing it. I'm sure he would rather be inside.

It's 3 hours after my previous post, and not much has changed. The NWS radar shows it is definitely headed my way. I'm about 70-80 miles from the coast.

I forgot to mention in my previous entry that Hurricane Alicia in '83 was the last hurricane to have a direct hit on Houston. As I said, I remember it well. The eye of the hurricane passed right through downtown Houston. Ike looks to be headed the same way!

I chatted with some neighbors since my last entry. They too have...

Getting Ready for Ike

It's a little after 2:00PM Friday afternoon and all that is on TV is Ike stuff. The talking heads never say anything new.

Most Houston offices let people off early yesterday and were completely shut down today. Luckily, some restaurants were open until 2:00 today. We just returned from our favorite Mom and Pop Italian restaurant with a pizza to go to supplement our food stash.

Good luck finding gas though, most stations were out late Thursday night. We filled up our cars...

I was responsible for the Y2K issue for several large computer centers in North and South America owned by my former company. When I say large, I mean several centers were in the top 50 in the world in total compute capacity.

Back in the 90s forums such as the 'lage didn't exist. The best thing we had were newsgroups, which were definitely a step above the earlier BBS.

I can't remember the exact name of the Y2K newsgroup I frequented. It was something like

Texas Stuff

One of my favorite Texas phrases is

Howdy all y'all

The "all y'all" part still amuses me. I expected the "y'all" to be plural, but unless you say "all y'all" it must be singular .

If I were a life-long Texan, I might speak like that. I still have some of my Pittsburgh accent even though I've lived in Texas for 33 years, which is way more than I lived in Pittsbur...
