"Wraiths" in the Pilot episode

Gregg,

First of all, I want you to know how much we 'Lagers appreciate your taking the time to read our posts.

My question is this: Several months after the Pilot episode aired, fans began noticing that clues can be found in just about every episode if you look hard enough. One clever viewer who went back and reviewed the Pilot episode discovered what looked like a strange object swooping down and hitting the engine as it exploded (what some call a "wraith"). Other viewers (myself included -- call me a Mulder) latched on to this weirdness and found other stuff. Basically, some of the flying debris in that scene looked to us, well, suspicous.

There are now two camps: 1) non-believers who think it's just purposely (or poorly) rendered CGI or actual debris; and 2) believers who think there's more to it than meets the eye.

Would you be willing to help settle a long-running dispute? Is there more to that scene than meets the eye? Are those objects flying around the engine just debris? Does something run by TurbineGuy just before he gets sucked into the engine?

Thanks! Your answer will help to finally lay this thing to rest.

Re: "Wraiths" in the Pilot episode

This sounds like a great dispute. Why would I want to settle it?

One of the things I like about Lost is that it lives in a grey, ambiguous world -- which for me is closer to reality than shows where everything is wrapped up by the credits and nothing is left open. On Lost, you can develop a theory and find examples to back it up, and then someone else can develop an opposite theory with examples to back it up. Isn't that an amazing thing? It reflects not only the different ideologies that battle it out in the real world but the different perspectives that each person has.

So enjoy your dispute. I'm sure there are some lively, enjoyable conversations it inspires.

PS. I'm a big Tolkien fan, so thanks for thinking of Lost in the same camp by using the term "wraiths."
