This episode wouldn't be the last we saw of James heroics before seasons end, but watching his efforts to protect and deliver Claire and Aaron back to the beach camp like the big brother role he adopted with selfless determination was heartwarming.
Oh yeah, another of the best parts of this episode. Sawyer's growth really has come full-circle on this show, and THIS episode was a great illustration of exactly that. He absolutely shined. How selflessly he behaved, putting Aaron and Claire ahead of everything else, accounting for their safety.
When he asked Kate in 'Eggtown': "What would we have done with a baby?" - - I think he answered his own question there. He (and Kate) would damn near die to protect a baby, as they've both clearly shown.
Of course, the closing scene between Kate and Jack was really well written and performed by Evangeline and Fox. MF does tittering on the edge, meltdown very convincingly, and he really sold Jack's desperation to hold on to his sanity, which we already know from previous FF's, he fails at.
There was only one way that relationship could end, and unlike 'ET' which was just a poorly written episode all around, this one was written with honesty and attention to past characterization that was long established.
it was a great ending scene for the two. the desperation they both feel to have a normal like, yet they cannot and will not until they return to the island. the island is reaching out to the o6, haunting them until they return to fix what john locke told jack would be eating at him while he was gone. john was right, as we knew he would be.
You could put Jack and Kate on a New York City street and have them pass each other at rush hour on a Wednesday morning. And they would stop and turn, slowing to watch each other go by. They know each other within the context of a universal recognition. They have met before this life. And, they will meet again, in another.

And he made sure Miles (love him!) knew he meant business about keeping those two safe. I've always loved how sweet and careful he's been around Claire, and adopting the big brother role was just an extension of what we've seen all series long. Just wish we could have seen more of that protectiveness with Karl and Alex before they both died, but alas.

Sawyer = WIN.
All-rea-dy!
The finale two images of the episode spoke volumes about the connection between James and Kate; just as it fittingly picked up from where 'ET' left off in answering what would be a life altering change for Kate upon leaving the island..."What would we have done with a baby?"
Why James, protect and love it with everything you got...naturally.
