Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

[continued]

NARRATIVES/NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH/CHARACTER SPECULATIONS

-As others on this thread have noted, Charlie calls himself a "coward," while Kate disagrees. It's also a reference to the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz.
-Claire speculates that Boone is Shannon's boyfriend, and Shannon pauses before she says that he is her brother.
-Shannon tells Claire that Boone is "God's freaking gift to humanity."
-Michael tells Walt "I mean what I say."
-The Sawyer and Sayid fight scene is full of labels and narration: Sayid calls Sawyer a redneck. Sayid tells Sawyer to tell the rest of them what he told Sayid, that Sayid made the plane crash. Sawyer says "if the shoe fits" which is both a saying about identity and also another fairy tale reference. He also calls Sayid "buddy," albeit sarcastically!
-Sawyer narrates how Sayid was in the back row of business class with his hands underneath the blanket and that "the guy sitting next to him didn't make it." He also tells about how Sayid was pulled out of line before they boarded.
-When Sayid suggests he can help, Sawyer says: "Oh. Great. Perfect. Let's trust this guy."
-More Sawyer narration: "Whatever you say, Doc--you're the hero."
-Hurley plays narrator, too: Sawyer is a "chainsmoking gnome."
-Sayid responds "some people have problems" and Hurley agrees that they all have problems.
-Hurley says "I've got a buddy over there" (Iraq). Sayid says he was in military operations in the Republican Guard (not Air Force or Army). An interesting military connection with Hurley that is often forgotten.
-Shannon cries over a corpse and said "I think I was mean to him." She says, "he wouldn't let us have our seats in first class--he saved our lives." This directly contradicts Charlie's flashback in the same episode.
-Boone retorts to Shannon "we've all been through a trauma."
-Shannon tells Boone to "shut up and stop trying to be charming" (another "Prince Charming" reference)
-Shannon speculates regarding Kate--"What are you, like two years older than me?"
-Charlie tells Shannon that Kate "is actually really nice."
-More Sawyer narration, this time encompassing both himself and Kate: "I'm a complex guy, sweetheart."
-Jack narrates seeing Vincent in the first part of the Pilot. "He looked good." (This is a funnier line if Vincent turns out to be either an agent for "good" or "evil" on the Island.)
-After Aaron kicks, Claire says "I guess I think you're a 'he.'"
-Hurley tells Jack "I'm not so good around blood, man."
-Boone's narration doesn't really go along with the rest of the narration/speculation regarding the polar bear. Boone: "That can't be a polar bear."
-Sayid and Kate say it is, Sawyer and Charlie agree. Shannon seems two steps behind everyone in what is going on.
-Another narrated tense change, much like Charlie changing Driveshaft from past to present: Boone says in present tense that this polar bear lives this far south, and Sawyer changes his statement to past tense: "Did. It did."
-Sawyer speculates that the polar bear came from "Bear Village."
-Sawyer tells them that he got a gun and a badge off of one of the bodies.
-Another great Sayid/Sawyer narration exchange. All this takes on new meanings with a more prominent idea of proxies and the fact that Sayid was the prisoner in "316." Sayid narrates that he believes Sawyer was the prisoner and sat beside the U.S. marshal. Then he calls Sawyer a "son of a vincent." Sawyer: "Be as suspicious of me as I am of you." Sayid insists: "You are the prisoner." Sawyer: "Fine! I'm the criminal. You're the terrorist. We can all play a part." It seems significant that Kate interrupts before Shannon gets a chance to narrate who she is.
-Sawyer calls Shannon "sweetcheeks."
-Flashback scene: The marshall says that there is an off chance that her story will be believed.
-Flashback scene: The marshall calls Kate "kiddo" and tells her she has to stay positive.
-Flashback scene: Kate says that she doesn't care what the marshall believes, and he says "That's true. That has always been true."
-Sawyer questions Sayid's leadership of when or where it is a good time to check the radio.
-Sawyer says that the radio "doesn't even work" and "there's no transmission." Clue?
-On Shannon's dubious ability to speak French, Sawyer says "Do you speak French or not?--'cause that would be nice." Boone is the one who is so insistent that Shannon speaks French, she seems very uncertain about the whole thing and says she only drank in Paris. Even when she starts translating, Sawyer reiterates the narration: "You don't even speak French!"
-Boone tells Shannon "that was good."
-Sawyer calls Sayid "chief."

DO I KNOW MORE THAN I SHOULD? OR NOT?
-In the flashback, Charlie BOLTS down the aisle when he realizes Cindy and the flight attendants are onto him. Obviously it's probably just due to needing his fix, but in combination with refusing the water it is possible he knows or remembers something. He also seems to expect them to come after him.
-Does Jin "remember" something about Michael and Sun that causes his instant antagonism with him? After their initial hostility, they become friends, and then fall apart again when Michael betrays them--but they "make up" on the ship the last we saw the two of them together.
-Sayid seems way too calm, almost routine, about the whole situation of having just crashed in a plane and needing to work on the radio transceiver to try to save them.
-Sun speaks to Kate in Korean, and Kate NODS like she understands her.
-Walt says he thought Vincent would be close.
-Just like in the first hour, Jack finds what he is looking for really quickly.
-Sawyer thinks they should be checking the radio earlier, but Sayid is confident they have to go higher.
-Sawyer doesn't flinch or run when the polar bear comes for them...everyone else runs. As Sam mentioned, Kate screams his name as they run.
-Sayid and Kate continue to know way too much, and their knowledge of the Island and certainty of how things work continues to stand out.
-The famous Kate and Sawyer scene. "I know your type." / "I'm not so sure." / "Yeah, I've been with girls like you." / "Not girl's exactly like me."
-Sayid seems amused when Kate holds the gun and he tells her not to use it. He doesn't seem concerned with her having it at all, even before she says she plans on dismantling it.
-When Charlie says "Where are we?" and they focus in on Kate's face...it's because she knows.
-Kate shakes her head at Shannon as Shannon translates! And we know that Shannon's translation missed some things and wasn't the best translation.

MEMORY CONFUSION/PROBLEMS
-Charlie runs by Shannon and Boone in first class, although Shannon narrates to Boone in the same episode that their lives were saved because a man prevented them from being in first class.
-Jin seems clearly jealous about Sun and Michael...seems clueless about Sun's affair later on, so is this completely irrational jealousy or does he just know Sun better now than later?

GAPS
-Not really a gap in time, more a gap in why something had happened--when Charlie goes to try to open the first bathroom door, it is locked. It's not in the back, though, where Bernard presumably was...so who or what is in that bathroom? Was that Nathan? Did I miss something?
-We see Hurley washing himself off in the water, and what looks like a few moments later, he is in the clearing area already dry and back in the blue checked shirt for Jack to order him to find antibiotics.
-Sawyer says he found the marshal with his gun and badge, but we don't see it. Did he really go up to the feverish marshal and just pinch it off of this guy? He's still alive at this point, or at least Jack and Hurley seem to think so as they are operating. Did Sawyer and the marshall have a conversation that we didn't see? We know that the marshall was determined to talk with Jack.

SHOES/FEET
-Charlie's black and white check shoes are a hiding place/vessel for his drugs.
-Sayid shouts and Sawyer for him to tell the rest of them that Sayid crashed the plane, and Sawyer says "If the shoe fits, buddy!"
-Boone points out that they have all been through a trauma, but that Shannon has spent the time giving herself a pedicure.

JEWELRY
-Charlie has a necklace.
-Boone also has a necklace.
-Claire also has a necklace.
-Shannon has earrings, no necklace.
-Sun's wedding ring is very visible.
-Rose has her necklace with Bernard's wedding ring.
-Claire is wearing a lot of jewelry when Jin comes to feed her.

WOUNDED
-Claire's chin has a cut in it, nothing else.
-Sun has blood on her forward, not obvious.
-Michael also has a small forehead wound like Sun.
-Sawyer and Hurley have forehead cuts, opposite sides.

ANIMAL IMAGERY

-Walt, as he walks through the trees holding a dog collar/leash finds handcuffs (human chains).
-In the fight scene, I think Sawyer utters his first "son of a vincent." Sayid also uses it (to refer to Sawyer, of course).

UNUSUAL FEATS/MIRACLES
-The marshal wakes up miraculously after Jack didn't expect it to happen. "Where is she?"

Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

MISCELLANEOUS

-Charlie tells Kate he was throwing up in the bathroom, which is an action that is associated with so many things that we have seen on the Island--it is a form of purging, a symptom of being sick OR of having an overdose of alcohol/drugs, and it is also a side effect that many women get when they are pregnant.
-In the flashback, Charlie has his headphones around his neck almost like a collar with a leash.
-Sayid and Sawyer's fight scene is both intense and also HILARIOUS the way they go at it.
-Many characters are wearing watches--off the top of my head I remember ones on Sayid and Jin.
-Kate is the one who ultimately stops Sawyer and Sayid's fight--Michael is completely ineffectual and Jack only partially successful at breaking it up.
-The walk to the radio tower is REALLY high and seems way more complicated than later on, although they might have just found a better way to get there.
-Michael is trying so hard, he tells Walt he will "get you another dog" (idea of replacing something/someone you loved with someone else) AND he does this too soon and even before they know that Vincent is dead. He just doesn't get it.
-When Sawyer reads his letter, the wreckage he is sitting in is in a big --broken--circle.
-Sawyer and Sayid's argument seems to trigger the sounds that result in the polar bear eventually arriving. (!!!)
-Kate STEALS the gun (theft).
-Kate says re: the gun: "I want to take it apart" (Think of the symbolism of a whole tool--in this case a weapon--separated out into pieces so it can't perform its function)

COMMENTS
I'm wondering if necklaces signify something, some kind of "mark" or collar. They are another circle.
-Narration, whether sarcastic on the part of the character or not, seems to either hold truth or create truth. Sawyer says that Sayid is his buddy, and Sayid becomes his buddy. Sawyer says to trust Sayid, and everyone does implicitly trust Sayid, even when he seems to go off the deep end.
-Who is Hurley's buddy in Iraq?
-Does Kate know Korean? Does she know French? Did she know these languages in a previous iteration/alternate universe?
-I love Sun's act of defiance when she undoes the button.
-Kate says "something's coming" before the polar bear shows up...recently a whisper said something like "Sawyer/Sun/someone's coming"--any chance it was actually Kate saying "something's coming" played back?
-I forgot how Sayid is always jumping in and wrestling with people, especially around Kate.
-What's that logo on Sawyer's shirt?
-Other than saving their lives (or possibly knocking them out for hoax theorists)--are the oxygen masks symbolic of anything, i.e. a masking of identity?
-Kate shakes her head at Shannon as Shannon translates!

I will discuss my notes on the commentary at a later point. These early ones are taking longer because they are so epic in scope, and I'm also listening to the commentary.

Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

On the season 1 dvd disc 7 - there is a deleted scene between Kate and Sayid - we find out Charlie is the one who told everyone about what happened to the pilot. What I find interesting and that Sayid notices it, he says to Kate, "I don't like it here but you...you don't like it here even more than I do."

Why would that be? Hum? Does Kate remember a little more than everyone else?

They don't have it on youtube.

Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

I noticed that Kate and Sayid seemed to feel very comfortable around each other; like they have known each other awhile. At first I thought it was attraction but after Season 5 I'm thinking they know that they know each other or they sense something familiar about each other.

Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

I was listening to the commentaries and at one time TPTB had thought of a romance between Sayid and Kate and that certainly came across in their scenes but then chose Shannon because it was an unlikely pairing.

Watching again as the roles are defined for each character

Bear Village the first of many memorable Sawyer lines.

Re: LOST Rewind: Pilot, Part 2

Wow, what a flashback to read my extensive notes on this episode. If only I was good at applying my observations to a formulated theory.
