Sun's motherly instincts ...

As Doc Jensen pointed out in his recap today Sun is once again acting weird. He points out the scene where Kate left Aaron in Sun's care at the Hotel while she went to meet with the lawyers. Sun assures Kate that she can handle watching Aaron b/c there is candy in the mini-bar and hundreds of channels on tv.

At the moment I heard Sun say this in the episode I though it was a weird thing to say too but had forgotten all about it until the Jensen's article reminded me. I think this just throws more support onto my theory that Ji Yeon is gone (either dead - or more likely - kidnapped)

Ji Yeon too young...?

Previously I thought it was most likely Widemore who did the kidnapping but now I think it must have been Ben. I say he kidnapped Ji Yeon to bring her to L.A. and use her as leverage to get Sun to return to the island. Sun suspected Ben all along and this would explain why she has been working with Widemore to get to / kill Ben. What do you think?

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

Hmmm... so the phone-conversation she had in the S4 finale with her mother and Ji-Yeon was just a fake one? That was not long ago, just the day she approached Widmore in London.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

And yet when she was in L.A. and tried to call there was no answer which was quite upsetting to her.

Of course it was. But she tried to call, which means she thought she'd find her there... so it doesn't explain the baby photo, even if something actually is the matter with Ji-Yeon.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

Are you talking about when she tried to make a phone call at the airport in London and there was no answer? We don't know who she was calling then.

I do really like this theory, but I would think it would need to be something that happened very recently, after she initially spoke with Widmore. I absolutely do think that Sun is being totally scary right now, though, and I also thought it was bizarre that she only had the infant pic of Ji Yeon.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

I agree with the OP. Sun will never win mother-of-the-year.
Besides the candy and the tv, Sun left Aaron alone while she went to open the package.
It's now quite clear what the Ji Yeon baby pic was all about; Sun's just not bothered to replace it.
She loves Ji Yeon but she doesn't have any interest in day-to-day parenting. She's quite happy to let her mom care for Ji Yeon.

This is consistent with a lot of what we've seen about Sun in past episodes and seasons.

No one's kidnapped Ji Yeon, though. Not yet, at least. Sun loves her dearly and would have been upset in the hotel scenes. Her beef with Ben and Jack is over Jin, Sun's always been sneaky and vengeful.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

Please, I know many parents who park the kids in front of the tv with a movie when they need some time to take care of things and give them candy to shut them up. Those are my baby sitting secrets as well and my nieces love me! I haven't killed one yet.
And she didn't 'leave the kid alone', she left him in the next room. Yes, it was to look at a gun but it's not like she gave him the gun to play with.
I think Ben is seeing to it that Ji yeon is being brought to LA so Sun can take her with them when they go back. Sun wouldn't go back with out her.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

OK - clearly most of us don't think we are above sitting a kid on front of the tv for awhile but this is a scripted television show. They wouldnt have her say something like that w/o a reason.

As far as the phone call situation I thought I had explained that in the original thread I linked but I'll try again...

IMO

Just like the dart-gang has been going after Sayid, and the lawyers have been coming after Kate ... someone has been going after Sun / Ji Yeon as well. I think they have either attempted to abudct Sun and/or Ji Yeon or at the very least made some serious threats. These on going threats are what made Sun want to come after Ben which lead her to Widemore. I think by the time Sun landed in L.A. Ji Yeon is gone. The most likely culprit in my eyes would be Ben wanting to get her to L.A. so that either she can return to the island with the other O6, or to be used as leverage to get Sun to go.

Re: Sun's motherly instincts ...

I don't think it's possible that Ji Yeon has been kidnapped or anything along those lines. If she had been, sun wouldn't be all smiles showing Kate pictures, and and saying how it would be great to see her and Aaron play together.

As for it being a baby picture, that doesn't seem that unusual to me. Especially considering that Sun doesn't exactly seem to be preoccupied with her role as mother, it wouldn't be surprising that the picture she has is a couple years out of date.

I have to take it at face value that she is in LA to kill Ben. The only twist I can see as plausible now is that perhaps Ben and Widmore are now working together to get the O6 back to the island, and Ben therefore knows she is there, and the gun is loaded with blanks. If that is the case, then it makes sense that the only person he was concerned about getting was Hurley. He never mentioned any concern bringing Sun back.

But was Sun's baby in the car with Sun and Aaron? Or am I confused?
