While healing from a neck fusion last year, I rented all the episodes of LOST to get on board. I'm having trouble remembering something (perhaps the meds?) about Charlotte. I seem to remember a scene, just like the one after Ben moves the Island and lands in the desert. However, the earlier scene included Charlotte excavating a polar bear in the desert. I seem to remember her being very friendly with Ben. Did this happen or did I dream it?

Part of what you remember is true. In the episode "Confirmed Dead" (the second episode of season 4) she excavated a polar bear in Tunisia with Dharma collar on it. However, Ben was not present, and the newspaper appeared to put the timeline at about the same time as the Oceanic 815 crash.
I was thinking about that episode last night. If Charlotte had been looking all her life to go back to The Island but didn't know how, I have 2 questions:
#1) why was she reading about flight 815's crash in every newspaper she could find, (comment from the woman that was with her in Tunisia), if indeed she DIDN'T know where the island was, or that flight 815 was anything more than just another plane crash. and....
#2) If she left the island as a child (so young that her mother said she made it up and Charlotte didn't really question her on it), how did she know about the polar bears? Or even where to dig for them?
Does anyone think there's more to Charlotte's time travelling than meets the eye? Seems like she knew more than she should have.

I'm assuming she had been using her anthropology/archaeology work to begin figuring out Dharma clues. I think by the time she was brought to the island, she had confirmed by hard data that her memories were something more than a child's fantasies. If she knew what symbol to look for, if she knew to look in that exact spot in Tunisia, and if she knew to be alert for unexplained plane crashes in the South Pacific, she knew quite a lot already. And Widmore's people knew enough to tap her for the expedition.
