I'm thinking that if Ben and the Others don't have a name for it, then our trying to 'put a name to it' may be in vain. Just sayin'....

I think this is a key idea.

I am thinking that Egyptian mythology is only one of many belief systems that have been and will be featured on the Island (or at least, in the show).
I'm not certain that what we are looking at in Smokie's lair is really Egyptian.
Firstly, the 'Lightning Snake' figure; no Egyptian styling at all.
Then there is the figure supposed to be Anubis. If so then:
Why isn't it holding an ankh?
Why isn't it wearing any adornments or have any Egyptian affectations at all?
Why is it sitting akimbo, almost like an American native stylization?
Why is it seemingly naked, save for the lines on the legs that could be construed as buckskin?
I don't know, but I have a guess: It's not Anubis.
This may be ancient American mythos being presented-
This is a depiction of
Coyote, the trickster spirit, perhaps in supplication to
Quetzalcoatl (Aztec god of death and ressurection) regarding his many acts of (usually irreverant) mischief.
It
may be presented as a correlation of Ben (coyote) in judgment before Smokie, but also (mainly) as another example of what
kansasgal said about the previous occupants trying to make sense out of the unusual properties of the Island.
The 'eyes' appear more to be Aztec/Mayan than Egyptian, and the figure at the base of the 'zig-zag' critter can be a step pyramid of those same peoples.
To make things worse (or more fun

) we also may have the possible situation that different peoples that have come to the Island at different times may add to existing engravings. The secret door in Ben's room sure looks rather 'multi-cultural' to me, there is more than just hieroglyphs on it.
Can't wait until we come across a Celtic stone ring and/or some Viking stuff.
So. what do ya think?
