Well we haven't seen him die yet so there's always a chance they can save him like they save little Ben.
There is still a chance for that.. potentially. However, the scene where Dan's mother tells him that if he returns to the island it will make her proud. Seems to me like she is sacrificing her son for the island. Of course she knew that sending Dan back to the island would mean his death, but what isn't clear yet is why she believed so strongly about orchestrating the demise of her own son.
Jump ahead to 2:40 into the clip to see it. Guess who's looking up FUBAR in the German dictionary???
Speaking of that film... his breakdown in the stairs later in the film is just about the most painful scene in cinematic history. YEAH, YEAH, I'm sure there are plenty that are tougher to sit through, but that scene was just... wow. Great actor!

Maybe she knew she would shoot him, but also that he would be healed and go on to do....something important.

Oooooh, alright! Maybe she knows the healing process will turn him into the same kind of dude Ben turns out to be, which would also make her feel pretty guilty! I like this!
I was thinking he went there intent on killing Eloise. If she dies on island, she would never bring him up as a scientist, he would never do time experiments, etc.
I think it was his attempt at being a variable to change things.
You're right. He might be alive. Doesn't change how idiotic his plan was.
I hope Dan's alive but he started to get that glassy "dead" stare at the end of the scene.
What's up with someone just shooting someone just cause they're holding a gun on someone else? That never happens on LOST.

That was a wonderful scene. You felt for him but you wanted to kill him at the same time. Really astounding.

I'm not so sure about that. After seeing Eloise wasn't there, he directly asked Richard where the hydrogen bomb was. It seemed he wanted to tell Eloise about the events that are unfolding, and ask her for the bomb.
LOST: The End. What a great ride it was.
