We all thought they were "damaged goods" and the island didn't want them but the reason for that was that they were already on a list. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Locke (these were the only people, we know of, that Jacob visited before 815 crashed) were brought to the island by Jacob in order to disprove his counterpart. They were part of his progress plan.
Remember Pickett said to Tom, Shepardis not on Jacobs list. They made it a point that the only reason Jack was there, was because Ben brougth him there and it was not something Jacob wanted. Wondering why???
Jacob also visited Sun and Jin before the crash as well - basically blessed their marriage. Hurley & Sayid were the only post-crash visits we saw. Jacob actually seemed to cause Nadia's death by distracting Sayid, thus distracting her. They both would have crossed that street in time had they not been interrupted.
Ben said that he never was granted an audience with Jacob - he just received slips of paper and lists from Richard on behalf of Jacob.
The first place that Ilana visited was the cabin. Was she looking for Jacob or Not Jacob? She and Bram seemed alarmed that the circle of ash was broken. Did this circle protect Jacob or contain Not Jacob? She said, "He's not here anymore," and then immediately trekked to the statue. So I'm guessing she was looking for Jacob. If so - then Jacob did live in the cabin and left his calling card for Ilana to find him in the statue.
I think that Ben used the list device to his best advantage by then changing lists about to suit himself now and then. As far as the Others would know, Ben's lists were Jacob's lists.
Looks like Christian and Claire went rockstar on the cabin and trashed it. Wonder where they are now?

It seems the cabin was trapping Esau, Jacobs brother (the loophole guy).
I'm guessing Hurly broke the ash when he fell....just guessing.
I think Bram and Ilana were going to kill Esau.
There was a pointed line from Ben during his rant at the end of the episode where among other things, he says something like, "...all those instructions from Richard."
I think it's likely that Richard was the intermediary between Ben and Jacob's instructions (lists, etc)
cause the writers revise the show every damn season and toss out everything it was built on

Well had you paid attention last night, Ben said Richard was the intermediater. He said he would get slips of paper with notes on them and lists from Richard which was from Jacob.
I would love to see what the writers change on this show if you have something to share???
