We got the answers about Richard but the dialog was still too ambigious for any etched in stone answers. The best part of the show was Richard waking up to the boar enjoying his dinner, an eewwwww moment
I CAN RESIST JUST ABOUT ANYTHING ... EXCEPT TEMPTATION
This is definitely an episode that deserves a 10 and more! I've been looking forward to seeing Richard's story for a while, and wow, the writers wrote it and actors, director, etc executed it just perfectly! I loved all the info we got in this episode and I especially liked the explanation of what the island is/does. It was also amazing to see Richard, who seemed so cool, calm and mysterious in the previous seasons be so... different in this episode. Excellently played by Nestor Carbonell!

This just goes to show that if you give a seasoned method actor some good material and a decent explanation of the character's motivations, they'll deliver!
I gave it a 9 because of Hurley's comment to Jack. I'm tired of people hiding stuff from Jack. At first he didn't know stuff (and neither did the other characters) because the audience wasn't supposed to know.
Six seasons later WE know, the other characters know, and Jack is still told it's none of his business . What would have been so bad if Hurley told Jack: "It's Richard's wife and she has a message for him" or, if the reveal was supposed to be the wife, then say: "It's someone who has has a message for Richard". I mean, who really thought after Isabella died that Hurley was speaking to someone other than Isabella?
Gave it a 9. Loved it, but too little present-island.
And yes, CL, I'll echo your statement. I know it's likely too late, what with a handful of epis to go, but wouldn't it be nice if someone would just frakkin' divulge some info straight up?? Secrecy for the sake of intrigue is becoming tiresome!
But yeah, I loved the Richard bits. NC had such pathos! Most tragic LOST character ever, living so long, being so lonely, being convinced of his 'sins' and his chance at redemption. Great stuff.
I gave it an 8. I was a little torn between 8 and 9. Big props to Nestor Carbonell and the general atmosphere of the flashback. The Black Rock/Statue solution felt a little forced to me. And the big reveal of Richard's past wasn't that much of a reveal anymore. We had been given enough hints. Apart from that, lots of stuff to like. And of course, answers.
What a lovely, lovely episode! Nestor Carbonell is a fantastic actor, and I'm so glad he got an entire episode dedicated to his character Richard/Ricardo.
This episode reminded me of BSG's "Unfinished Business", which I liked a lot, too: We learned a lot about certain characters through flashbacks that made us understand their present actions, even though the episode as a whole did not contribute much to taking the present story farther along.
Gave it a 10, only the 2nd time Ive done that this season. Ive been waiting since Not in Portland for this episode and, yeah, they could have gave more answers, but Im completely satisfied with what they did answer and all the new stuff from the ep as well.
I did enjoy this episode, and NC's the reason. What a range he has, and to see the script demanding a dramatic turn instead of the icy cool persona we're used to was fantastic. I'll also echo CL's sentiment: He delivered! 9 for Nestor's performance.
Finally, we know the purpose of the Island. Can we ditch the old "Craphole" monicker and replace it with "Corky"?! D'juss kiddin'...
What I'm unsure of, is if it's really evil that it's keeping in, and not something else. What I mean is we have seen the Island play out on our Losties's fears, and their happiness. Richard was afraid of going to hell before the priest refused absolution, therefore, when MiB scanned him, he could have used his fear of hell to make Richard believe that's where he is. If you would ask old John Locke, or Rose Adler if the Island was hell, they'd say no way! It's heaven!
So, I'm undecided on what it is the Island is "corking", who's really the bad guy between Jacob and MiB and what part, if any, our last standing Losties will play in the upcoming climatic events. 3 for the cryptic reveal!
On average, 6. This episode has given depth to the overall story arc and I can't wait to see where TPTB take it from here.

True enough...I suppose Hurley didn't need to keep that from Jack. I'm one who's never really been bothered by the supposed lack of communication but that scene jumped out at me.
I have it a 10. Loved it. Waited so long for it, and it delivered in every way. Glad they made it a whole ep like that, rather than just showing us with a series of FB's. Didnt mind missing some island action at all for the sake of hearing Richard's story.
The poll numbers are sweet! Everyone loved this episode. For once though I thought the Loved it would sorely outnumber the Didnt Love it, but nope, not happening! Meh, who cares, it's just the same six or seven people moaning back and forth each week anyway.
"...Jack and Sawyer. They're the duality. They're one of the most important character axes on the show."
I always fall for smoke, mirrors and flashes in the pan and stuff like that, which is why I gave it a 10. On a second view, problems began to emerge. The MIB and Jacob's game is becoming more and more confusing, instead of more clear. Richards role is also very unclear. If Richard is to mediate between the newly arrived, why didnt he do so with the Losties? and, of course, everything is going to be explained based on characters introduced in the last 20% episodes of the series.
smaller peeves: richard learning to speak english from reading. How does he know how to pronounce the words? A wooden ship breaks a stone statue? An almost all-powerfull entity brings maybe thousands of people to their deaths unwillingly and is trying to prove a point about free will?
