I think this episode left no doubt that the Island itself is the main character here. Those who hate it may have missed that point. That to me was the entire point of this episode and I loved it.
You know, I starting to think that what made this show great in the past, is that it sparked the imagination and got people talking. It's appeal was in the possibilities it presented. It wasn't great, we were. It appealed to people with varied educational backgrounds and ages. All the people who theorized about time travel, quantum physics, and the numbers.. it was a real education on the chat boards.
I remember one person saying that he learned more watching/discussing Lost than he ever did in high school.
But now, we are just back to the mortal writers trying to close a show.. and that means that they have to attempt to please everyone.. an impossible task. And, it is really disappointing almost everyone. All our theorizing, fun, arguments and bug-eyed anticipations are landing on dry land. Not because it is a bad show, but because it is ending.
I, for one, am thankful for the ride.
I really liked it. We did get an explanation about who Jacob and MIB are, who Adam and Eve are, what the Island's "secret" is, why MIB doesn't have a name (so sad), that the gift of "seeing the dead" doesn't necessarily come from the Island (I'll have to watch again to make sure I'm correct on that one), who did the hiroglyphics on the buildings and how life on the Island really is one big circle. We also learned that they spoke perfect English even before the language was invented. :girn: I think I'm going to watch this one and the last season's finale and this season's episodes and I'll bet things will become even more clear.
Well, it think after a few lines of Latin (?) they established the language and didn't need to continue in it. The whole episode would have been too much.

I am mixed on if i liked it or not.. just left me more questions than answers.
i can only think that they were raised well - to reach a goal at what ever ends it take.
to kill or malnipulate. Jacob is just as guilty as MIB. thier mother was no different than the humans she warned them against. the classic "what have you done" is laced in this show.
each person doing something they should not have done.
I could only think of lords of the ring and how the ring effected people.
endless questions.. endless sense of fear about lost coming to an end.
what will happen to our losties..will they see the "light" and make the right choices..
All in all, it was a good episode and I liked it very much. Reading back on some of the posts, I saw that some said they had more questions. I had questions too, until I thought back to when MiB and Jacob's mom first came and she had questions. Mother Island said that she couldn't answer any more because that question would lead to another and so on.
I kind of wonder if that was put there as a kind of hint to the fans....
There's always going to be questions and answers, and more questions to those answers. As LOST fanatics, I don't think we will ever be satisfied.
Finally, an honest and revealing return to good, old-fashioned story telling from those who haven't forgotten the core values that drew many of us to Lost from the beginning.
We have human beings, an enchanted Island [of sorts], we have loose ends being tied together, and we have honest-to-goodness reveals, a much-earned dividend rewarding us for hanging in there.
Casting kudos for Allison Janney; and whoever selected the two boys for their respective roles deserves a special award. This holds true especially for the discoverer of boy in black.
This episode also reminds us of the crucial role of the Island in her own drama. Creatively, the laws of entropy seem to have been observed, with the satisfying outcome being that, at least for this hour, we are rid of quantum nonsense and the de-Gaussing of human existence for replacement by second chance do-overs.
Magic, mysticism, mythology and ancient history got us this far .... just hope it gets us home.
Great, great post, nannwynfan! I agree completely. Loved it, it had the right blend of reveal and mystery; if they'd tried explaining stuff like who AJ was, where she was from etc, it would've diminished it for me. It's an endless cycle, people get trapped, become immortal protectors, need candidates to take their place...
Before, it used to be chance: wait for someone to happen upon the island. Later, Jacob built his LH, and decided who to lure/ manipulate.
I really enjoyed MP and TW, especially the latter. The brothers truly loved each other, once.
Great episode, set up the climax so well by hearkening back right to the beginning!
All I have to say to those who are disappointed is this. You all are looking for that first domino. The first mover. The last layer of the onion. And, I think that you all are in the same boat as the MAN IN BLACK. Who wanted to KNOW ALL THE SECRETS and MYSTERY behind the island. You all will be as disappointed as he is. This was an episode about FAITH. JACOB had it. The MAN IN BLACK did not. This episode built on the faith I already had in the show. For others, their faith was weakened.
