When we last saw Richard he was on his way to the temple when he bumped into Sawyer. Sawyer then went to the cave with Flocke. Flocke then went to Claire's camp where Jin was. Flocke then sends Claire to the temple.
Are we to believe that during all that time, Richard still hadn't made his way to the temple? Especially since Claire got to the temple earlier in the day and the raid didn't happen til sundown.
So where is Richard?
Not to mention, where's Sawyer at? Was he left inside the cave by Flocke?

I think maybe Richard has gone to the place where ultimately Illana and co. are headed. And Sawyer must be with Jin. Holding him captive, or (hopefully) revealing his "secret plan" to pretend to go along with Flocke in order to stay alive/find the other Losties? I want to beleive that Sawyer has not "gone to the Dark Side", and the fact that Jin was tied up in the fridge in the Flash Sideways might suggest that he hasn't aligned with the Dark Side either?
Considering Illana and Co. took the secret passageway that Jack and Hurley took last week, my assumption is that they might be headed to the lighthouse. I can't see why Richard would be heading there if he was so intent on getting to the temple as evidenced by his meeting with Sawyer.

I was wondering this myself, unless there is additional secret passage Sawyer would be trapped since one of the ladders broke. His only way out would be to catch a ride with smokey, but I have a hard time picturing Sawyer riding on the back of the smoke stream like it was Falkor from Neverending Story..
Another good question left unanswered so far. If Richard was truly on his way to the Temple when he saw Sawyer in the jungle, then he obviously didn't make it in time. I can only guess that he must have thought better about it, and detoured to the Lighthouse. Or maybe we'll see him show up at the Temple next week, too late to do anything except stare in utter amazement and disbelief at the carnage ole Smokey hath wrought!

Kidding aside I think he was probably trying to avoid be recaptured and took a round bout route. Which considering what happened was a good thing.
