I'm trying to follow the trail.. the connections of people..
Widmore hired Naomi, Frank, Miles, Charlotte and Daniel to go to the Island on the Freighter.
Charlotte worked with Pierre (Candle.. Mile's dad) at the museum.
Candle was a scientist boss of Dharma.
Ben kills the Dharma group.
Ben and Widmore hate each other.
Was Widmore the big boss of the Dharma Initiative?
Re: Is Widmore the big boss of the Dharma Initiative?
This has been a long running suspicion of mine. I have long believed that Widmore was directly connected with Dharma. Maybe he was a Dharma plant inside the Others group. Widmore was either conned into working for Dharma when he was off the island those many times Ben mentioned in his exile speech to Widmore or he was a government/Dharma plant from the first day he showed up.
Look at the evidence. There are two main faction leaders on the island. Jacob and MiB have been the two main leaders for many years. Then along comes the Dharma Initiative to form a third force of reckoning on the island. Illana and company obviously work for Jacob. I believe these are the folks Flocke is wanting scouted on Hydra Island. Now Flocke find's out that Charles Widmore is over there and we find out that all of the remaining Ajira survivors have been killed which effectively eliminated any Jacob stragglers. Since Widmore has a bunch of Dharma technology with him and since Eloise was obviously privy to Dharma's secrets, we can assume Widmore has some connection to Dharma and likely represents them now. This gives us a total of three contenders for island domination. We have Widmore's Dharma group, Illana/Jack's Jacob group and MiB's group.
What their reasons for wanting the island are still up in the air. I have a feeling MiB will honor his deal to take everybody off the island. He just never promised they would be alive when they left. His motives are still real murky. The other two groups motives are even fuzzier. Things are getting curiouser and curiouser.

Oh, I'm glad that I searched for this topic this morning.. didn't realize that people responded. Good insight!
It is starting to make sense why Widmore engaged the scientists as well.. and why he didn't want the original Locke to die (so that MIB wouldn't occupy his body).
Yes, Hanso.. am dying to find out more about that.. and the University research.. did Widmore sponsor that? Actually, I'd really like to find out who Widmore really is.
Re: Is Widmore the big boss of the Dharma Initiative?
If Widmore is involved with Dharma then that relationship didn't start until after he was exiled probably. He was involved in the Purge or at least still one of the Others when the Purge happened. When Ben exiled him from the Island he left using the sub at the Dharma docks, if I'm remembering it right.

Widmore was the leader of the Others at the time of the purge, I think it was he that ordered the purge.
