A big answer for me was Jacob explaining when you come to the Island you are given a clean slate. So I understand its to try and prove a point to MIB that man is not born to sin in their little 'game' but it was nice to hear the connection when I still recall all those hours of reading about Jungs ideas.

Maybe this answers why John and Rose were miraculously cured. Does the clean slate apply to the body as well in terms of those kinds of illnesses.

Yeah. I have been curious why they were miraculously healed. This makes sense. And maybe the decisions you make influence your health, which is why Ben got cancer and Jack got sick.
Ben got it after healing a woman not on the island. Maybe what happens on island should stay there, and his interference with the outside world must be balanced out on island somehow(not a new thought, but in a new context)?
More things come to mind like when Whitfield started killing the captives. The show implies that at the time of the black rock Jacob didnt really know who he brought to the Island just that he sort of opens a door and lets passersby in I guess.
But if they get a "fresh start" or clean slate, then did Whitfields killing of the captives open the door for smokey to start bashing people? Maybe the ships crew all agreed they should be killed and the clean slate was broken. Smokey couldnt touch Richard though.
So id be interested to find out though if it meant taking away all the illnesses as well.

But we know that Smokey doesn't believe in the idea of a clean slate -- if he did, he wouldn't have killed Eko, would he? He was judging him on his actions *before* he came to the island, wasn't he?

Well he doesnt believe man is uncorruptable, that its our nature to sin. Eko killed the others defending himself but he asked Ben for forgiveness, whether or not that absolves him I dont think so but...
He did face smokey and smokey scanned him analysing his past, but with what transpired Id almost say it was more likely that he found a better vessel and changed his mind about using Locke. That was until Eko didnt ask for forgiveness.
I dont think smokey was Judging people just going about his normal business of proving his own point while seeking out his loophole. Although the candidate thing is obviously something a little different.
