People are talking about purgatory, but I'm not convinced that is where our main characters were. I took the speech by Christain to mean the old belief that Time itself does not exist in the afterworld. Jack died but saw everyone because of this.
But I'm seeing enough of this dead from the beginning talk, to wonder if I am seeing it wrong.
Need to watch the Kimmel Ep. and see if they shine any light on things.
No, they did not die in the original crash. Everything we saw for 6 seasons really happened. People died when we saw them die, or later, and they all eventually met up in the Alt.
It wasn't a flash forward of jacks delusional thoughts, it was a joint purgatory, as Christian said, you all created this place, not just Jack, all of them.
I thought the "Alt-Universe" was about them helping each other to "move on" after they died (no matter when it was). It doesn't matter when they individually died (whether on the island or 50 years later), none of those who ended up in the church were ready to move on until they all helped each other. But it wasn't really purgatory, but a place they made for themselves to reconnect. (I know I am not explaining myself clearly).
You explained it just fine, Ells. Everything that happened on the island really happened. Everyone eventually died. Hurley and Ben's exchange about having been an excellent #1 and #2 indicate that they remained in charge of the island for who knows how long. But once each one's life ended, whenever that was, they needed to connect with each other in order to be ready to move on.
If there are still questions, read the When Did They Die? thread. The consensus is definitely that they didn't die in the original plane crash.
Yeah. I was sort of envisioning a timeline where they all died at various time - and everyone became ready to move on at different times. So, even though Sayid died before Hurley, he came to the realization, was at peace and ready to move on before Sayid. But he had to help Sayid be ready too.
