It didn't dawn on me until then! His name had dual meaning. He was yes, Jack's dad, a surgeon etc....but he was also the Shepherd. Herding them along to the afterlife.

The Shephard name also fit Jack's role as his flock's shepherd on the island. He shouldered the responsibility of taking care of the group and he'd always go run after the lost sheep (Claire & Charlie, Hurley in S1, Michael and Walt in S2).

How fitting that Christian returned to shepherd them out of the church into the afterlife (with a nod in the stained-glass window to other religions.)
