What did "fate" want?

Hey Jorge!* First, you rock! Your timing is brilliant, and your delivery is spot on, everytime.* Thank you for making Hurley the awesome dude that he is.

Now, for my question. It seemed like "fate", or some force, conspired to get the castaways on that Oceanic flight. But man, did Hurley have to work his butt off to make that flight. Do you think fate was trying to keep Hurley off of that flight, or did fate step in to make sure he made the flight?
