Shannon put a message in the bottle

I was re-watching Exodus Part I and I noticed something important that didn't register the first time I saw it.

Shannon was one of those who put a message in the bottle when Charlie was collecting.

To whom was the message addressed? It had to be Sabrina. I can't really see Shannon sending a message to one of her exes.

And if Shannon wrote to Sabrina, she wrote about Boone's death.

Which is really amazing progress for Shannon, just as she's emerging from her first distraught, homicidal hours after her brother's death. Even if she thought the Raftaways were likely to perish and Sabrina would never receive the message, just writing it all down was a huge step.

Jbdean, Sabrina is Boone's mother, Shannon's stepmother.

LostMyMarbles! Would you believe I was just thinking about this this morning as a possible fanfic idea? I think it moves up on the priority list now.

What do we know about Shannon's family? Brian, the Sydney boyfriend, mentions Mr. Rutherford being dead. I don't recall any mention of Shannon's real mother. For some reason, I always assumed that since she's been cut out of her inheritance by the stepmother (assuming she told Brian the truth in the plan to scam Boone -- and Boone didn't deny it), Shannon's mother must be dead, too. Of course, future episodes could always turn that on its head.

From her scenes with Sayid prior to TG, which are hugely different from the interactions we saw with Shannon and Boone and Shannon and other characters earlier in the season, it leads me to believe Shannon's been growing by leaps and bounds off-screen. Though she shuts down during and after TGG, by the time we get to Exodus, she's reached the emotional peak that allows Walt's kindness to reach her. So obviously Boone's death isn't going to be the end of Shannon's new life. It's quite possible that Walt's encouragement to voice her feelings to Vincent lead to her putting her thoughts down on paper – quite possibly to Sabrina, who is the only living link to Boone.

I wonder why they purposely showed the connection between Walt and Shannon. I think they are connected somehow. Not in the way that they had met before the island, but I think that Shannon understands Walt and vice versa. I mean...she even hugged him. (Which was totally sweet.)

And we must not forget...they are both special.

Sawyer was reading the messages, wonder if he got to Shannon's?

If he has read Shannon's, then I'm sure he'll mention it to her sometime during the second season. Hopefully not in that mean, spiteful sort of way but in a nice way. Sawyer has grown a lot, too. He isn't the same prick he was when the show first started. LOL I love Sawyer. Almost as much as Boone.

He needs to survive first. Being shot, in the middle of the ocean with no raft aren't the best conditions to survive and return to the island and the other survivors... I don't believe he'll die but I guess it'll take awhile to get back to the others. (the other survivors, not THE others...)

Wondered the very same thing about her message. Also, we know that Shannon was 8 years old when her dad married Boone's mom. I wonder if she was 15 when he died tying her daddy issues to the numbers? is that why she is Special?

I don't think she (or Boone) ever mentioned her real mom at all. Rather odd. Maybe she died during childbirth and Shannon feels 'at fault'. or mom walked out on them which would help explain some of her deep seeded relationship issues.

I love Sayid and Shannon but early on thought that she and Sawyer would make quite a cute couple and can you imagine the onslaught of one liners between them LOL. Sayid is probably much better for her. Sawyer and Shannon are too much alike and both have very low self esteems. Sayid believes in her and makes her feel stronger.

Walt and Shannon do seem to connect. The scene when he gave Vincent to Shannon is one of my all time favorites. A dogs loyalty is like nothing any human can give and they are so trustworthy, which will help Shannon. Vincent seems rather 'special' too.

The mysterious Shannon....hmmmmm? Can't wait till they delve into her character more. We're still missing the Shannon pov flashback. Hope they deliver it soon! Such an interesting character and they have only given us a dollop now and then.
