Sawyer's knowledge about boats . . .

Anybody else think it was weird Sawyer knew so much about boats? Last time I checked, Tennessee wasn't on the coast . . . but Florida is. Do you think it had something to do with the Tampa Job?
SAWYER: It wasn't the flare. I said it wasn't the flare. Those people that did this -- at first I thought they were fisherman or pirates or something. Then I got a good look at their boat. You know anything about boats, Mike? A boat like that wasn't built for the open ocean -- water's coming over the side with the first little squall -- maybe got a range of 100 miles. Nope, a boat like that had to have left port from somewhere close -- like the island. French chick said the Others were coming for a kid. I think they came, Mike.

Hey TROSS!! I missed you!!

About the boat...

I think we will see that once James left the "foster-home" environment, he probably made his way around in this country doing a variety of things. But, I think you might be on to something with James/Boats/Florida. Perhaps he lived there a while and became familier with different types of boats. Lots of things are smuggled along the coast in boats. Drugs, guns, money, people...

(love the AVI BTW!!)

Or Alabama. Closer to Tennesee. Also has a boating industry in Mobile.

I missed you too GL! Congrats on finishing the project, and doing a great job.

Ahh! I forgot about all the illicit trade that occurs along the Florida coast. Been a while since Miami Vice. Think we'll get to see Sawyer in a Crockett style get up?? MAYBE that's why they cancelled the second ep as a Sawyer ep . . . "inappropriate content".

Re: Sawyer's knowledge about boats . . .

Sawyer is a con man..he has to acheive diff skills and knowledge to be able to con his targets..I think that he has picked up alot of skills and knowledge during his con man years and it seems like he is quite the quick learner, that takes adaptabilty and intelligence. But it could also have been something to do with his upbringing...to those who think Sawyer's character don't have much more to tell us are so WRONG..there is loads about this guy we do not know!

Re: Sawyer's knowledge about boats . . .

You guys beat me to this: I agree that he learned about boats either a for a past "real" job, or for a con. And of course, my pet personal theory is that Sawyer was a Boy Scout at some point in his childhood, where he learned about both boats and CPR. Yes, I know; the idea of Sawyer being a Cub Scout is laughable, but until anyone can prove he wasn't a Scout, I'm sticking to my theory.

And, let's not forget: the man loves to read! A love of reading like he has usually starts in childhood (not that I'm an expert, just personal observations), and most likely came out of wanting to escape from his surroundings. There is nothing that says he didn't pick up a book on boats at some point in the past. Plus, he's a sharp guy, and I would imagine that once he becomes interested in something (be it for personal reasons, or for a con), he'd work hard at finding out all he could about the subject.

Re: Sawyer's knowledge about boats . . .

I think Sawyer is definitately smarter than most people think he is...and who knows what he picked up in his con-man travels...but the knowledge he has is not terribly unusual. When my mom first saw the boat, seriously the first think she said, was that boat is too small it's not a sea going boat, it's only meant for short trips therefore it must be from the island, because a boat like that couldn't survive out at sea but only close to land. And my mom comes from the middle of Canada no where near water...so it could just be common sense.

Re: Sawyer's knowledge about boats . . .

Sawyer made his living seducing rich men's wives, then conning the rich men.

What do most rich men have in common?

Boats.

It's a genetic thing. The human male has several genes which activate according to their financial status.

The *ooooo! I can afford a big boat now!* gene is located right between the *gotta get me a cherry red sports car!* gene and the *time for a trophy wife and a hot secretary* gene.

Few better ways to con a man than to be able to talk to him about his toys.
