White Rabbit - Jack's Walkabout?

This is my first time posting here, just picked up the show on reruns and I love it. Reminds me a lot of Carnivale in a way, which is what lead me to find a good ol' Internet message board...

Anyway, I'm not sure if this had been mentioned yet but while I was watching this episode I couldn't help but notice the parallels between Jack's spiritual odyssey into the jungle to find his dad and a walkabout (which was the focus of the previous episode with Locke).

Not really sure of the significance, but I think it goes back to Locke as a 'mentor' figure (or manipulator, depending on your point of view). Even though he was unable to go on his own Walkabout, he was able to help Jack on his. And at the end Jack, like Locke, was able to make peace with his past and move on to the matters at hand (survival and leadership on the island).

Any else pick up on this?

Re: Walkabouts -

Not Jack's, but Locke's.

In that Locke got his Walkabout after all. I'm sure someone has said this, but in reviewing other posts I didn't see.

Right, Locke got his with the boar hunt and whatnot.

But whether he knew it or not, Jack was also participating in a walkabout or some kind of 'vision walk' that was brought on by his pent up feelings coming from his fathers death, his lack of sleep, food, water and his wandering into the jungle for a prolonged period of time chasing after his personal "White Rabbit"

Welcome Enos!

I do see your walkabout connections, and Jack's run/walk through the jungle was kind of a spiritual journey. But, remember the title, "White Rabbit". I think the intent was to conjur images of Alice (Jack) chasing her white rabbit (his father) with Alice (Jack) eventually falling down the hole (Jack falls over the cliff). As Templeton said in another thread, Jack had Locke but Alice just kept falling!

Re: White Rabbit - Jack's Walkabout?

i was jut gonna start a whole new thread, but this is appropiate enough i think to put here and revive this one.

i noticed all the things mentioned, too, but also in a non-symbolic, more tangible kind of connection.
every time Christian shows, Locke is not too far from showing up right after that.*
my first thought was that Locke has something to do with the appearance of Christian's image.

In both Jack's (WR) and Locke's (DEM) FB, their father is in a scene with the sound of the ice clinking in the glass.* The one full of alcohol.

QUOTES FROM WALKABOUT
Locke to GL-12
Patience, the quality which you lack, GL-12, is the hallmark of a leader. (patience = leader)
Rose to Jack
You have a nice way about you. A good soul, patient, caring. (patience = leader)

I hate to correct you Naughty, but Locke is not always too far from showing up. The first time Jack "sees" his father is when he talks to Rose (his father by the tree), and Lock is nowhere near....

The scene you talk about is the one when he talks to Kate, then looks for his dad, only to find Locke coming with the boar.
The scene I am talking about is from Walkabout when Jack is talking to Rose on the beach:
Rose
Doctor, my husband is not dead.
Jack
Rose, he was in the tail section of the plane. It broke off in mid-flight. I'm sorry, but everyone who was in the rear of the plane's gone.
Rose
They're probably thinking the same thing about us.
[Jack does a double-take. Sees a man in a suit and white shoes standing under a tree on the beach. He walks toward it.]
Rose
Doctor? You coming?
[He looks back and the man is gone.
Locke is nowhere near...

Re: White Rabbit - Jack's Walkabout?

ah yes, you are right but 2 things:

1. he also does not chase it, or attempt to see what it is that time, nor the time when Christian stood in the water. Jack dismissed it those times to lack of sleep, etc.
2. After seeing the image a 3rd time, he belives maybe he's not dreaming. Christians image appears immediately after Kate tells Jack Locke was killed by the monster. This time Jack chases it. Boom, there's Locke.

i can't think of any other times Christian's image popped up when Locke wasn't around. I accept the challenge

During the last time Jack "sees" his father (sound of ice cubes shaking), and Jack finding the waterfall, caves, dolls in the water, coffin, We simply don't know if Locke was around (it is possible that he stayed around watching Jack)
