Mirrors and Guns in the Hatch

I was just reading a thread on the Everybody Hates Hugo boards about the geothermic power source and magnetism when someone mentioned the mirrors that Desmond used to see who was coming into the hatch. That got me thinking, why are those mirrors there?

On the thread in EHH, it suggested the mirrors are there to monitor equipment that is not shielded from the strong magnetic field. That could be a possibility.

I personally thought the mirrors looked to be mirrors for spying or to see over or around things, like a periscope on a sub. They were obviously used to see what is going on in the hatch Locke discovered. Why would they need those mirrors to look up the hatch?

I suppose it could be there to act like a door peep hole, to see who is coming. But why on that part of the hatch? The main door to the hatch doesn't seem to have a peep hole in it (of course, there could be and we haven't seen it yet).

Then, it makes me wonder why the ladder was broken/cut off. Is this all related to the 'incident'?

And why all the guns in the hatch? If this is supposed to be a lab to study the magnetic field in the area, why the aresenal?

I dunno, spying mirrors, lots of guns, Desmond acting all paranoid and untrusting of anyone, makes me wonder what the heck is really up with all that.

Re: Mirrors and Guns in the Hatch

The mirror at the bottom of the hatch looked alot like a mirror that hangs on a wall in a person's house. It didn't look as if it were actually a part of the "spy glass" system. Definitely weird

That is really weird. Another mystery of Lost.
