Inconsistencies in the Others behavior

In this episode, with Cindy's abduction, we saw the Others in action and confirmed that the Others are the ones whispering and they can snatch their victims unheard and unseen. (Additionally, I think it is safe to say that Ethan and the Seabillies were not in collaboration with the Others since their modus operandi is different but that is fodder for another thread.)

Why have our Lostaways been spared to date? Locke, Boone, Danielle, Sayid and others have all explored the island (in many cases alone) and have been spared. Many of our Lostaways have heard the whispers and nothing has happened. In fact, the Others were whispering around Sawyer in "Outlaws": "They could help us". Does not sound too threatening to me. Yet the Tailies have seen a completely different side to the Others.

Additionally, Sawyer is critically injured, and yet the Others went after Cindy who was not as easy of prey. Why was Sawyer not picked off first?

I wonder whether the Others think the Lostaways from the main cabin can help them in some way. I think this episode lends credence to Dalbrect's theory that the Lostaways may have been planted on the island to fix things.

Just rambling here, but wondering about the Others' inconsistent behavior and who they choose to attack.

Not sure it's inconsistent. More likely we don't know their motivations, methods or intentions. Also, I am not sure as to how many groups there are, as they would all fit the category of "other" but not "Others", if you take my meaning...

Re: Inconsistencies in the Others behavior

It seems to me that we may be looking at "good" others and "bad" others. Walt for instance is using whatever power he has to help. Had Shannon actually listened to what he was telling her to be quiet, she would not have been shot. I am guessing the whispers from last season may well have been-

Spoiler:
the kids from the tail section - after being taken and incorporated into whatever program the Degroots are putting the kids through to do this to them - which is what they have done to Walt as well

That's the theory I am currently sticking with!

Why would they need a person that looks like he'll die any minute? If they can capture easily and they're looking for help, they would definitely go for a healthy quite person.

Re: Inconsistencies in the Others behavior

Has Michael even asked about the Others from the boat? He could've asked if any of the Others they've encountered looked like the ones from the boat. That might help figure out how many Others or different groups of people there were on the island.

Re: Inconsistencies in the Others behavior

There are different thoughts on who the "others" are and how many groups of "others there are. And when was the last time we actually saw Cindy? She could've fallen behind before then, and no one noticed.

Re: Inconsistencies in the Others behavior

I rewatched it before and you see her handing a bag or whatever to Libby and then the next shot, she's gone.

I shouldn't say the next shot but, when it shows them at the top of the hill, she's not there.
