I've been reading everyone's ideas about whether Ana shot or didn't shoot Shannon so I'll add my two cents too. If you watch the clip the gun shot is heard at 2:37 and you see Ana lowering her gun at 3:10.
That is 33 seconds. It doesn't sound like a lot of time but try holding your arms in "shoot the gun" postion for 33 seconds and it's longer than you would think.
I think Ana was in "ready to shoot" position when someone else shot Shannon (no guesses from me who it was) and continued to stay in that position because she also doesn't know where the shot came from and whether there will be more. I also think that the astonished looks on Jin's and Michael's faces are for the same reason. They KNOW Ana didn't shoot but here is Shannon shot and they don't know who did it either.
Didn't someone say that Shannon's killer would be revealed in a later episode? If that's the case, it can't be Ana, since it would already be "revealed".
Yeah, I read that in other posts after I posted mine. I think the other posters idea that Ana shot whoever attacked/shot Shannon is a good one. I'm beginning to lean toward the Danielle theory. You?
I think the scene is a misleading edit of two unrelated events. Shannon is shot by Frenchie near Sayid. That is the gunshot we hear. The shots of AL holding her gun are shots from another scene happening simultaneously in another part of the island. She has just shot Cindy by accident, ergo the shocked looks on everyone's faces.
Remember the first episode this season? We see Kate get nabbed, and Locke's reaction. Then Jack gets there and goes down into the hatch. There he is confronted by Des and Locke. We assume something nefarious in Desmond's metting with Jack in the stadium. The next epi reveals what happened between Kate's nabbing and Jack's arrival. We also learn that Des doesn't even remember Jack, and hasn't left the Hatch in three years. So much for his mastermind-recruiter role.
This show excels at seting us up to believe one thing and then revealing something else. Remember Locke's wheelchair, and Jin's bloody shirt?
Not everything is what it seems in the Jungle of Mystery.

Just speculation, but what if it was Kate trying to shoot Anna, but Shannon got in the middle. Similiar to the first three episodes this season, we will see all of the gaps filled in in a future episode.
Then I am not convinced this person is holding a gun. The screencap is difficult to measure by, but when I watch it on my DVR copy it clearly does not look like a gun in that left hand.
Also, not that clear from the screencap, in that scene I can see the edges of what I think is AL's weapon-ish thing (with rope covered handle) that she carries on her left side all episode. I had to watch it a couple of times, but the edges are visible. That person is AL. That doesn't mean she shot Shannon necessarily...it just means it is her standing there.

It's not a gun. If you watch that shot in motion, the "gun" sways in the wind. It's a piece of cloth or something.

I agree with this. That is exactly what I thought at the end of the episode; Sayid is looking at Shannon's shooter and the Tailaway's are looking at whoever Ana shot, but these are not from the same scene.
