apologies if this has been discussed. i searched and found nothing.
it's been a few months since i watched season one. when jack finds his dad's coffin. the dad's body is not in it, right? wouldn't it follow that the Others have it?
I read somewhere that the body wasn't inside, and it was just the casket that was on board the plane. although it makes no sense why his body would be sent out seperately, unless they dont allow the deceased onboard a plane due to baggage rules? But this brings up the point, we know he found the coffin and smashed it to peices proving he wasn't inside, but where is it now? Iif his fathers body was inside the casket, i highly doubt that it fell out during the crash, landed near the others (which ever group of others we mean) and the casket then closed itself and landed back near the fuselage crash site.

The casket was opened..the lid was just shut. I don't think Jack had to work real hard to open it...the body may have fallen out somewhere else. I don't know what good a dead body is..unless...Dharma is going to bring it back to life in some way...now that would be SCARY!
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
I was under the impression that the body was never in the coffin. In the scene at the airport where Jack is ranting about how he has to get the body home for the funeral and the lady says the body cannot be shipped without something... don't remember what exactly she said but she gives a reason why the body couldn't be shipped at that time. Seems like it was close to the time they were to depart and it's not like the "check in" lady is going to break some major rules just to satisfy Jack. Just my thoughts anyway. (Darn, another ep I'll have to go back and watch again! lol). Anyway, I just figured he got on the plane without dear ol dad and would just have to deal with the family when he got back to LA.

If the coffin was put on the plane without Jack's Dad's body in it, I don't think that Jack knew about it. His reaction to the empty coffin leads me to believe that he thought he would see a body when he opened it. I just watched that episode this past weekend.
I've just watched the episode tonight, and I feel that Jack knew his father's body wouldn't be in the coffin. His frustrations and fears were taken out on the coffin, perhaps because he still blames his father. After that small moment of catharsis he can return to the survivors and be able to accept the leadership role they have handed him.

but do you think that he knew the airline didn't put it in the coffin or that he thought the body had fallen out?
In all the research I've done, I never saw anything about why Jack's dad's body was never in the casket and nothing was ever mentioned, as far as I know, on the show.
Tha said, I would imagine that will be addressed this season or in subsequent seasons.
Spoiler:
The episode entitled The Hunting Party is supposed to Jack-centric and feather John Terry who played Jack's dad, maybe it will be answered then.
We'll have to see what happens....maybe someone should start an unanswered questions thread...if someone hasn't already.
