I am not sure this has been discussed again, but what do people think the significance of the numbers on the outside of the hatch have in correlation to the pushing of the button. When the hatch was created, what was the purpose of having the numbers on the outside as well?
I would not call it a pseudo serial number rather I would prefer calling it a project number. As Bailey's dad said, it is a way to tie things together. Supplies destined for this specific bunker would thus bear the number and that would include hatch covers to be installed when they arrived at the island.

Yeah,
but not just THAT bunker I'm sure.
Sure it coorelates with them all.
6 numbers, 6 stations...
Hmmmmmm...
Is the Swan number 15 or 16, etc
and the others have a predestined number for their own bunker?
i dunno.
i have been wondering that for awhile, i was thinking its actually a code of some sort.
also dont forget the numbers were being broadcast from the radio tower on the island till the french chick changed it
I've wondered why Jack didn't go and look at the numbers on the outside after Hurley told him about hearing them from Lenny. He was told about them before they found Desmond and the computer.
Hurley is the only one who knows the numbers on the outside are the same ones being entered into the computer, but he also has a special connection to them. Jack has been given all of the pieces of the puzzle to figure it out, yet he hasn't.
I wonder if it would change their approach to the current situation? I'm glad that Michael is doing some investigation though. Maybe he'll come across them at some point.

I woiuld lean towards project number. The numbers were also on the bottles of stuff Desmond was injecting into himself. Now the additional question is how the radio tower would be tied in and why it was broadcasting the numbers too.
i had read a theory that the broadcast was like a secret spy code that was used during the cold war. and that only one person would be able to decode it, the person it was intended for. theres alot more to it than that but i dont remember it now.

Possible reasons to broad cast a project number. Broadcast the call project # when they need to contact headquarters for emergency reasons such as an incident? Broadcast the project number when you are in need of supplies? An auto repeat number so headquarters will know the station is functioniong to specification? Perhaps typing the number into the computer sends it to the transmitter so headquarters will know power system is operating and/or station is occupied?
I don't remember what Danielle said about interfering with the signal. Would it be possible that her interference is why the supplies & crew replacements stopped coming?
