I'm Just Not That Into YouA place to talk about the things you don't like about the character. If you like the character you might want to avoid this section.
I very badly wanted to disregard the fuselage rules and use a different word in place of 'wimp' in this thread title, can you guess which one it would have been?
Anyway- in my opinion, I think Locke has pretty much completely lost his edge and intrigue this season. He has easily done just as much crying as Claire on the island at this point, and I loved the character too damn much when he was the tough mystery man back in season one. Now it's like, instead of throwing knives, he's throwing tantrums. He's Pretty much just bowing down to Jack with this 'what should i do now boss?' attitude, and I for one am not understanding why the writers chose to take him in this direction.
The next time he clenches his fists in the air and looks up with tears in his eyes and whines ''what am i supposed to dooooooo?'', I seriously think even the two week old baby is going to tell him to quit being... a baby.
Oh and on top of that, I can't comprehend why the writers let Eko steal O'quinns thunder.
I don't think he's gotten any weaker since the first season. I think all of the main characters have some obstacle or problem to overcome, including Locke. His 'tantrums show his battle with his problems. And Terry's thunder hasn't been stolen.
And I think he is showing his strength by knowing when to give the orders, and when to take them. I like that they're not making him a flat character who's only mysterious and forceful. They're showing that he's vulnerable and not immune to being influenced by something outside himself (the island).
I think it's extremely interesting that the Mighty Hunter/Shaman has morphed back into an office drone--drawing up duty lists, sitting at the computer in a windowless office doing a crossword puzzle, etc., rather than being out hunting and giving his acolyte acid trips. And he seems HAPPY.
I'm not complaining--it's just one more fascinating thing about the character.
I don't believe Locke has become a wimp at all. He is sitting back and taking in everything new to discover in the hatch and getting to know Eko, his thoughts and suggestions....
In short, my thoughts are that the writers DID indeed orginally intend for the Locke character to be the mystery man that would eventually succumb to the dark side of the island's forces, but the viewer favoritism and demand/popularity of the character made them veer away from that path, as we have been seeing so far this season. This is actually a side note in my master theory, which I am developing with both consideration as to past plotting as well as the production/practicality aspects of the show. work in progress.
