The Black Smoke In The Pilot?

Perhaps this has been addressed already: In the pilot, a lot of folks out here in internet-land are convinced that the engine explosion is caused by an attack of the black smoke monster. Freeze frames and close ups show a blurry object heading towards the intake on the engine just before it explodes. Personally, I believe it was the hapless "survivor" that got sucked into the engine that caused the explosion. Any chance you can settle this one for good?

the explosion of the engine was caused by a guy getting sucked up into the works, not the smoke monster. whatever it is that people see on the freeze frame - it is NOT the black smoke monster.
