When Weirdy McBeardy dragged Kate out, my first thought was...she is in on it.
It was just like the bank robbery. She appears to be a pretty, delicate victim....a hostage. Once they rough her up the bank manager caves and opens the vault. Kate snuggled up to the guy who helped rob the bank to gain what she wanted. She totally used him. How do we know that Kate wasn't sent as the spy, to develop a relationship with the guys (sawyer and Jack) and be bait again?
Remember when Kate and Tom were in the car with the police after her? Part of their conversation went something like..
Tom: Give yourself up, they go easy on you if you do.
Kate: I can't.
Tom: You can have a normal life.
soooo...in what way does he think Kate will have a normal life if she gives herself up for murder? At best, she spends years in prison and that is not "normal life".
I am starting to wonder if Tom and Kate didn't start out in the Project. We know they like kids to mold. If they were kids together and made that tape, we don't know where they were when kate says "when i grow up, i am getting out of here". We just know she wants OUT. What if that toy plane and Tom are so important because they are symbolic of her freedom from the Project? What if Tom is still working for Hanso, Kate has been hiding and that is why Tom says, "You shouldn't have come back here" and the "you can have a normal life" (if you just cooperate.) ?????
If Kate was part of the original DeGroots program when she was young...
she would have gotten training in tracking, the gun skills...They then sent her out into the world, wiping her memory of certain things (tabula rasa) first.
But, it didn't work so great and she did remember..and she was mad...and after she killed Wayne, her mother realized that Kate KNEW what they had done.
That would explain why Kates mother was so terrified when she saw Kate at the hospital. Kate's mom knew what Katie had been raised to be..to do. She thought Katie had come to end that part of the cycle.
She is the only one who did not pass out during the plane crash. She certainly looked scared but...she also looked really scared when she played victim at the bank. And, even if you were told in advance you would survive a crash it would still be scary as hell.
Remember when Kate drugged Jack so he could sleep? When he woke up, his key to the case with the guns was gone. Next, we see Shannon using the key to open the hidden case. We are led to believe that Kate was by Jack's side the whole time but she obviously left. How did Sahannon know what that key was for and how did she know where the case was or what was in it? Unless Kate told her.
Going back to that kiss when Kate looked at Jack so strangely afterwards. Makes me wonder if she didn't look that way because she knew she was gonna backstab him.
And there was the part where Jack asked about "other spies" and Beardy was sort of concerned looking....like maybe Jack knew about Kate and now his little plan wouldn't work. Beardy looked relieved when Jack said "Ethan" and not "Kate.
I'm starting to think Kate is a double agent...hindering the Losties for her ultimate goal of bringing down the whole mess...even if there is collateral damage. The greater good.
---------------
I will edit this periodically to add additional "evidence".

I gotta go back & check it out. I'm leaning towards no... but I could be convinced. I think her feelings or Jack and/or Sawyer are genuine... but if you think about it... "a house divided against itself cannot stand"... so if Kate puts a wedge between the strongest guys... well then they ain't gotta be catchin' no seabillies now are they?
That does tie well with her backstory, but I'm gonna disagree, I dont think she is working with the others.
You better listen my my sister's and brothers,
'cause if you do you can hear, There are voices still callin' from across the years. And they're cryin' across the ocean, And they're cryin' across the land, And they will until we all come to understand
That none of us are free, None of us are free
None of us are free, if one of us is chained, None of us are free

I agree with these points, completely. If she wanted to catch up and join the gang, why did she just tell Hurley? Why not grab Sayid when you are on the beach? His absence seemed really glaring.
Also, Beady, Zeik, whatever you want to call him didn't seem to register "Ethan" as you mention. I wonder if Ethan and Goodwin were working with some other group on the island.
I have often doubted Kate and her story. She appears out of the jungle and walks up on Jack AFTER Jack goes off to stitch himselfup.
She seems to be right there whenever there is a "situation". She rebuked Jack and went to help Locke with the hatch, Insisted on going to the BlackRock,...
Now I understand that she is a main charactor, that given, I would not be the least bit surprised if Kate is the ultimate Con and has fooled our Losties...In my Humble Opinion
There have been other posts before this epi that suggest that a lot of people out there think Kate is not a "regular" Lostie. It seemed that TPTB want us, the viewers, to think that Kate MIGHT be "in on it"...it certainly looks like it from some angles...she definitely did a good con job at the bank...also...when her step dad (military man) mentioned that she had murder in her heart, does this imply that Kate killed someone before she killed Wayne?
I agree completely, Kitty. Besides Kate, there is also the scene in 48 Days, (I think) where Ana has Eko hit her before throwing her into the pit with the rafties. They are showing us that we shouldn't believe our eyes when it comes to these women being powerless victims.
I've always wondered why Kate is always so eager to go on expeditions on the island. If you go back and watch her scenes from the first season with the perspective that she may be on the side of the Others, you'll get some interesting results.
